Subject: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 03:16 PM I been semi retired for a few years but still did software consulting. I am sick of the corporate rat race so officially hung up my spurs. Now to pocket watches and fish and grand babies with an ooccasional publication on some pet theory. Oh yes |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 03:18 PM I can now wear my pants up to my man boobs and say geezer, I earned it :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Bill D Date: 11 Jan 16 - 03:59 PM One of the first things that dawns on you is that you can't comprehend how you ever had time to go to work at all! Happy filling those extra hours... for many years... |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Backwoodsman Date: 11 Jan 16 - 03:59 PM I've always farted a lot, and I got a smelly dog when I retired, but no way in hell am I going to start smoking anything at my age! Enjoy retirement, dude - I hope you find it's the best job you've ever had, just as I did! |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 04:03 PM I got my old smelly dog right next to me. He doesn't say much but listens to my music without objection Lol |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: fat B****rd Date: 11 Jan 16 - 04:10 PM Be happy, Dan. Don't forget to grow hairy ears with pendulous lobes!! ATB from Charlie |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 05:29 PM I may grow a gandolf beard like my friends over the pond also. I want one of those wizard kind so kids will think I have magic.. I do, well if my misses lets me :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 05:36 PM Can't figure out how an 18 year old like me became 62... Sucks actually but I will let ya know how my popcorn Sutton beard goes. I suspect two days my misses will say oh no you don't |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 05:39 PM Maybe I will take up moonshining like my application roots. Gotta figure out how to makessingle malt for my buddy Kendall |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: maeve Date: 11 Jan 16 - 06:06 PM Appalachian roots are even better. You've got 'em, so flaunt 'em. Happy for you, Dan. You be happy, too, or else. Maeve |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Donuel Date: 11 Jan 16 - 07:28 PM What I have seen of my fathers retirement and my own is that there is the special project that never has the energy required or the wakeful time to accomplish. This need not be but it is a trend far too often. All in all retirement in the country keeps you most fit. Enjoy |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Rapparee Date: 11 Jan 16 - 07:42 PM Hanging it up, huh? Retirement expands to fill the time available, and soon you'll be wondering how you ever had time for "work." |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: ChanteyLass Date: 11 Jan 16 - 08:19 PM Congratulations! Now start enjoying the rest of your life! |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 11 Jan 16 - 08:26 PM Gotta figure out what I want to do now. I have a book to finish I guess that's a start. Do some theory, maybe. Get back involved with the autism charity. Maybe do nothing for as long as I want dunno... |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Joe_F Date: 11 Jan 16 - 08:57 PM Yeah, sometimes it takes me 4 hours to get up, exercise, run around the block, shower, make breakfast, eat it, & wash the dishes. Then I read the news, and it's lunch time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Jan 16 - 09:01 PM I retired 8 year ago! oops, someone can't count - I retired in February 2007 so it's almost 9 years. where did the time go? enjoy you (full) retirement sandra |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Janie Date: 11 Jan 16 - 09:50 PM Enjoy! (and I am green with envy.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 11 Jan 16 - 10:43 PM I retired in 2007 also...Sept. 30. Yet I dream of working at least once a week. In these dreams I am either selling (which I did wholesale for 34 years), or discussing sales with my manager. The funny thing is that I never make any sales in these dreams. As I was rather successful in my job, I guess the dream is a way to tell me not to go back. Still-in-all, it's rather humiliating not to make any dream sales. Its rather like when I used to sleep sans clothing that I would be doing non-sexual things stark nekkid in dreamland. Thank god I never wore a Maidenform bra, for those of you who remember their 1950s/60s 'I dreamed...' advert promos. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,HiLo Date: 12 Jan 16 - 02:17 AM Enjoy it , sure is the best life style ever. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,Musket Date: 12 Jan 16 - 02:35 AM I'd best not mention that I tried retirement for just over a year but got tempted back into the rat race last summer. I would say I never looked back, but I haven't the ruddy time to turn my head anyway... I'm envious of anyone who retires and enjoys it. Good luck mate. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Ebbie Date: 12 Jan 16 - 02:49 AM The only downside, Dan, is that once you retire you never get a day off. Enjoy! |

Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,MikeL2 Date: 12 Jan 16 - 05:51 AM Hi Dan Enjoy your retirement. You sure as hell deserved it. I have been retired over 20 years now, and I haven't once missed my work. Like Bill said, how the hell did I ever find time to work. Regards Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: gnu Date: 12 Jan 16 - 06:01 AM Perhaps start by celebrating with a Steelers game? ENJOY! |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Rapparee Date: 12 Jan 16 - 08:53 AM Change the name of your bathroom to "Jim." Then you can say you went to the Jim first thing in the morning. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Jan 16 - 10:13 AM I can't decide if I'm retired or just unemployed... whatever it is, I started doing it 3 years ago now, and haven't had a chest pain or a major suicidal depression since. House doesn't look any neater, there are even more things to do on my 'to do' pile, but I sure as hell don't miss the commute or the ingratitude, the bullying or being taken advantage of. Enjoy your days, make more memories and pass them on to the grandbabies. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: gnu Date: 12 Jan 16 - 10:36 AM Ice fishing is underway here and on salt water bays the smelts are fast and furious from about 3PM on... nice size too. Not your kettle of fish though, I suppose. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 12 Jan 16 - 10:40 AM Grand baby business for sure :-) fire trucks and barbie dolls for this guy. I have to find another Hobby that requires no thinking. Spent to many yyears with math. Maybe fixing watches with my amish friend but now it's nothing for as long as I can. Oh yes |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Ebbie Date: 12 Jan 16 - 12:58 PM I remember reading about one guy's plans for retirement. He said that for the first three months "I'm going to just sit in my rocker on the porch. Then after that, I'll rock." |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 12 Jan 16 - 01:50 PM Good idea Ebbie |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Ed T Date: 12 Jan 16 - 01:56 PM Good wishes to you. I did it almost two years ago, and never look back. I was offered contracts from my former employer, and others, But, I never even considered giving up the retirement freedom that I worked for for 36, plus, years. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: gnu Date: 12 Jan 16 - 03:12 PM Ebbie... love it! |

Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Leadfingers Date: 12 Jan 16 - 09:32 PM Only downside is no more paid holidays |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Backwoodsman Date: 13 Jan 16 - 08:02 AM Naaawww, it's one long paid holiday, Terry! The DWP and my private pension provider keep thrusting money into my hot, sweaty hand for spending my days walking my dog, playing my guitars and mandolin (still not as well as I'd like), drinking tea, eating scones, occasionally flicking a duster around and pushing the Dyson up and down, sitting in Costa Coffee with a nice skinny latte watching the world go by, and loads of other stuff. 😎 Best job I've ever had, by a lot!👍 |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Ed T Date: 13 Jan 16 - 01:18 PM Last week, when making a car maintainance appointment, I understood it to be a day earlier then it was. No, not memory issues. Just a side benefit of retirement- increased freedom from the clock. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 13 Jan 16 - 01:42 PM In America we have an excellent retirement program, you pay into ssi your whole life and the government keeps it :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Backwoodsman Date: 13 Jan 16 - 02:09 PM .......and watching cricket on the telly - forgot to mention the cricket (Test Match against South Africa starting tomorrow - wooooooo-hoo!). 😎 |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: MGM·Lion Date: 13 Jan 16 - 02:24 PM ... and tennis. In my student days, 1952-55, I used to watch Wimbledon pretty well right thru in the Long Vacation: something I missed grievously when I had to work & couldn't get to the telly while Wimbers was on. Being able to watch as much of Grand Slam, and other, tennis tournaments as I want once again has been one of the blessings of retirement. ≈M≈ |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,# Date: 13 Jan 16 - 02:58 PM Congratulations, Dan. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Backwoodsman Date: 13 Jan 16 - 03:53 PM Not much of a tennis man, Michael, not since the arrival of plastic racquets. Can't do with the interminable baseline rallies and the grunting and screaming. But, chacun a son gout as they say at Roland Garros (and apologies for the missing acute and circumflex - HTML defeats me!). |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: gnu Date: 13 Jan 16 - 05:19 PM "Can't do with the interminable baseline rallies and the grunting and screaming." That's what she said. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,# Date: 13 Jan 16 - 05:30 PM "But, chacun a son gout as they say at Roland Garros (and apologies for the missing acute and circumflex - HTML defeats me!)." HTML defeats me too. But for everything else there's Google. Chacun à son goût :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: gnu Date: 13 Jan 16 - 05:50 PM Ahhh, indeed #, but it's the taste of the good life if it's cooked right. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,# Date: 13 Jan 16 - 06:01 PM True, gnu. Eau de toilette is just beer after an hour. Or in other words, Eau de toilette est juste de la bière après une heure. For everything else there's Google. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 13 Jan 16 - 06:56 PM No moonshining, taking up making a still. I just saw that I qualify for new Yorks medical weed.. Retirement is getting better and better I think Now when will it be implemented, I will be there |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Amos Date: 13 Jan 16 - 10:32 PM Welcome to the growing club of baby boomers on the prowl, Dan! Whatever star-high plans you make, don't fret about whether you are dutiful about fulfilling them. My mantra has been "Why not? I have the day off!"/ A |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 13 Jan 16 - 10:51 PM Perfect Amos great advice |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: gnu Date: 13 Jan 16 - 10:56 PM The weed be good ONLY if it really is medical weed, Dan. Beware of the snake oil salesmen. Three docs told me it would be good for me but NOT under the Health Canada "rules" as they exist. So, I suffer but I agree with my docs... the way it works now is just not right... big money talks even when people like me and FAR worse off suffer. I guess I'll just have to wait and hope on accounta I ain't takin the shit the big drug companies are pushin now. Dog damn the pusher. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Fossil Date: 14 Jan 16 - 01:57 AM I am a registered pharmacist here in New Zealand. This year, at the age of 72, I have decided that when my license to kill runs out, in March 2016, I am not going to renew it. Freedom!!! I intend to find other stuff to do. I still have my yacht, so can sail the Pacific Ocean, the Cook Strait and the Tasman Sea, which I intend to do before it all gets too much. I *will* learn all the chords to "You Got a Friend" and play it all through at least once without looking at the chart. I will try other things, too. Not bunjy jumping (I flew hang gliders for many years and regard it as a waste of time). Kite surfing, maybe. Or just having fun. Tramping the trails. Cruising - the Missus will like that! Or whatever. Have fun, OldDude! I'm right behind ya! |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: MMario Date: 14 Jan 16 - 02:46 AM 252 days to go - not that I'm counting... |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: GUEST,Musket Date: 14 Jan 16 - 03:17 AM Oh heck. On this, I'm with Michael, not BWM. Mind you, a) I only watch it for the grunting.. b) I'm the worlds leading expert for two weeks then ignore tennis for the next 50 weeks, like most tennis fans in The UK. I don't have a say in this thread though, having given up retirement for the blessed rat race. I missed interfering if truth be known. |

Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: olddude Date: 15 Jan 16 - 12:02 AM Amen bugsy... Amen... Today was very constructive. I napped on the couch with my dogs. They are teaching me how to sleep 18 hours. Then I wound up several watches.. Oh yes exhausted :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Ebbie Date: 15 Jan 16 - 01:07 AM Sorry, Dan- but that's going to get old pretty fast. Get excited about something- and don't wait until summer! I'm pretty busy most days but only for about 2 or three hours a day. In fact, only Saturdays are totally non-scheduled. That lets me feel productive while having *lots* of time off. |
Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: ragdall Date: 15 Jan 16 - 02:37 AM Congratulations Bugsy and Mrs Bugsy. I hope that you enjoy one another's company. Dan, it sounds as if you have experts willing to train you, you lucky dog. rags |

Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Backwoodsman Date: 15 Jan 16 - 09:59 AM If it feels good, Dan, do it - or not! You don't sound the kind of guy who will sit on his arse for the rest of his life, I'm pretty sure you'll get busy but, if a rest feels good for a while, go for it! I keep busy, but only as busy as I want to be. |

Subject: RE: BS: Officially retired From: Midchuck Date: 15 Jan 16 - 08:35 PM I retired in '09. I sent email to a number of friends, announcing retirement. One "friend" replied: "A retired lawyer! That's the second best kind!" My neighbor, also retired, was asked who he liked it. He just said "Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Sunday." |
