Subject: RE: 50 years of the National Folk Festival From: Bruce D Date: 27 Feb 16 - 02:50 AM Hi there Sandra. Well my First National was Fremantle in 1978, Then Sydney in 1982 (I've still got the souvenir Calico Bag from that). Canberra in 1984, Then Sydney again in 1988 (I was on the orginial committee for that, before someone overrode the organizing committee). Maleny in 1989, Canberra in 1992 (Canberra Uni). and five or six (I've lost track) of festivals since 1998. Bruce |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the National Folk Festival From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 27 Feb 16 - 03:54 AM I have a photo somewhere of your 1982 bag - don't forget to bring it along with you sandra |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the National Folk Festival From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 27 Feb 16 - 05:23 AM I went to Sydney 1988, and I haven't missed one since they started having them in Canberra every year. |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the National Folk Festival From: Bruce D Date: 27 Feb 16 - 05:45 AM I've even got Cassette recordings of the 1978 workshops and some of the concerts, (obtain from WAFF), unluckly I don't have a working cassette player. Through I did try to digitize some of them a few years ago but the cassette deck was dying at the time and I did get any usable results. |

Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: JennieG Date: 29 Feb 16 - 03:54 PM I went to a few concerts at the 1982 festival, and the 1988 one......first one which I camped and spent the whole weekend at was 1996, I think. |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Bugsy Date: 29 Feb 16 - 10:34 PM I was lucky enough to be the first act on the first concert of the 1985 National in Perth, that was also the first performance of the Fo'c's'le Firkins. I'm happy to say that 7 of the original members, Including myself have recently reformed the group and are thoroughly enjoying our new incarnation. CHeers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 01 Mar 16 - 12:18 AM wow! do you have a current webpage? The Foc's'le Firkins, 1985 to ?? |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Hrothgar Date: 01 Mar 16 - 04:27 AM I have only been to 42 of them. First one was 1974 in Brisbane (and, yes, I do have the T-shirt). I suspect Danny Spooner has been to more than anybody else - might have been to all of them, in fact. |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Stewie Date: 01 Mar 16 - 05:12 AM Like Roger, my first one also was Brisbane 1974 at which we Top Enders presented a themed concert titled 'Blood, Crows and Gallows'. I was at perhaps a dozen others, but only one - 2002 - since it became fixed in Canberra. I was also at the second Brisbane one at which Bogle's 'Band Played Waltzing Matilda' was judged third in the songwriting competition to the amazement/horror of the crowd! --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Bruce D Date: 01 Mar 16 - 06:51 AM Bugsy are any of the Fo'c's'le Firkins coming to the National this year (Sandra its time to start your Thread) ? I've still got a couple of their cassettes and would love, to see them released in CD Format. I also used to Digger down on the STS Leeuwin, while I was living in Perth. Bruce D |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Andrez Date: 01 Mar 16 - 06:52 AM My first was Canberra 1972 and a few since then to boot :-) Cheers, Andrez |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Bugsy Date: 02 Mar 16 - 09:41 PM Answers to Firkin questions, No Sandra, we don't have a website, and the "Windjammers" webpage you Blicky'd were a couple of ex members, not the Firkins. Bruce, Digger is now living in Girvan in Scotland. He was not one of the original members of the Firkins. We don't have a CD out at the moment. It's still early days for our new incarnation. I don't know if any of the Remaining Original Firkins are going to the National. I suspect, not. The Members are (in alphabetical order); Peter Bugden (Yours Truly) Jonathon Cope Steve Cope Greg Hastings Tony Henry Peter(Murf) Murphy Paul Presbury Who knows, we may manage to get to the National in the future, IF we can get an application approved. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 03 Mar 16 - 12:28 AM good luck on future applications, it would be great to finally meet you. sandra |

Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Hrothgar Date: 03 Mar 16 - 03:45 AM First and second placegetters in that songwriting contest were (and I'm not sure of the correct order) the late Chris Nicholson and my very dear friend Anne Infante (who I hope will be at the National this year). I can't remember which of their songs were entered. |

Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Bruce D Date: 29 Mar 16 - 06:29 PM I went through the display of old Festival Posters that was on display, and worked out I had been to 15 Nationals since attending my first in 1978, with this year making my 16th Festival. No a bad record seeing from many of those, I've been deployed at sea, or lived at the opposite end of the country. Bruce D |

Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 01 Apr 16 - 01:18 AM I tried to win 2 double passes to NFF2017 for your own goodself & Mrs Bugsy in the big raffle, but alas, someone else got them, even tho the seller said they were winning tickets. Maybe she said that to everyone ... sandra |

Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Hrothgar Date: 02 Apr 16 - 06:24 PM And the best bit? On Monday evening we had an impromptu birthday party in the session bar. Also attending was a friend who had a stroke a few years ago and has had aphasia (difficulty in speaking is the simplest definition) since. When we sang the old Watersons/Coppers style songs, he sang with us. It was beautiful. |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Apr 16 - 09:57 PM a very memorable birthday party. my best bit? I'll be posting a few articles here sometime soon - when I sort all my photos! sandra |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: JennieG Date: 02 Apr 16 - 10:02 PM I heard the wonderful Monday night singing! |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: GUEST,Bill S from Adelaide Date: 02 Apr 16 - 10:34 PM I still wear my Alice 87 at NFF's, went there by train from Sydney. Sutherland in 88 was WET as I'm sure those there will remember especially those who were camping, we had 400 plus mm of rail at my place. Only festival to offer white water rafting inside your tent. And Campbell would be high on the list of attendances |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 03 Apr 16 - 03:38 AM Yes, I remember Sutherland 88. That whole year was wet in Sydney. I remember trying to get a weekend out of the rain by driving to Dubbo – and it was raining there, too! After that, I didn't go again until about 1996, but since 1996 I don't think I've missed any. |
Subject: RE: 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival From: Bruce from Bathurst Date: 03 Apr 16 - 08:18 AM This exercise became a diary of my adult life. National Folk Festivals were (and remain) a high priority, starting in 1972. 1972 to 1977 - Uni and early working years. Such freedom! I attended all these Nationals. 1978 to 1981 - Saving for a house, so no spare money. Missed these years. 1982 - Sydney is my home town, so this was an easy one. 1983 - We were travelling o/s so we missed the National. 1984 to 1988 - Our son came to five Nationals before he turned six. 1989 to 1991 - The day job ruled my life and I missed these years. 1992 to 2016 - Every one, folks. Every one. That makes 37 Nationals so far ... and I'm loving it. Bruce |
