Here are the rest of the verses, you gotta love the lines about interlectuals and elections. Now that's clasical Australian humour. p@

It's on
(Don Henderson)

A sad story (D) you'll hear if you listen (A) to me,
About two men who could never (D) agree;
What one (G) called white the other (D) called black,
They'd argue (A) a while then step out the back....

Chorus:
And it's on (D)!
All reason (G) and logic are gone (D)!
Winning (G) the fight won't prove (D) that you're right,
It's sad (A), it's true, but it's on (D)!

When it was over they'd come back and then
The argument would become heated again;
Who'd won the last round they couldn't decide'
Till one asked the other… would he step outside?

They'd been fighting so long that could neither recall
What in the first place had started it all?
But they kept at it day in and day out
Now they're fighting to see what they're fighting about.

Just you imagine if intellectuals
Came to agreement by Queensberry's rules!
It could easily be that the square root of four
Was fifteen less three plus a smack in the jaw.

And if governments think that it makes better sense
To save on education and spend on defence;
Could easily be argued, on the same grounds
That elections should be… the best of ten rounds!

Gary Shearston sang "It's On" in the 1960s and recorded it together with a Kath Walker song " Must We Native Old Australians, in our Own Land Rank as Aliens"

We've just had a member of parliment in New South Wales, Australia cross the floor and beat up one of the other members, he insists he was sober, it put me in mind of this song and I'd like to sing it at my folk club. Could anyone help me with the tune, I rememeber the chorus but the verses would be a little folked the way I'm remembering it.
thanks
Patrick

Thanks, mudcats, it only needs one person to know and take the time. Thanks, especially, to Chris.

Alan

The song was written by Don Henderson. I have a copy in my 1970 copy of the Joy Durst Memorial Australian Song Collection, put out by the Victorian Folk Music Club.

You will have to excuse my lack of knowledge of html, but I will put the chords next to the word.

It's On
(Don Henderson)
Key of D, 6/8 time.

A sad story(D) you'll hear if you listen(A) to me,
About two men who could never(D)agree;
What one(G) called white the other(D) called black,
They'd argue(A) a while then step out the back....

Chorus:
And it's on(D)!
All reason(G) and logic are gone(D)!
Winning(G) the fight won't prove(D) that you're right,
It's sad(A), it's true, but it's on(D)!

When it was over they'd come back and then,
The argument would become heated again;
Who'd won the last round they couldn't decide,
So one asked the other would he step outside...
And it's on!

They'd been fighting so long they could neither recall,
What in the first place had started it all;
But they keep at it, day in and day out,
Now they're fighting to see what they're fighting about...
And it's on!

Just you imagine if intellectuals,
Came to agreement through Queensberry rules!
Could easily be argued that the square root of four,
Was fifteen less three plus a smack in the jaw!
And it's on!

And if Governments think that it makes better sense,
To save on education and spend on defence,
Could easily be argued that on the same grounds,
Elections should be .... the best of ten rounds...
And it's on!

I can post you a photocopy of the music if you send me your address.

Regards
Chris

Trevor Lucas recorded it in 1966 on an LP called 'Overlander', if no one comes up with the words in the meantime I'll post them in a couple of days.

Alan, I have the music at home but have a rehearsal tonight. I'm sure that a fellow Australian will get it for you soon. Regards, John.

PS I haven't seen Peter Parkhill perform for almost 30 years, but I'm in the wrong location now to know his whereabouts.

Can anyone (Down Under or anywhere) provide the lyrics for an Australian song called, I believe, "It's On".

Lines that stick include " It's on, all reason and logic are gone. Just winning the fight won't prove that you're right, It's sad, It's true, but it's on " (chorus)

"... elections would be the best of ten rounds"

I heard it in the sixties from Paul McNeill and later from an Aussie singer called Peter Parkhill.

PS Does anyone know whether Paul or Peter are still around?
