Thanks Liam's brother. Histories on my website are not very extensive, because I only give one's that I've done th research myself or have checked carefully for factual basis.

Here is a nice site run by the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association and here is a direct link to their Remembering The Old Songs page which they add to monthly. Many, many very nice things here! In addition to the well known stuff, they cover a number of great songs not overly discussed elsewhere, like Wait Till The Clouds Roll By and The Lily Of Arkansas, an Ozark variant of The Lowlands Of Holland.

For those who want to see a list before they go there, here is what they have discussed so far ~~ copied without adding any html, so you'll get it all in one paragraph.

A True Lover of Mine (Child #2) by Bob Waltz (11/95) The Cherry Tree Carol (Child #54) by Bob Waltz (12/95) The Wind and Rain (Child #10) by Bob Waltz (1/96) Papa, Papa, Build Me a Boat (Laws K12) by Lyle Lofgren (2/96) Barbara Allen (Child #84) by Bob Waltz (3/96) The Raging Sea, How It Roars (Child #289) by Lyle Lofgren (4/96) Johnson-Jinkson (Laws L4) by Lyle Lofgren (8/96) The Lily of Arkansas (Child #92A) by Bob Waltz (9/96) Henry Lee (Child #68) by Lyle Lofgren (10/96) Pretty Polly (Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight) (Child #4) by Bob Waltz (11/96) The Little Carpenter by Lyle Lofgren (12/96) Pretty Polly (Laws P36) by Bob Waltz (1/97) A Rose in Grandma's Garden (Laws M4, etc.) by Lyle Lofgren (2/97) The Banks of Claudy (Laws N40) by Bob Waltz (3/97) Little Margaret (Child #74) by Lyle Lofgren (4/97) The Death of Queen Jane (Child #170) by Bob Waltz (5/97) The Two Soldiers (Laws A17) by Lyle Lofgren (6/97) Charles Guiteau (Laws E11) by Bob Waltz (7/97) The Death of Wild Bill by Lyle and Elizabeth Lofgren (8/97) The Holland Handkerchief (Child #272) by Bob Waltz (9/97) The Three Babes (Child #79) by Lyle Lofgren (10/97) Herod and the Cock (Child #55) by Bob Waltz (11/97) The Fatal Flower Garden (Child #155) by Lyle Lofgren (12/97) Lizie Wan (Child #51) by Bob Waltz (1/98) Little Yellow Dog (Edward) (Child #13) by Lyle Lofgren (2/98) The Leaving of Liverpool by Bob Waltz (3/98) Barney McCoy by Lyle Lofgren (4/98) Wait Till the Clouds Roll By by Bob Waltz (5/98) The Wreck of Old 97 (Laws G2) by Lyle Lofgren (6/98) The Homespun Dress by Bob Waltz (7/98) The Faded Coat of Blue by Lyle Lofgren (8/98) Little Joe the Wrangler (Laws B5) by Bob Waltz (9/98) The Two Cruel Brothers (Laws M32) by Lyle Lofgren (10/98) Deep Elem Blues/Black Bottom Blues by Bob Waltz (11/98) Rhinordine (Laws P15) by Lyle Lofgren (12/98) Saint Helena by Bob Waltz (1/99) When First To This Country a Stranger I Came by Lyle Lofgren (2/99) The Joys of Mary by Bob Waltz (3/99) Prison Cell by Lyle Lofgren (4/99) The Wild Colonial Boy (Laws L20) by Bob Waltz (5/99) Fod! by Lyle Lofgren (6/99) The Swapping Boy by Bob Waltz (7/99) The Highwayman (Child #95) by Lyle Lofgren (8/99) The Rocky Banks of the Buffalo (Child #14) by Bob Waltz (9/99) The Gypsy Davey (Child #200) by Lyle Lofgren (10/99) Clayton Boone (Child #200) by Bob Waltz (11/99) Don't Let Your Deal Go Down by Lyle Lofgren (12/99)

I think it very interesting how differently people can approach a topic and I have to compliment both Bruce and Lesley for their sites.

All the best,
Dan

Leslie Nelson:

That is a very interesting site you are running. I only spent about fifteen minutes there but I shall be a frequent browser.

Thanks for making so much available.

Sourdough

There's mine at Folk Music of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales & America (http://www.contemplator.com)

And Bruce Olsen's Site: Roots of Folk: Old English, Scots, and Irish Songs and Tunes (http://users.erols.com/olsonw/)

And The Ballad Index (http://www.csufresno.edu/folklore/BalladIndexTOC.html)

These are a start.

My favorite threads here exchange information about the origin and history of old songs. I'm particularly interested in old stringband and hillbilly songs, and want to know if there are any websites out there where one can look up the background and history of traditional tunes.
