Subject: New Folk Club Organisation (or is it?)

Of the opinion that many recent threads on Mudcat have become too heavy and argumentative, could I try to lighten things up with this photo of the headquarters of a new organisation?

I suggest that we start of with suggested items for the agenda for the committee meetings of the new organisation.

But did you dare to press the bell?

ITEM 1: That the electric bell at the door of our new London headquarters be replaced by a much more suitable acoustic one.

No doubt all meetings will start half an hour late.

Hang on - we haven't elected the president and committee yet...

Order! Order!

Surely we first need to answer the question "What is a folk club organiser" and decide if anyone born after 1954 is eligible?

No no - first we have to define "folk club"...

(I'm just getting my coat).

No no - first we have to define "folk club"...

Too hasty. Before we can define "folk club" we have to define 'club' and 'folk'.

With the latter word in mind I am going to propose:-
ITEM 3: That we set up a sub-committee to redefine the word 'folk' That this sub-committee be given the power to redefine any other dictionary word that would assist them in their task. The creation of the sub-committee be considered a matter of urgency so that, hopefully, they will be able to present their results at the ceremonies to mark the centenary of the 1954 definition.

Ah - "club" is easy - thus:

A "CLUB" is an instrument with which to belabour the buttocks of those who argue about the definition of "FOLK".

How are the members supposed to roll their trouser legs up when wearing nicky tams?

At one time this would have qualified you, Musket. However, with the coming of the hipster the regulations had to be changed.

Come, come. This is not a new organisation. It is ancient and venerable having received a charter from Henry VIII who invented the folk process by nicking other people's songs, rewriting them a bit and passing them off as his own.

Come off it, Bryan. Next you will be claiming that Henry VIII didn't write Greensleeves just because it was referred to in print before he was born.

If we have Singers Nights (and I hope we will have) should the apostrophe go after the 's' or between the letters r and s? Indeed should we have that punctuation at all?

The first option means the night is possessed by the singers which surely is as it should be but if we assert that Singer's is the correct route to go down, that implies we only have one of 'em (the first to turn up?) which makes us so-ooo exclusive!

This has kept me awake at nights off and on, now for 4 decades!

Heh, heh you'll note that in the first sentence, I've used 's' (doh) but you'll get my drift.

You misunderstand, Clive. Spelling has lapsed over the centuries. Back in Good(?) King Hal's (sic) time, singing was a dangerous business. Every singer had an armed guardian known as a Singer's Knight.

Every singer had an armed guardian known as a Singer's Knight.

.... and on every single occasion when a particular move was made on a chess board - (Singer's Knight takes Musician's Queen) - a war broke out within days.

I am concerned that writing these items down prevents the folk process. They should be an oral bequest

Pick the phone up, I'll give you an oral bequest alright.
