This Steve Robinson lived with his wife Maggie at Denby Dale in West Yorkshire. He and Maggie were regular participants and hosts at many festivals but they both had a particular love of Whitby and Staithes.In latter years he was very much involved in Folk events at the George pub in Upper Denby and hosted many wonderful evenings there to include celebrations of Saint George's Day and the traditional Christmas carols.

Steve sang accompanied songs with his guitar and also many unaccompanied songs....covering both a traditional and modern repertoire. He also delivered many humorous songs which held audiences of all ages. He could regularly be heard during Whitby folk week at the Station , Endeavour singarounds and the back room at the Black Horse. Maggie delivered thought - provoking and often funny monologues. They could often both be seen at Holmfirth and Cleckheaton where they ran sessions and singarounds. Of late , Steve and Maggie spent much time in Skipton with their family and he appeared at the folk club there to warm appreciation.Steve always took the time and trouble to welcome and encourage newcomers and younger participants to any of the sessions and events with which he was involved. He had a rare knack of making them feel comfortable, valued and at home .

He also attended Folk sessions on the first Sunday of each month at Fernandes pub in Wakefield and on the third Sunday of each month at the Bull And Fairhouse pub... again in Wakefield.He was always very much at home when joining in a jig or reel accompaniment too . He will be greatly missed by so many good friends there....he lit up these places with his friendship and rare talent . His other interests included running and fell-racing , walking , cycling, music, people, fly fishing and spending time with his wonderful family.

Steve will be missed for his lovely voice and guitar-playing , his wit and humour and his liking of good ale . Most of all , however, he will be remembered by me ( and so many others ) for the kind of PERSON he was......talented , tolerant, sincere, kind , sensitive and an unselfish and wonderful friend and family man. He will be so sadly missed by so many . I am proud to be considered to be his friend .

We will miss Steve. He was a lovely man who we first met at the Norwell Happening, near Newark, and also saw at other local festivals including Cleckheaton and Shepley.

What a gentle kind man. He always made you feel included. I feel very sad at his passing, one of the best now gone, but so glad to have all the happy memories.
I can't imagine how devastated Maggie is... I can only send her my love and let her know that I am so glad the I knew Steve - a one off - a truely special man.

Yes a fine tribute Mr Nuttall ~ Steve was originally from Hull and had worked in Barnsley ~ he had been a folky in his Hull days and his father was a fisherman

He lived quite close to Denby Dale pie hall and was regular at the folk club run by Sue McBurney which had Will Noble, and Bob Auty as regulars ~ left over from the old Cherry Tree folk club days

Yes, this was devastating news indeed.
I would heartily endorse every word you wrote, Dave - but particularly the final para, where you summed him up to a T (Yorkshire T, naturally!).

Steve was such a lovely guy, kind and generous, straight and sincere. And a fantastic singer who sang the songs he believed in, so well.
He was also a fund of knowledge and right-minded opinion!

I too feel privileged to have known (and sung with) Steve, and the folk world will be much the poorer with his passing.
"One of life's good guys", for sure. And we've lost far too many of those in the past 18 months.
My deepest sympathies to Maggie and all the family.

I was very upset to hear this news from my friend Gifford Rolfe this morning. Steve was a smashing bloke with a lovely voice and a great choice of songs.
I first met him at the Brewer's Pride session in Ossett and then, when I moved to Beverley he was often there visiting family and attending our sessions in the Sun Inn throughout the year and at the festival in June.
I think that the last time I saw him was at the Denby Dale Pie Hall session where he will be much missed.

Steve will be greatly missed at the Pie Crust Folk Club, not just as a super performer, but as a great ambassador for the club. He was 'well known in the 'Folk World' and was responsible for bringing new performers to the Pie Hall. Our busy monthly meetings were often due to Steve spreading the Pie Crust gospel! Steve was a genuinely, sincere man and always welcomed people to the club. We shall all miss him so much.

I got to know Steve in recent years through our participation at folksong sessions in Wakefield - I also managed to get up to Emley to a session that he & Maggie put on a couple of years ago.
I can only echo all the sentiments expressed in this thread about Steve - the sad news came to me via Dave Nuttall's text and I just couldn't comprehend it.
My memory of Steve was all of the aforementioned by the many above, and also, whenever we crossed paths over this past 1-2 years, him saying, 'can you sing Judas Bus for me, Dick'. That song now takes on a very special place in my heart.
I shall endeavour to get along on Mon 18 Jan

Steve was a wonderful, great and friendly guy who with his lovely wife Maggie entertained us each session at the Black Bull Bender, Tranmire, Whitby and other venues including Ken Bridge, Scotland, Saltburn Folk Festival and other places in between, We have known Steve and Maggie for a number of years now and it will be so strange not to see his face and listen to his beautiful singing voice, May you sing from above Steve, RIP.

We first went to Whitby in 2012 and Steve was so kind,supportive and interested in us 'newbies'. We have become regulars at the Festival and always look out for his handsome, friendly face. He always looked as 'fit as flea' so we are so shocked to hear of his death. Reading through all the previous comments he was obviously one of those incredibly rare and generous men who was kind to everyone. A great loss too many and an immeasurable loss to his family. We didn't even know his name. It was only when I saw I photo on Facebook that I realised who he was.

Steve was great company, a lovely bloke and a fine singer. He and Maggie always made us very welcome in the Whitby Station sessions, and when Derek first brought his bike to Whitby, Steve took him out on the moors and showed him some good rides. In such sad times, all these tributes to Steve have been a pleasure to read - particularly that from Dave Nuttall. Had I heard the news sooner, I would like to think that would have been the sentiments I would have written.
The Family have known Steve & Maggie for many, many years and it was always a pleasure to meet up with them at Festivals and elsewhere. They always made valuable contributions to the many singarounds we have hosted.

As has been said, you didn't just get Steve the Singer - you got the full, rounded package. He had the extraordinary ability to make you feel completely comfortable in his company.
He was a truly lovely guy and a pleasure to have known as a friend - we'll miss the lack of his presence for a long time to come. Love to Maggie and the family, Tom Wilson

The attendance at Steve's do was unbelievable, folkies came from far and wide and family from overseas ~

The George upper Cumberworth was overfull with people who had been unable to get into the service turning up at the pub which supplied a never ending supply of sandwiches and savouries

Well I went home and had lunch returning for a song and music session for more local people and those in campers ~ the Monday folk club started as I left!!

Brian Kaye came by Taxi to the George and although not well looks as though he is gettinga bit better ~ life goes on though a gentleman is no longer with us ~~
