Subject: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final
From: Graham Pirt
Date: 05 Dec 99 - 08:50 AM

Mudcatters Sam Pirt and Ian Stephenson with Joey Oliver and Sophie and Emily Ball in the band "422" last night (Saturday 4 December) won the BBC Young Folk Award. In a concert in Broadcasting House in London they competed against another five performers/bands who had won their way through to the final. The standard was absolutely exceptional and any of the performers could have won. "422" will now appear at Cambridge Folk Festival and take part in an international tour organised by the British Council. Well done all of them.

The concert will be broadcast on The Folk Programme on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday 8 December between 20.00 and 21.00 GMT - Listen in?

Way to go, Mudcatters!

Who will broadcast this show in the US? Can Max get hooked up, and rebroadcast over Mudcat? I see tha BBC news programs are frequently reboradcast around the world - perhaps this show could be done, as well.

You can get BBC Radio 2 in Real Audio of course, but you'd have to make allowance for the time difference.

BBC 2 does broadcast live on-line. They say they don't have their whole program available, but I'm listening right now. I really hope they decide to broadcast the show live. There's a link on the BBC Radio 2 Home Page

It is very nice to know that young muscians that you play with in local sessions have done very well. But lets think about the ones that didn't win the award, who are all I am quite sure talented but on the day did not catch the judges ear. The future of folk music in the British Isles would appear to be healthy. Congratulations to ALL who took part.Who knows what next year will bring. Keith

Catters what can I say, your international support is great. Its nice to have such strong support from overseas. I to have been trying to concentrate on a bit of university work I still have to do but failing!! For all those UK catters (& little Dorrit) I'm of to Cottingham folk club on the 8th of December after the broardcast (broardcast is 8pm till 9pm English time) so it would be good to catch some of you there. I'm still having trouble getting used to the idea of it all at the moment but I've had a great time right through the semi-finals, finals and am looking forward to what the future will bring. The sessions were cool as well!!!!

See ya soon and thanks

Sam

Well done the lot of you! We knew you could do it! I should have phoned to find out, but my nerves let me down, and I didn't like to on Saturday night as I didn't know what time it would finish. I hope they'll put you on the Whitby programme. One of the smaller festivals is Stainsby, not far from Chesterfield. It's years since I've been, but it was a very cosy and informal affair. Of course there is another closer to home...

Congrats. Do we get to see you this week?

Only trouble is, I had talked about the possibility of getting to the JUG with Bill recently, I would be scared stiff of going there now if that is the standard....

Jon, I sat next to Ian in the Jug tonight, fresh from listening to the concert, and it was just a normal session with everybody just jammin'. Ian entered the pub to a big cheer and then just unpacked his guitar and settled in. (He did get a free drink from the landlord for winning). I am no great shakes as a musician, and I can cope. We are of all standards. You would be most welcome.
