Every half term, we used to stay with my Granny in Brigg. And Brigg Fair cropped up four times! Ruairidh Greig talked about Joseph Taylor and the White Hare was mentioned in Nancy Kerr's song;

Anthems In Eden (the song cycle, not the whole CD), by Shirley and Dolly, has long been on my list of eight desert island discs. Not forgetting the contribution of the much-loved, much-lamented, wonderful David Munrow. It was lovely to hear Shirley on Private Passions. She mischievously challenged her interviewer to find an example of a Handel piece sung by an untrained voice!

You're right on both counts, Guest Joe G!
Radio 3 does a lot for the promotion of the spectrum of folk music, presenting it in an informed context and a sensible, non-sensational manner while not losing sight of its entertainment value.
The difficulty of "signposting" individual musical items is recognised, though, and the various programmes' playlists go some way towards addressing this.

In some ways the BBC web pages are brilliant, in other ways they baffle me too.

Radio 3 is the first place I would look for folk music content on the radio - there is a lot of it in programmes such as Late Junction and World on 3. I scour the Radio Times each week to what is coming up - only listings magazine worth considering!

Radio 3 continuity announcers say, "For full details, see the Folk Connections website."

But there isn't a front page! At least, I can't find one.

There are pages for individual programmes - with lots of interesting clips - but there is no description of the whole weekend. Very strange.

Very nice stuff on Afternoon On 3 today (Friday) from Nancy Kerr and James Fagan. Some unaccompanied singing, some duet, some with fiddle and plucked thing (bouzouki? Come on, I'm a harmonica man!) and some with the BBC Concert Orchestra. We even got the Archers theme during their break! Lovely, fresh, flexible voices without a hint of affectation. Get it on iPlayer! That's Radio 3 by the way.

Presumably, the BBC wants Folk Connections to retain its classical music listeners and attract new listeners to Radio 3.

I don't think the publicity for Folk Connections reached most people with an interest in folk, except those who are already regular Radio 3 listeners.

There are some indications of integration in the programmes and announcements on Radio 3. But I'm afraid Folk Connections is unlikely to attract many new listeners to either Radio 3 or folk music.

That is a shame, because it has a lot to offer. But I shall enjoy it!

There's a lack of publicity for radio generally. We've recently gone back - after some decades - to buying Radio Times, because other listing mags have either dropped radio in the face of more and more TV channels or are useless - they'll say 'composer of the week' without saying who. The BBC website is good, but to scan the week ahead I prefer a listings mag.

But the posts here are welcome - thanks for those.

(Actually some people only think there is one theory - the conspiracy cock up - but that is another subject!)Under the conspiracy theory, the BBC are reacting to continued pressure from people like us to put on some folk music at last, then can say, well no one listened, so no demand! The focus is on the Modern period and Delius's English Rhapsody, Brigg Fair. 'Brigg Fair', the folksong, was 'collected' by Grainger in 1905 after a musical festival in the North Lincolnshire town of Brigg. When Delius heard Grainger's own arrangement of the song for solo tenor and chorus, he asked his permission to use it as the basis for this magnificent orchestral theme and variations.

2:00pm BBC Radio 3 Afternoon on 3
The BBC Concert Orchestra are joined by the folk musicians Nancy Kerr and James Fagan in a specially arranged programme featuring folk-inspired orchestral music by the likes of Holst, Moeran and Britten alongside traditional song and dance tunes.

We used to visit my Granny in Brigg every half term. She was living there when Percy Grainger first came to the North Lincolnshire Musical Festival in 1905 - and she may well have attended it too. I never thought to ask her.

In their concert, James sings Brigg Fair, while Nancy sings Fol the day, her tribute to Joseph Taylor. Just wonderful!

The content is wonderful, but the branding is haphazard - and the publicity is minimal.
