Subject: BS: chemotherapy
From: Keith A of Hertford
Date: 18 Dec 15 - 01:12 AM

I start on Monday having been turned down for surgery.
Not looking good.
Anyone out there had any personal experience of chemo? I have been told it is less debilitating than it used to be. Hope so.

I am getting a briefing about it at the hospital today.
Will report back later.

The real me to the real you.

Good luck. Listen carefully and remember to take in the positive as well as the negative aspects of what they say. Chemotherapy is a group term and no two situations are the same, being a combination of your body and the help these drugs give it in suppressing or deleting the problem. Oncology has come on in leaps and bounds over the years and as someone involved at periphery of care, I see the increasing quality of life these interventions can give.

It's the result not the process you need to focus on. But vastly more importantly, listen to the experts, not the irratic world of blokes on the Internet. That said, you'd be surprised how many on here have been there.

Absolutely agree with everything that Musket has said.

But also,Be Positive.

The way that you approach this can make so much difference both to the process and the outcome. Go into it confidently, knowing that it's just something that you've got to do and then you can move on. And as Musket says, listen to the professionals.

a local friend is going through it. He reported tiredness for a day or two after each episode. But he was in the Farmers' Market with his dogs & wife supping tea 4 days later so I would suggest - get in the DVDs and a good book.

Laughter is the best companion to chemo, if not precisely the best medicine, and friends who have found watching old episodes of the funniest programs they can find to be helpful. I'm not sure what those might be on your side of the pond, but I'm sure a list will form if you ask. The flip side of that is to spend less time fighting on mudcat. Stick with the music threads, they'll always do you right!

Wishing you a great outcome, Keith.

Thanks for the good will everyone.
It means a lot to me.

My talk was encouraging too, but I was warned it can effect some folk worse than others.

There were a few people in the suite receiving treatment, and they seemed comfortable and relaxed. Some quite jolly!

My wife Mary has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, but we do not know what her treatment will be yet.

Thanks again. So grateful for the good wishes.
I will tell you how I get on.

Keith, it's different for everyone and yet in many ways the same. You will both find your best support from people who've been through it, and this often starts with one's fellow chemo-appointment folks.

Don't forget to take some music on earbuds with you, and to be kind to yourself. And laughter-- it may come in odd places and will always do you a world of good.

Thanks for telling us about it. And telling and telling, in the days ahead.

It's a marathon, not a sprint... take time to look about, on this journey.

All the best,

~Susan

Eat well to keep your weight up and do some pot if you suffer from nausea and need to stimulate your appetite.

I am deeply touched by everyone's kindness, and shared experiences.
Thanks everyone.

As yet I have no pain, or any symptoms except I can't eat so much.
I think pancreatic cancer is often like that.
I still would not know I had it but it blocked my bile duct turning me yellow!

A clever man with an endoscope and a stent fixed that for me, but the cancer was already too far gone for surgery, unless the chemo shrinks it.

My onc. reckons a one in four chance.
keith.

Reality puts dancing on the head of an angel (or whatever the analogy is) into perspective.

In the real world, we have many things to consider and take stock about.

I genuinely look forward to completely disagreeing with you in the strongest terms you or I can articulate on a keyboard on the many issues of life that frankly don't affect either of us at all.

Your journey back to where you started is about the real world and in that, I am thinking about you. Not praying because I don't don't that. Not muttering platitudes because I don't do that. But can't wait till your energy is back to a level where we can both enjoy the cathartic joy of winding each other up. You enjoy it as much as I do. A close relative is perhaps a couple of months further into their treatment than you for the same problem. DVD box sets seem to keep her from being bored. Bubble gum entertainment is not so bad when you feel knackered till you get used to the treatment.

I am sat in a hotel lobby right now because I don't enjoy the disco. I am at a Chrimbo dinner for a cancer charity Mrs Musket and do voluntary work for. The people around me right now have been where you are and are enjoying themselves. Yeah, listen to the experts as I said earlier but you and your good wife should also listen to yourselves and don't let the bastard grind you down. Mrs Musket cures and contains your wife's issue for a living and the success stories give her the impetus to enjoy her work.

Ian.

Keith

We're going through some of the same at present. Elizabeth goes into hospital in Ipswich on Christmas Eve for a hysterectomy necessitated by a tumour. We're still coming to terms with it as it has only been a few weeks since the symptoms first arose.

At our age I suppose that we should expect such problems, but the eternal teenager within still expects immortality.

We wish both you and Mary all the very best.

Alan

Hi Keith

I have had Chemo - about 20 years ago.

There is some good advice here especially by Musket.

listen to the medical advice and think of the goal ahead.

In my experience the oncologists were fantastic as were all the other medics that were involved.

I found the treatment debilitating at first but my body ( or was it my brain?)soon began to adapt and I lived with it with the help of my wife and family.
As you said Chemo treatment has improved since I had it and so has the total approach to the disease.

I also had to have Radio Therapy and again this has improved over the years.

I was treated at The Christie in Manchester ( Then called Christies).
Hospital). I was given all the help, assistance and advice from the staff that helped me enormously. I was given a telephone number and told if I had any problems to call it. I did have one panic attack in the middle of the night and the then Head of Oncology came out to see me and assured me that the problem I was having was part of the treatment and quite normal.

Best Wishes

Mike

I have a set of my village photos as postcards for sale in a local shop - all profits from the sale of which go to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

You would find it difficult to buy the postcards without walking up my village street, but the link to the PCRF is here if anyone feels moved to contribute.

And, if you're curious, the postcards.

Keith, there are so many well-wishes to you and I'd like to add mine in a meandering way.

1) Cancer sucks, and there ain't no doubt about it.

2) Attitude and determination: Know you have a fight ahead of you and decide now that the winner's gonna be you.

3) "Like, stay positive, Dude." I knew someone who talked like that. I think he was from California and really liked the 1960s.

4) Keep your sense of humour. It will be one of your best friends in the times ahead for both your missus and you.

Draw on your reserves of strength, your reserves of philosophy. You have much of each, Keith, and lots of folks behind you.

A friend who helped his wife beat a "death sentence" of a cancer some years ago, recently sent me the following for a friend whose husband was refusing her the use of cannibis:

http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/hp/cannabis-pdq
This info/source is as conventional as it gets, with reticence in terms of hemp/cannabis as having cancer curing qualities/potential, but still opening the door politely....
Second: introduce hubby to the fact that conventional cancer treatment in North America is dollar driven, and cheap cures are anathema; or, in more simple language, cures = loss of medical/pharmaceutical income. Just a fact.
Third: Encourage hubby to educate himself: Go on internet and type in "cannabis and cancer" etc.
For example:   http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/279571.php (headline:
Cannabis reduces tumor growth in study)

My friend's wife is alive and healthy and working as a nurse.

I have just come out of hospital where I was isolated and on IV antibiotics after my last dose of chemo.

After some initial shrinking the chemo was no longer making much difference and not worth continuing. The last dose knocked out my platelets, white cells, neutrophils, haemoglobin and much else leaving me with no immunity or resistance to bleeding.
A brain bleed or an infection would have done for me, so the decision to stop was inevitable anyway.

We have opted for a course of radiotherapy, but there is only a 10% chance of any success.

As of now, I feel my old self and have no symptoms so we can get on with enjoying our time together.
I should have a good year of quality life, and maybe two or three. The docs. can't say how long because it is so variable, but some people do go on for years.

I will have the tube in my arm taken out as soon as the bleeding risk allows, and have a stent changed. The R therapy lasts five and a half weeks, then I am free to enjoy everything life has to offer.

Thanks for all the good will and kind thoughts.
keith.

Whatever about the effect of cannabis on tumours, I heard a BBC World radio programme the other day in which an American woman was interviewed. Her friend had rung her up some years ago and asked her could he borrow one of her husband's guns. "Why do you want that?" she asked, and he said it was to take his own life. The sickness from chemotherapy was too dreadful, and he reckoned he was just waiting to die.
She went over to visit him, bringing not a gun but a joint, and 20 minutes after smoking it, she said, his nausea was gone and he was rarin' to go.
She then went and applied for a licence to run a legal clinic supplying medical cannabis, and has been running it for 10 years or so.
Now, of course she was advertising, and so was going to be bigging up the product she's selling - but it might be worth talking to your doctor, Keith. It may help with radiotherapy's effects too.
Holding you in the light.

Incidentally, if you're worried about lessened alertness and so on, apparently medical cannabis has the THC (the stuff that gets people stoned) removed, so that's not a problem. What works in medical cannabis is other ingredients than the one that causes the stoner-ness.

And thanks for the info. Thompson.
I finish my course of radio/chemo on Wednesday, and it has been much less gruelling than the chemo I had before.

I will not know if it has helped until a scan, but it would be unrealistic to get my hopes up.
It is over a year since my diagnosis so I am already well ahead of the odds for pancreatic cancer.
I will try to get on a trial for one of the new biological treatments if I can.
Thanks again,

Dear Well-wishers.
An amazing thing has happened to me.
Although little hope was given for the last treatment (radio-chemo) a subsequent CT scan revealed "no measurable residual mass" where the tumour had been!

The surgeon will now operate, but there is still something on the artery which despite a PET scan (interesting!) could possibly contain cancer. If it does he will abandon the procedure. (Whipple procedure)

The operation is scheduled for the 24th.
Thank you for your good wishes and prayers. They worked!

Home again!
Here are the grisly details.
It was understood that the op would be abandoned if possibility of cancer in the artery.
He was able to clear the artery but not the vein so it was abandoned.
I was under for 6 hours, 3 of which was working on the vein.
He took many samples from all the nearby tissues and organs, and no cancer was found.
That makes this a good news story, and very unusual.

I will be checked for any regrowth every few months, and I should have a reasonable life expectancy now.
That is a remarkable reversal of what I have been living with the last year and a half.

I am very weak and sore fro the op., but much better than I was.  I should be back to normal (?) in a few weeks or months.
Anyway, I am safely home and being well looked after.

Thanks for all your concern, kind thoughts and prayers.
They worked!
Keith and Mary.

Mind yourself, Keith. By the way, do they do that DNA-targeted treatment for the particular cancer that has its teeth temporarily into you? If they can, it's supposed to mean the chemo is less sickmaking but works really well.

(By the way, do you pronounce it keemo or kemmo? I've always heard keemo, but a friend who spent years in the US says kemmo.)

Keith - disagreement, squabbling, and insults, all part of the robust adversarial rough amd tumble games of mudcat BS...

You will be genuinely missed;
this place needs difficult characters to keep us stimulated,
and stop it getting boring...

Our mudcat personas often clashed hard on subjects that we care too personally about..

sorry if I ever went too far in the heat of battle...

But if the real you and me had met socially,
I'm sure we would have found shared interests and much in common..

Stay as comfortable as you can, and fill your time with favourite music and TV & Radio comedy shows...

cheers...

My dear good friend, your news has devastated me, I Just hope a mistake has been made and you make a recovery.
My heart goes out to Mary at this time as I know exactly how she will be feeling.
I e'mailed Joe this morning to try to make it possible for me to contact you, after reading the message on the other section.
When you first told us about your diagnosis, I said that I never met a stronger or straighter person and if anyone could fight it you were the man......so it proved, in health and on these pages. Brave and strong against sometimes overwhelming odds, but always courteous and well informed.
If the worst does happen Keith, I just want you to know how much I appreciated your kindness and support...on the forum and in personal matters by personal message. I will certainly never forget you.
"The friend you never met"........Alex.

He's up there, if that is true.

And that Cafe is getting more populous all the time.

I'm curious to see an obit for the reality world Keith rather than his 'problematic' mudcat ID persona...

Just to understand a little about who he was, how old he was, what he acheived in life, his musical life...

That real 3D Keith might quite probably have been a bloke I could get on with if we'd ever met socially and performed together...

Well, here's a thing.

Because I get in trouble when I do so,
I will not give Keith A's name here.
All I had to do to find him, though,
was Google his church in Hertford,
from the info given in the post about his funeral.

And if he is who I make him out to be, then
he has -- had -- his own Twitter account, under his own name.

First time I ever laid eyes on a photograph of him.
And good heavens,
he appears to be nothing like old enough to be old,
if you see what I mean.

So I won't "out" Keith: but now, you know what to do ...

Our swords were crossed more often than not on politics but we had a lot in common and agreed about more important things like life, love and folk music!

Condolences to his family and friends and may he rest in the peace he so deserves.

pfr has it exactly right. I disliked Keith's Mudcat persona intensely, and thought his politics stank, but I did occasionally banter with him offline and thought I detected a real 3-D human being in there somewhere. That's the thing, though, innit: we see here the online man 99% and the real-life man 1%. My son lived in Hertford for a time (and the in-laws are still there), and I know the canal and the nice pub with outside tables ideal for a summer night, and, had our stars collided a bit better, Keith and I might have fought our corners over a pint or six, which maybe would have been a far better way of going about things than he and I ever managed here.

All good wishes and kind thoughts from me to his family and friends.

It isn't a problem now. He was Keith Acheson, and many of us knew it because the old Mudcat troll went after Keith quite viciously with fake accounts. It was one of many I tracked down and reported to Facebook back in the rough years around 2011-2013.

Our respective Mudcat 'persona' differed strongly but, like others who crossed swords with Keith on here, I suspect that in the real world we would have probably got along fine, and our mutual love of music and life in general would have overcome our political differences.

"Throw down the sword, the fight is done and over,
Neither lost, neither won..."

RIP Keith, and condolences to his family and friends.

Keith seems to have been a chap with two distinct personas depending on if you only knew him in church & folk club, or in BS...
That's my guess...

... and occasional mudcatters/ GUESTS/ any folks who knew him in real life,
but who seldom or never ventured downstairs into the netherworld below the line,
may not even have been aware of his 'problematic' BS posting history...

I am saddened to read the news that Keith has died. I only learned recently of his illness when I looked in on the cat after many years of absence, maybe I was meant to look in.

We had many a debate on the cat regarding Irish related issues and as many are aware, we held very different views.

I am a committed Irish Republican and ex Republican prisoner who served 16 years in both the cages of Long Kesh (3 years during internment) and 13 years of a life sentence) in the H Blocks.

No one could keep his cool like Keith could and ignore and sidestep the facts and statistics I posted, God he knew how to get to me.

Publicly we were like cat and dog, but through private messaging we were very different and the complete opposite and rarely even discussed politics.

Keith, I will miss you even though it has been some time since we were in touch. To his family, he is a man I respected and remember, no one gets to take away your memories.

Mo chomhbhróin

Keith A of Hertford and Musket crossed swords many times on many matters and many of the Musket posts were by me.

However, the real Ian Mather and Keith Acheson shared many musical interests and we shared many on pm posts. Also, towards the beginning of this thread you will see us agreeing that we enjoyed the arguments too. One of the other Muskets met him at a Folk Club in Hertford and was impressed by his enthusiasm and delivery of songs. You can’t ask for more than that.

I was aware that Keith was in what might be perhaps a final battle but I had not caught the earlier part of this thread so I was unaware how long this had been going on and that he had recently left us. Although we never met I appreciated his posts in various threads, many involving contention although for the most part I seconded what Keith had to write. I will miss him and remember his presence in previous posts.

My condolences to his near and dear ones and I pray they have durable positive memories to carry them through this period and on into the future.

I'd known that Keith was poorly for a long time, though he was never explicit on the forum about it until his last days. There's been a really unfortunate spat about him on another thread that's made me sad, actually. Maybe because his death almost coincided with my dad's. I think it's fine to speak honestly and straightforwardly about differences we had with a member who has passed away, but there's a way of doing it that has evaded one or two people here. I disagreed with Keith on almost all of his takes on things going on in the world and regarded him as wrong-headed most of the time, and disliked his goading strategy, his modus operandi. But, as has been rightly said, he stuck with it and was, I think, genuinely enquiring as to what we thought about things, even if that was only so that he could find specific and often devious ways of knocking us down. Believe it or not, I did communicate with him privately on a few occasions, not many, and our exchanges were friendly and civil, and I was able to wish him well during his illness. I never met him nor heard his singing, though for a time my son lived in Hertford and we got to know the place quite well, though only in short visits (my in-laws are still there, natives of the town as they are). He was quite well known - and loved - for his singing in his local area, something I did bother to find out about in my feeble attempts to discover what made him tick, and I suppose that the people who knew the 3-D Keith saw a different man from the one some of us railed at here.

Not often I agree with Steve Shaw, but for a man on the opposite side of the fence to Keith, I think his comments were fair, balanced and well reasoned.
Coming from a man totally at opposites with Keith, I think he has tried to create a fitting eulogy, and succeeded in my view.

For folks like me who only knew the version of Keith on mudcat
and were mostly opposed to his BS ramblings,
he was still a daily part of my life for a number of years.
Engaging with him occupied a lot of my time and thought.
Like him or not, he was one of 'us', our community;
and a man I tried to figure out, and occasionally defend against sheer hatred from other mudcatters on my 'side'.
He showed what I believe was genuine sympathy regarding my mum's dementia.

To me he was like the contrary old bloke in the corner of the pub
who was difficult to get on with,
but you cared enough to be concerned about his well being
and made sure he got home safe after closing time...

Sadly, he didn't appear frequently enough above the BS line in neutral ground,
so we could at least discuss shared interests.
I've always been curious about his musical life outside of mudcat...

Keith was a retired teacher of maths and physics who lived in Hertford. Before his illness, maybe even after the first diagnosis, he sang shanties in pubs and folk clubs around Hertfordshire. The Belfast Keith is someone completely different, I can't rule out that there is a distant relationship. St Andrews is a large church, but I do know it as my cousin's funeral was there earlier in the year. They respect people's privacy and there is very little private information about anybody on their website. I never met Keith, but there are people posting on this forum who had met him in folk clubs. I can't find an obituary in the Hertfordshire Mercury which would be the most likely place.
