Posessives are proving complex, that is on hold.

What I have been irritated by is Android (etc) popping up a soft keyboard every time you hit a button.

The solution is to reign back from modern cleverness and change all buttons to (tech alert) <TABLE>. So now Android (et al) doesn't then have to assume an "action" is an "input" as it were. (ie needing a keyboard).
The changes to the visible page was surprisingly transparent to my software. What a relief!

I may test it tomorrow with an Android Tablet, but the prognosis is good.

Do you mean to allow the user to type in an apostrophe? That seems like an unnecessary complication to me. I can type horse and it suggests horse's, which I can select.

I would actually loosen up the search. It someone types horse, or selects horse, I would implicitly include horses, horse's, and even horses'. If somebody is looking for memoires about horses they're likely to be interested in any of those.

Apart from the delimiters you allude to there are the complications around glyphs for the possessive apostrophe. horse's horse’s and horse‘s are all different, and which one is in the title may depend on who typed it and using what software.

It works and plays OK on Firefox/Android BTW.

Just done a major revamp of the JavaScript and the clips are up to 1050 now with 160 contributors. http://ask.stroudvoices.co.uk is the same, as is "search.stroudvoices.co.uk".
I have a plan to do one more wrinkle - to include possessives in the search, but it is proving elusive, without being too techie - JavaScript uses the ' (et al) for it's purposes which makes for complicated work-arounds.

Updated over the last week or so. With a bit more graphical (ie colour) prompts. And some niceties like tidying up #text - ie http://search.stroudvoices.co.uk#keith

FireFox 34 is the main testbed (yea! later version can't debug properly) BUT:

Chrome 40 was a problem because it is small & fast so doesn't ring all permutations. I had to be consistent in JavaScript! Fixed

IE 11 - basically threw its toys out of the pram because I copied across from Wordpress HTML (which always seems to work) and one item it didn't like. Fixed.

Opera 28 seems to like it.

Safari I personally can't test on properly because the obtainable version is 5 (v old) and it doesn't come with native debugging. Some niceties in Safari5 don't work, but at least it searches and mp3s play via Media Player on Win7

Anyone care to test on other browsers?

<NOSCRIPT> added (most users won't notice) and text at the bottom to alert the need for audio AddOns with older browsers. How to install AddOns is beyond the scope of the website.

FWIW I spent a lot of effort getting it to play MP3s on iPhones and Tabs (Android just did it), and making it responsive (as they say) to small screens.
If anyone wants to try on a Windows phone I would like some idea of "if it runs JavaScript well" and plays clips.

When I am happy with it it will also be used on my Wordpress pages of stroudvoices.co.uk where the old version still sits.

You must be using FireFox then OR a browser using the Gecko engine.

cresby.com should redirect to mister.red and what is says at the bottom is a direct write of the UserAgent. Puzling innit?. I can't find a surefire way to report what browser you have so I just output whatever it says.

As with many sites that offer sound, it needs a clear, definitive reminder of requirements & limitations... such as "javascript required" and suggestions about how to enable it.

My browser of choice for everyday use in an older version of Opera, but I have various privacy/security settings in it that do not allow all actions. Opera brings up the template and allows the search (I searched on 'green' on got several hits), but nothing happens when I hit 'play'.
I switched to PaleMoon, a Firefox fork, and things seemed to work ok. I do have 'some' security settings in PaleMoon, but it's hard to compare exactly what the differences are.

(But why on Cresby.com does it tell me that my browser is Netscape version 5?)

Stroud Voices Audio History it opens having searched for the song "Queen of the May" as the found item. But you can search on words - if they exist in the archive. courting is certainly there.

I have re-vamped the software for my Audio History Archive for the town I live in.

there were improvements needed and apostrophes were the focus of attention (techie JavaScript problem).

If there are problems, let me know how you made it fail, typing fast may fool it. Load times are not brilliant, the lexicon is 4500 words!
