Nice article that gives you multiple options and caveats for capturing streaming video and sound.

If you are a regular user of such "educational tools" and are klutzy with tech the lifetime service would be worth the fee.

There is also the open-source 7zip.

Since exe files have been discussed, there are 'self extracting archives' which are exe files (or bin files) that contain an archive and an unarchive program. You run the exe and it unpacks itself. These only work in windows so you wouldn't normally see a video, say, packed like this - that would be very suspicious. But windows software sometimes is. If you have an exe that you think is a sef-extracting archive and you want to extract it without running it then open it in winzip/7zip. If it won't, be even more suspicious. (Caveat - I haven't done that for years - back in the eMule days - but it worked then.)

So, to answer the question about RAR files:
RAR is the native format of WinRAR archiver. Like other archives, RAR files are data containers, they store one or several files in the compressed form. After you download an RAR file from Internet, you need to unpack its contents in order to use it.
from http://www.rarlab.com/rar_file.htm

I use WinZIP to open RAR and other compressed files.

HUGE thanks to Guest,# for finding the YouTube version of this program when I could not, and to Acme for the niftiest, user-friendliest capture tool I've ever used, which will be so helpful in capturing songs our band will learn.

I was also able to DL church video montages I'd created that are no longer availabe where they were created-- great retirement memories as well as local sights and sounds to share with new friends. Those montages feature folks long gone-- SO precious to us and others. Thank you, thankyou, thank you.

Can we pls add SOLVED to the thread name?
Actually, no. People may want to discuss the technicalities of RAR files. Our threads are for discussion and general learning, not just to answer the question posed in the original post. We don't go through and add "he's dead now" to Happy Birthday threads, once birthdays are no longer happy...

That is one great advantage of being a Linux user, Acme. With the vast volumes of software within the distributions' own repositories, there can be little or no need to look elsewhere. And it's not too difficult to find safe sources for the rare occasion one does have to look outside these.

The trick is knowing safe places to download from. I've managed to do so safely in the past, but I've also tried to download clean versions of free software from what looked like a safe site and ended up with all of my browsers hijacked. It's a tough gig, finding reliable sources of some software and files.

Raspberry PI OS distributions (some of which are also flavours of Linux) also can come as BitTorrent downloads, BitTorrent is a very valuable system, which some bad people also use.

If you can find the video on YouTube, a program like KeepVid can capture it for you. KeepVid I keep a link to it on my browser bookmark bar, and have captured a few videos that I couldn't get any other way. It gives you a variety of sizes and file quality types to choose from.

They have an online shop that does not include this item. Next I try to reach the producer. Unless one of you would like to join the effort to stop burdening people of color by once again efaulting to their taking care of white folks-- who could do this on our own, among ourselves.

Does the History channel not have an Education Dept you can contact to ask if they provide DVDs in affordable licensed Education Packs ?

I don't see this as a pirating. I see it as an opportunity to apply an antiracism training tool already made available online.

Since the places I'll use it tend not to be online for streaming the $1.99 Amazon option, I need a copy I can use in workshops. To me it's a justice issue that the History Channel has failed to make an item of Black History openly stated in the program as intended for education, accessible. I have no commercial benefit from having a copy I can use as intended.

I spent the afternoon photographing a slide show out of the replay on my dvr and next I'll take an mp3 of the narration. But since all the images are fuzzy vintage stills and film, I'd much prefer to teach ftom a copy of it as produced!

Just to clarify one thing, #

Not all torrents are bad. As an example, my preferred Linux distribution, OpenSuse, offers as torrent as one means of download.

The area asked about in the OP is a dodgy one though.

Thank you Jon and Vashta for the info on torrent downloads. I was completely unaware and I certainly will not have any hand in pirated or pirating people's material. And, cnd, thank you for the explanation about .exe files and part of the 'hacking' process.

You folks are something else and I truly appreciate what you've told me. :-)

it comes in an ".exe" file. So while downloading it doesn't give you a virus, actually running its contents is almost an almost 100% guaranteed way of getting your computer hacked.

Wow! Talk about misinformed bollocks...

#, I downloaded it and got no virus (made sure by running a anti-virus program afterwards, unless it was 1 of 14 "minor" threats that popped up), but the serious danger is in running the .exe file. There is physically no way it could be either a movie or a sound bit. ".exe's" install stuff on your computer. For example, when you download Audacity off the internet, it comes in an ".exe" file. So while downloading it doesn't give you a virus, actually running its contents is almost an almost 100% guaranteed way of getting your computer hacked.

Pirated is an understood element of bit torrent file downloads.

Miro is a program used in conjunction with these downloads. Pirate Bay also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_3LLoiVQiw

Maybe #.

Sill the risk of this containing something malicious exists and even if you are safe, you may still be passing something infected on to someone else.

Even if the file itself works and is not infected, you would probably be involving yourself in distributing pirated material.

Your risks of course.

As a general rule torrent downloads are extremely hazardous to the health of your computer and the safety of your data. It's worth the cost to buy the disk versus coping with a virus-ridden computer.

I checked. DO NOT download that. I downloaded it (I have virus software), and while the download itself was not a virus, once you manage to extract it, it only has a ".exe" document, which means I am 100% sure it's a virus. It is NOT safe, do NOT extract or run the exe.

Following your link the download is an ISO file. According to the information at this LINK you can burn that file directly to a DVD disk.

Very few email services will tolerate people sending or receiving something that big.

Downloading torrents is a painful and hazardous business, and may well require you to download a torrent downloader first. You will have to describe exactly what your computer setup is.

Almost certainly you'll be able to buy it on disk, which is a far preferable option.
