The venues are now pretty well established for the first and third Sundays in the month as follows:

1st Sunday is Fernandes Tap from around 1.30pm ~ upstairs, plenty of room for audience and singers and players of all abilities ~ finishes often after 5pm ~ beware of early Wakefield Wildcats crowd on home matches ~ [usually out by 2pm! ~]

3rd Sunday ~ Bull and Fairhouse ~ not far from Fernandes, same usual crowd by and large start 1.30pm ish, no rugby league ppl normally

Please forget the previous thread on "Change of Wakefield" sessions

Many thanks to all the musicians, singers and followers who attended the first meeting at this new venue.I cannot recall any session being so well attended in the past . In many ways we were the victims of our own success as too many people were unable to fit comfortably in the space provided. The large numbers of the general listening public also added to the logistical problems. Musicians were 'spread ' rather than being in close proximity to each other. The pub was also somewhat noisy due to its popularity. The net result was that many fine individual singers could not be heard or were reluctant to sing at all against the general noise...apologies to them. The pub itself has a great atmosphere, staff and beer and we were made very welcome. It was impossible to predict the incredible response and level of support which we received . In time , the sessions may well prove to be less popular and the venue and session will be more manageable. We propose continuing with subsequent sessions at the Star and the next will be on the 19th Feb at around 3 p.m.. There cannot be too many folk sessions which have suffered due to ,almost, too many attending....a relatively happy position. Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,

DAVID

Yes as Mr Nuttall says singers supporters and musicians turned up from miles around ~ a lot of talent to draw from and to support live music

The first afternoon session was a bit problematic and we do need to ensure that the pub appreciate us and that customers are aware of the nature of the acoustic largely traditional tunes and songs which we sing and play

Third (3rd) Sunday afternoon in the month from 3pm ish

Looking forward to February 2017

I appreciate the efforts you have made to keep this session going, Dave, and indeed your loyalty to local live folk music which knows no bounds.
You did a fantastic job in finding a replacement venue at such short notice.
I appreciate there will be pros and cons to any venue. And the first of any series of events will never be typical of the ensuing weeks.
But sad to say I have to agree with comments made so far.
Having made the effort to attend on Sunday last, I came away with a headache, and much less than satisfied. It may have been a victim of its own success, but in the event it proved impossible to perform anything but the rowdiest and most "populist" of material. The wonderfully inclusive and genuinely supportive spirit of the erstwhile Bull & Fairhouse sessions was being sacrificed in favour of some individuals repeatedly "grandstanding", almost for the locals' benefit it seemed.
More seriously IMHO, the acoustics were less than ideal, and some singers could hardly be heard even from a short distance away, whereas (as you rightly say) many good singers didn't even get heard at all or didn't feel able to chance a turn. And yes, everyone was far too spread out to enable the usual "dive-in" principle to succeed.
I'm really not sure whether it's going to be worth my attending again, as I have to travel some distance and time is tight when I have another commitment on the evening of the third-Sunday each month anyway. That would be a shame, since I've enjoyed supporting the session for the past few years.
Hope my feedback is of some use.

David , Thank you for your observations...the majority of the points you make about the session are already realised and are well documented here and on other social media. I am sorry we may not see you at the sessions in the future. You may have missed much during the time you were sleeping !! I have spoken to others who still seems to think it has potential and is worth persevering there . I would, however , take serious issue with a couple of points you make. I believe the 'populist' material to which you refer may have been chosen because it may have helped to involve the spectators ...many of whom may have been new to this type of live music. I concede that, by its very purpose and nature , it needed to be louder and more expansive than that which we would normally play or sing on a regular basis . Your comment that there were ' individuals repeatedly grandstanding almost for the locals' benefit 'is unfair as they tried to keep things moving along...NOT to hog the limelight but with more popular offerings to involve more people through tunes and chorus songs ...their contributions were , therefore , much appreciated .The pub was, as you say rather noisy and I hope this will even out over time. Thank you for recognising my intentions and efforts to try to keep Folk Music live in the area.

Like all first times this session had it's teething troubles. The audience was amazing and still there listening when I left, most of then standing up. I have supported Dave's mixed sessions for quite a few years now, never miss without good reason. I know he works hard to give us the best in local music. This new venue IMHO is actually better than the Bull & Fairhouse which had a pillar that cut the singers/players into two parts. I am sure the problems will sort themselves out as people get to know the venue and the novelty wears off for the none folkie locals. I shall definitely be back next month. Well done David.

Yes many points made are in fact correct ~ we cannot take venues and

audiences for granted ~ indeed many professional singers do that all

the time btw ~

it is hard work to create the ideal venue from scratch and pubs as we

know are hard to find particularly for Sunday pm with lunches being

popular and new pubs and landlords need to be informed as well as the

regular customers as to what the norm is for such gatherings

A difficult match at Stoke but let's hope we can capitalise on the Liverpool result and get three points. This time last year I'd be hoping for a draw, now I'm realistically looking for a win.
