Hey friends,

Im playing with a trio of multi-istrumentalists: guitar, fiddle, banjo, upright bass, accordion and vocals...we have a couple paying gigs and coming up and hope to get more.

Anyone have wisdom about what kind of single mic we need for the old time gather-round-the-mic set up?

I'm thinking we need a cardidoid condensor (non-multi-pattern)...does that sound right?

These are the top three I was thinking about since I don;t have unlimited funds:

Shure KSM32 http://www.shure.com/americas/products/microphones/ksm/ksm32-embossed-single-diaphragm-microphone

Audio Technica 4047

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

There is one mic that eclipses the mics you mentioned.

The Audix SCX-25A: SCX25A

When working with a mic like that, you'll also need a good EQ between your mixer and your amplifier. I'd recommend this DBX unit: AFS-2 (I'm using it's predecessor, the AFS-224)
Working without this and/or trying to use monitor speakers will ruin your sound.

For over 9 years now I've been using 2 or sometimes even 3 SCX-25As on stage and we couldn't be happier: HiFi sound quality and freedom to move. Two birds, one stone.
Soundchecks usually last 2 minutes.

How big a place are you playing in? You might not need a mic at all.
