I heard yesterday on facebook that Jack Forbes had died. Best known for writing Fiddler's Green and a member of the Hoy Shanty Crew.
I cannot say I knew Jack personally so I am not in the best position to write the obituary.

Which 'Fiddler's Green' did he write?
My old colleague, John Conolly from Grimsby, wrote the song that has circled the globe since he first made it circa 1967....I don't know of the one to which you refer..
My condolences to the Hoy Shanty Crew and this family.

Farewell, Jack. I first heard 'Rolling Down The River' when Jim and Johnny sang it way back when, and I must have heard it a hundred times or more in Lancaster, Liverpool, Bristol, Swansea, Cardiff, Portsmouth, Brest, Douarnenez, Mystic Seaport and other maritime festivals that I have sung at. A great tribute to a great writer.

Just heard the sad news. He was a fine singer and I know his song Rolling Down the River will remain a folk standard . But most of all he was a thoroughly good bloke. I shall miss him at the Billet. My condolences to his family. R.I.P. Jack.

A sad loss. We put Rolling Down The River on at Duton Hill Folk Club a couple of years ago and it was a great show, with Jack narrating and singing all the way through and Slow Loris supplying musical accompaniment.

And he wrote many songs about life and history in this corner of Essex. A lovely man with some grand songs and stories. We'll miss him

I'd love to buy a cd or download some songs of Jack forbes, especially daytrip to southend on sea. Does anyone have any idea if songs exist to buy. I'd be grateful for any information.

Hi all, my first visit to Mudcat for over a year just seen this Jack Forbes thread. I knew Jack personally very well and he was smashing to know! Very talented, very modest, very smiley. I unknowingly parked outside his house to go to Hoy at Anchor and he came out and we walked together to club. He told me an anecdote about being at a club once and someone sung Rolling Down River. A friend of Jacks asked the singer if he knew who sung that song? He replied "yes Jack Forbes, but he's dead now" Jack's friend ran over to Jack & said come with me . . . he then introduced "dead" Jack to the singer !! For all that are wondering I also asked Jack "What does TEU stand for?" and his reply was "Nothing, I made it up, it just went in the line" Jack did a whole evening spot at The Sun in Billericay and I was there - it was a super evening and now VERY glad I saw it. He will be missed by me. Jo-Jo

TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) is the unit of the capacity of a container ship, a container terminal and the statistics of the container transit in a port.
The two most common international standardised containers are those of twenty and forty foot. Depending on whether the ship loads twenty or forty-foot containers or a combination of the two, the number of containers held onboard the ship will differ. So as to express the capacity of a container ship in a uniform manner, the number of containers that the ship can load is converted into a number of containers of the smallest size, i.e. those that are twenty foot in length.
A forty-foot container is regarded as two twenty-foot containers or 2 TEU. How many TEU a container is, is calculated by dividing the container's actual length by twenty. In terms of costs, reference is often made to costs per TEU, which means that these costs will double for 40Ft units.
