Subject: What has become of Tomas Lynch ?
From: Murray MacLeod
Date: 29 Jan 16 - 06:06 PM

For anybody not familiar with the name, Tomas Lynch is (was?) one of the finest singers of traditional music I have ever heard, not to mention one of the most inventive guitar players and uillean pipers it has ever been my pleasure to see and hear.... staggeringly talented. Kind of like an Irish Brian Peters.

It has been quite a few years since I have seen his name mentioned in connection with any performances, festival appearances etc, and a google search reveals nothing. I am assuming that he may have experienced health problems which have curtailed his performing, but that is just guesswork on my part.

I am sure somebody out there knows the inside story, and can hopefully share at least some of it.

There is one video on Youtube, Whiskey in the jar which shows of Tomas' amazing voice and superb guitar work on a rather unlikely song ... I have fond memories of seeing him do this live at a couple of gigs in Scotland years ago ,and it was truly magical.

He collaborated a lot with Ron Kavana a number of years ago. Ron is another exceptional musician who just vanished below the radar, though I hear he's now involved in academia. He could be the man to answer your enquiry - if you can find him!

There was this in 2011
" Tomas Lynch did the floor spot. Lynch is beginning to return to performance after a long sabbatical. Last night showed he'd not forgotten how to do the job. A dozen or so years ago he was one of those ubiquitous musicians who turned up on everybody's albums and was part of the 'supergroup' Kavana, McNeill, Lynch & Lupari. Watch for his imminent resurrection!"

Well we saw that supergroup in action in what must have been the late 90s but they came to nothing. Brian McNeill penned some brilliant songs and was a fine musician, though Gino, fabulous bodhranista that he was, was just a bit too much. We thought they might have become the Next Big Thing. But we thought that about the Lakemen too...

To thoses who posed the Question 'What happened to Tomas Lynch'

This IS Tomas Lynch replying;

Firstly, I would like to thank the people, who expressed an interest, I didn't realise people remembered;

The material was sent to me from someone I have never met, who resides in the United States (Where I've never played!)

I owe him, Jack Dixon, a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake, Murray MacLeod speculated that illness may have played a part in my long layoff, a bloody good guest, Murray!!

But I wasn't ill, someone else was, that was the immediate cause of me stopping in 2000, (Too long/private a story to go into) after that events followed events, I believe its called life.

Through this I managed to record a second album called 'Worn by The Weather', but it did not achieve a commercial release, however I am planning to do a run of it myself, and sell it at gigs, however sparse they maybe.
I continued to write tunes and arrange songs, whilst not gigging and I am left with material for two CDs of self penned tunes and two albums of songs with traditional tunes.

As my email is well known and on the net, tomas.lynch@btinternet.com, will get to me.
Thanks. Tomas.

Like many of you I've been captivated by the talent of Tomas Lynch and was delighted to track him down several months ago. He's been through a rough period but I think he's a fighter and wants to get back in the saddle again.

I would urge any agents, festival organisers or folk clubs to consider booking him. A glimpse of the YouTube link above will tell you all you need to know. He's a stunner!

I remember Tomas in what was probably his pomp.

If, as seems likely, he is performing again then if he is only half as good as he was then he will be at least twice as good as some of the dross the gets booked at "Folk Festivals" these days.

"Worn by the Weather" has a review online. In the review, the statement is made that in 2004, Lynch's significant other died. They had at least one child together.

Clickies and I don't mix, but here's the URL:

Thanks Tomas for the swift reply, well worth the MP3's all for a tenner into Cancer Research box! Have a listen folks, you like Irish, pipes, whistles and home crafted music from the heart, this is one. Sounds like a cross between Kieran Halpin, The Doonans and Fluke! Well worth a listen.
