That would be great! There have been various "folk bus trips" aroind Perthshire and Aberdeenshire, singing songs in their geographical locations: not managed to do one yet.

Thanks for that Tattie. A lot of us Irish people don't explore our neighboring isle enough. Your description even has a poetic flow to it. I hope at some stage to walk along the banks where the Noran Water flows singing Inglesmadie Annie ....

Ok, a bit more geography then:
Noran Water
A river of Angus that rises in headstreams in the southern Grampians, the Noran Water flows southwards to the valley of Strathmore through Glen Ogil in the Braes of Angus, forming a reservoir in the glen and a cascade at the Falls of Drumly Harry. It turns southeast at the Den of Ogil and flows on to meet River South Esk west of Brechin.

So the real Annie was from Inglesmadie near Fettercairn. In searches I came across a registering of a man's tractor in "The Plains, Inglesmadie,Laurencekirk" 04-Apr-1961 !

Definitely "adapted"! The original poem "Shy Geordie" was by Helen Cruickshank and tune set to it by the late Jim Reid, describing the plight of Inglesmadie Annie, who lived "Up the Noran Water" near in Inglesmadie near Fettercairn in Scotland. Yes, do read the "show more" under the YouTube posted by Guest #.
This is not to decry other versions, but hopefully just set the record straight!

There is a recording by Luke Cheevers available HERE. It is a live recording from a Góilín session and was put online as part of Irish Traditional Music Archives An Góílín microsite. Great resource for hundreds of songs and dozens of singers.

Len Graham and Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin adaptation of Helen Cruickshank's poem with additional verse by Luke Cheevers was recorded by Luke and is available on his recent CD 'Only Me Saggin' Shelf', copies of which can be obtained from An Góilín or Claddagh Records.
