Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ranger1 Date: 23 Feb 16 - 07:39 PM I'll have another youngster to add to the crew next month. Nineteen-year-old daughter of a co-worker not only knows who Stan Rogers is, but loves his music. |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Feb 16 - 05:42 PM It would be lovely to see her again. I hope she gets around to emailing me her mailing address. I'd like to give her a Tom's CD "A Bottle Full For the Shantyman" -- he was Bates Class of 1964. He missed his 50th class reunion which was held seven months after he died. But the CD (and photographs) were there. Linn |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Feb 16 - 05:38 PM Linn- You've done another great job listing the songs and the singers. The young woman from Bates College is Maddie Legro, and she may join us again next month. She also did a great job of taking photos with my camera. Charlie Ipcar |

Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Feb 16 - 07:12 PM Charlie has posted some great photos at Facebook and Nick has posted a slew of photos at The Folk Revival Facebook group page. Dianne, when I've got a minute, I'll email you some of them. Don, by the way, met us yesterday at the USS Constitution Museum in Boston (well, Charlestown) for the Boston Area Chantey and Maritime Sing to help represent the Press Room session (even though he had to drive NORTH to Boston rather than SOUTH from NH -- we weren't so much the New Hampshire contingent as the PRESS ROOM contingent. I've been playing catch up today since I had four sessions (and a sleep deficit) for the past five days. But here is the beginning, at least, of my report. The crew (not counting the kids from BU) were me, Hutch, Nick N., Dianne L., Don Hale (Don, you can email me for anyone's last name that you don't know), Charlie I. (Charley Noble -- no relation to Nick), Tami B. (Ranger1), Gail F., Nicole H., Maddie the music major from Bates College, Jim F., Mike M. (who brought the young crowd in), Jeff Warner, and Gail D. and her sister Janice and Gail's daughter listening. Oh, and Dave and Robin from whom Nick rented accommodations in Greenland (no, not THAT one -- New Hampshire). What we sang -- 1. Sailor's Prayer (Tom Lewis) - Linn (Bat Goddess) 2. Fall Down, Billy O'Shea - Hutch 3. Eddystoe Light - Nick & Don 4. Bye, Bye My Roseanna - Dianne 5. Fire Marengo - Charlie 6. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn 7. River Lea - Hutch 8. Farewell to Tarwaithie - Don 9. Stormalong, Stormy, Stormalong - Charlie 10. Isle au Haut - Dianne 11. Nine Times a Night - Linn 12. West Indies Blues - Hutch & Charlie 13. Bold Riley - Nick 14. Farewell to Nova Scotia - Nicole 15. Leave Her, Johnny - Don (that's once... ;-) ) 16. Bailey's Mistake - Charlie 17. Combing the Mane - Nick (from John Roberts' and Deb Cowan's new CD) 18. Old Zeb - Hutch 19. William Taylor - Gail F. 20. All For Me Grog - Dianne 21. Drink To the Men Who've Gone Ashore - Charlie 22. Pay Me My Money Down - Hutch 23. Oklahoma! - Dianne & Nick in honor of one of the college students who came in with Mike -- they're attending a retreat at the Sheraton; she was from Oklahoma. Others were from Georgia and San Francisco as well as Boston. 24. Rolling Home - Gail F. 25. Oh, Molasses - Nick (a bit of Boston history the BU kids probably hadn't heard) 26. Shawnie-Town - Hutch 27. Cannery Shed - Linn 28. Bonnie Bunch of Thyme - Dianne 29. Down Below (no, not THAT one) - Maddy from Bates 30. Hey Rain - Hutch 31. Natchez and Delta Queen Race - Charlie 32. Blackwater Bill (poem by Paul MacNeil, late of Newburyport's The Grog; currently living in the Philippines) - Linn 33. Out Along the Bay - Hutch (which he wrote) 34. Roseabella - Don 35. A Night at Dago Tom's (from the Masefield poem) - Charlie 36. Blow Ye Winds In the Morning - Nick 37. A Newfie's a Newfie Wherever He Goes - Mike M. (I'm not sure of the title) 38. Crossing the Bar - Jeff Warner 39. Clementine (but sung to a Welsh tune; in honor of the first song Tom sang in public at age 5) - Dianne 40. South Australia - Jim F. 41. Jolly Roving Tar (but not THAT one) - Nicole H. 42. Maggie May - Linn 43. All Through the Ale - Jeff Warner in memory of Roy Harris ___*__ Here Nick kept notes because I had to head to the Dave Surette & Susie Burke concert. Thanks, Nick! ___*___ 44.The Old She-Crab - Charlie 45.The Lobster (By the Wayside version) - Dianne 46. Pubic Hair (parody to tune of"Baby Face") - Dianne 47. Felim's Boat - Gail F. 48. Whale of a Tale - Nick 49. Yangtze River - Charlie 50. Where Am I To Go - Mike 51. Tinker, Tailor - Dianne 52. Seaman's Hymn (Nelson's Prayer) - Don and the company |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 22 Feb 16 - 02:58 PM Charley, the name of the song that I couldn't remember is "Shipmates". Perhaps you could dust it off and sing it, along with "Mariner's Compass", next time around. Thanks, Don |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ranger1 Date: 22 Feb 16 - 11:22 AM Dianne, he posted them on his facebook wall. |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 22 Feb 16 - 11:00 AM Hey Charlie, It was fun, wasn't it. Where did you post the photos? Dianne |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Feb 16 - 04:51 PM Linn- It was a really fun session, and I've missed the last two because of the Christmas madness and the January bad weather. I've just posted an album of photos that the Bates student Maddie was gracious enough to take for us. I do hope that Nick or someone else got a good photo of her singing as well. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Feb 16 - 09:32 AM Quite the session! From a camera-toting music major from Bates College (Tom's alma mater; he was Class of 1964) doing research to a door-blocking (I think that's what they were doing on the sidewalk in front of The Press Room) lively clutch of college students that Mike M. lured inside with the promise of sea songs. AND Nick Noble (of WICN's "The Folk Revival" fame). I doubt if I'll have time for my report today as several of us New Hampshuh types are heading to the Boston sea music sing at the Constitution museum this afternoon. And I have to get the last half hour's-worth of songs from Nick for the list. Later! Linn |

Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 20 Feb 16 - 12:35 PM There should be a few extra folks coming down from Maine today with me to join in with the session. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Feb 16 - 10:04 AM Good session last night -- looking forward to lots of good singing today. Nick Noble and I are crossing the bridge to Kittery earlier in the afternoon to say hi to Chris Vaughan who is still recuperating. Linn |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 19 Feb 16 - 08:52 AM I'm with Don. I'll be there, I am an adult. The rest is unknown. We will carry on though! Dianne |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Feb 16 - 08:14 PM Where is everyone? Good question, Don. Been wondering that myself. Ah, well -- I'm sure we'll have a quorum on Saturday. Linn |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 18 Feb 16 - 05:30 PM So, where is everyone? Am I a voice in the wilderness? I expect to be there. As for a "responsible adult", adult, probably. Responsible, not so sure...... Don |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Feb 16 - 08:18 AM S'pozed to be in the 50s on Saturday -- not exactly typical February weather! Linn |
Subject: RE: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Feb 16 - 01:09 PM Please leave a note or at least refresh if you check in here. Thanks! Linn |
Subject: February Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 Feb 16 - 03:59 PM The February Monthly Shanty, Forebitter, and Foc's'l Ballad Session will be happening this Saturday, February 20 at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. This frigid snap will have snapped back to the unseasonably warm weather -- it's predicted to be close to 50 degrees F. Accuweather says cloudy and mild with rain possible. But at 50 degrees, that's okay! We can sing winter sea songs anyway. Nick Noble intends to be at the Friday weekly trad session and at Saturday's shanty sing. I'll have to leave around 7 or 7:15 to see David Surette and Susie Burke at Red & Shorty's, but I'm certain there will be a responsible adult to keep the sing going until 7:30. See you there! Linn |
