Subject: Traditional Song workshop, SW England From: Brian Peters Date: 08 Jan 16 - 07:55 AM For all singers of traditional song who'd like to broaden their knowledge and skills (and I believe a few of those still lurk around these parts), I'm running a workshop weekend with Martin and Shan Grabe at Halsway Manor, Somerset, on the last weekend in January. Spaces still available! Apart from being excellent singers and harmonisers, Martin and Shan bring to the course great expertise with song-seeking and archive work (M) and vocal technique (S). I'll be adding my knowledge of instrumental accompaniment, Child Ballads and various other things, and we'll all be teaching new repertoire and working on effective performance. We'll also have singarounds in the very cosy bar, which were a lot of fun last time we ran this course. Singing the Folk Tradition |
Subject: RE: Traditional Song workshop, SW England From: GUEST,Musket Date: 09 Jan 16 - 03:47 AM Sounds a wonderful event, good luck. Sadly, it wouldn't be practical for me to get down there, mainly because I'll be out of the country anyway! but certainly sounds tempting. Like many, I do try to introduce new arrangements of familiar songs and some Child ballads are always on my radar. To get tips and invite critical comments from such a group would be great. At many clubs these days, and especially the wider "acoustic and roots" venues, the saying by Sir Thomas Beecham rings true. "The English don't appreciate music but they love the noise it makes." |
