They can sing what words they like, the playing and overall sound is most important to me.

I never saw this line up of Johnny Kidd & the Pirates unfortunately, although I saw these Pirates when they reformed in the mid 1970s. However I regularly saw James Royal & the Hawks, resident support band at the Big Beat Club in Harrow, North London around 1963-64 who featured this song and others from the Liverpool heavy power trio The Big Three. Their guitarist Micky King was years ahead of his time!

Hi Bonzo. I listened to your song. I agree with you that it's a good one. Reminds me of Elvis.

However, the years have passed, and as an (ahem) mature female, I'm disturbed by its combination of aggressive plus dependent. My advice to any young woman facing this mix of emotions in a lover would be, "Sweetie, head for the hills!"

The Beatles had a short song that included,

Oh darling, if you leave me, I'll never make it alone.
Believe when I tell you, I'll never do you no harm!

That song gave me the whimwhams, and even when it was new I hoped it was a parody.

Best B side I ever heard was "Then I've Got Everthing" by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates - knocked Merseybeat groups for six in 1963!!

OMG - the first one out the box was Gary Glitter! 100% sure I never bought THAT: think we inherited it after my in-laws' house was cleared! And it gets worse.... the B-side of "I Love You Love me Love" is "Hands Up! It's a Stick-Up".. Ahem!!

I listened to it on you tube. it was from an old verve 45, so it could be the record I suppose. Not having listened to a lot of Janis Ian I am not really familiar with her singing, but it does sound suspiciously off key.

I think I remember hearing that 45 with music from The Nutcracker back in the day.

HILo thinks Janis Joplin was out of tune on his 45, and he could be right, but here are some things to eliminate before before blaming the artist:

1. The record has been warped by heat.
2. The hole is not in the center of the disk. (I've seen this.)
3. The record player is getting old and it's not going at a steady
    speed.

There could be other factors.

Quite right, Charlie - just another of those studio concoctions which became such a hit that musicians had to appear in public to play it!

Guest Lin, I listened to the Janis Ian song you mentioned. She seems out of tune on most of it. B sides were often done very quickly I think, with little regard to playing or singing, that seems to be the case here. Or maybe it is just me...
Jorgen Ingman and The Shadows Apache. Perhaps it all comes down to which version you heard first.

Some great B sides in my collection:

"Reincarnation" by Roger Miller (flip side of "Chug-a-lug")
"Blistered" by Johnny Cash (written by Billy Edd Wheeler) Inexplicably the B side of "See Ruby fall".
John Hartford's lovely "Gentle on my mind" is the B side of Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman".
"Little bitty heart" by Claude King, B side of "Wolverton Mountain".
"I ain't gonna wash for a week" - Eddie Hodges, B side of "I'm gonna knock on your door".
"I guess I'm crazy" - Larry Cunningham (A side: "Don't make me go")

The 45 that I like the best is "Tell 'em off" by Onie Wheeler. Bought it used & scratchy, but I love it. Other favorites are "If I didn't have a dime" by Gene Pitney, and "A girl like you" by Cliff Richard.
Love "Bumble Boogie" by B Bumble & The Stingers too, but I haven't got the record. Great memories.

Hey, leeneia - I've got two more juicy takes on classical themes in my collection. I'm sure you'd love them... :-)

Take a listen to "Nut Rocker" by B. Bumble & The Stingers - great boogie piano playing and a miniature guitar solo to die for - the "Nutcracker Suit" in 1'59".

The other one, which was done by several guitar groups like the Surf Rats and the Jaguars - and the Cougars in the UK - was "Saturday Night At The Duckpond" - "Swan Lake" transmogrified!

All good, harmless stuff to boogie to with a beer - and brings a smile to the face.

Ah, leeneia, you've got to be male and a teenager and slightly daffy - which I was - to love the Piltdown Men! And, oddly enough, they were a bigger hit in the UK than the USA at the time.

There used to be a local DJ (died recently) called Rockin' Bill, who only spun platters from the 1950s - immensely popular with the old crowd - and he always ended his session with "Piltdown Rides Again". I believe that the guys from the Four Preps, who had the inspiration for the Piltdown Men sound, were in a studio which was next to another studio occupied by a concert orchestra - and they borrowed some of the musicians (horns, tympani) to play on the record.

Whether it's true or not, it's a good story - and a great joke on the "William Tell Overture"!

Sifting through my 45s doesn't take long, since I have only ever had one. When a Joni Mitchell recording of Urge For Going was impossible to find anywhere else, I learned it was on the flip side of her single, You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio, so I bought it.

I had a few 45's. One of my favorites was 'Trumpeter's Lullaby' by Leroy Anderson.

"Society's Child."

The B side song is, "Letter to Jon" which I think you can find on Youtube. If you want to hear it just type in "Letter to Jon"
Janis Ian.

It has kind of a bluesy feel to it.

What a great strong voice she had and only about 15 or 16 at the time.

I have over a thousand of them. I play them quite often, especially "b" sides. some great gems there. The Phil Spector group, The Teddy ears, had a huge hit with "To Know Him Is To Love Him. ", but the flip side, "Don,t you worry my little Pet" is great. The b side of Splish Splash by Bobby Darin , Judy Don,t Be Moody, is grand as well. Many other b sides are great as well, especially The Coasters! Any suggestions about the lesser known b sides?

I still got a rack of 45s too, mostly sixties and seventies pop and rock. Every now and then I play a few. There's something about the sound of slightly sctatchy vinyl !

My Dad's late 50s deluxe polished wooden cabinet radiogram was still his pride and joy, occupying a whole corner of the front room,
until he bought his first hi fi stereo separates in the early 70s...

It was either that or me and my sister's dansette, when I first started buying my own 45s around 1971ish...

... and we were still using that radiogram for playing 78s and scratched 2nd hand records until well into the 80s.....

Probably the same set of military grade british valves working reliably for a good quarter century...???

When I was a kid, I also used it to tune into police and emergency radio frequencies...

sat up all night once with a mate, monitoring a local shotgun murder.

I beg to differ, but The Shadows version outclasses all others to my ears, it's a tune made for "that sound" - Fender Strat/Meazzi echo/Vox or JMI AC15. All other versions sounded weedy!

I'd never heard the Jorgen Ingman version 'til now, oddly enough. Nice guitar playing although - it seems to me - a little more fussy and rigid than the Shadows' version. But then I'm probably so used to the Shads' version that any others sound not quite right. :-)

There's nothing quite like old vinyl for bringing back the memories, particularly when it's in the 45rpm format.

My parents bought a radiogram (an "Alba") back around 1957 or '58. It contained our first proper record player - 78, 45 and 33 speeds - so, naturally, I started to spend my weekly pocket money on singles. I still have them, and was going through them yesterday, out of curiosity.

The very first one was Lonnie Donegan's "Battle of New Orleans", to be followed by many more. They show definite trends as the years went by - guitar mainly at first, then a traditional jazz period, then blues, and so on. A selection of titles:

"Greenfields" - The Brothers Four
"Apache" - The Shadows
"Shazam" - Duane Eddy
"Piltdown Rides Again" - The Piltdown Men
"Move It" - Cliff Richard
"Smokestack Lightnin'" - Howling Wolf
"Because They're Young" - Duane Eddy
"On The Rebound" - Floyd Cramer
"Petite Fleur" - Chris Barber's Jazz Band
"Temptation" - The Everley Brothers
