I am double-jabbed, and very keen to return to these wonderful sessions. It has been a long and lonely time...
All credit to David N for getting them going again.
However, being in the "vulnerable" and "compromised immune system" category, I personally still do not and cannot feel safe in any similarly confined space, especially one which is likely to be patronised by the obstinately unjabbed minority. Let alone using "the facilities", however assiduous and covid-compliant the management of the premises will undoubtedly be. Not to mention the form-filling, bureaucratic test-and-trace, trick-or-treat rigmaroles and (still highly discomforting but necessary) mask-wearing. Too much risk after a stressful 40-mile car journey methinks... sorry folks, but you won't be seeing me for awhile yet. Enjoy yourselves!

On Sunday 1st August we are due to recommence our free informal singing and musicians sessions at the Polka Hop pub in Wakefield. The music takes place from informally placed tables and chairs in the pub....no stage.
Following the latest easing of Covid restrictions I still have misgivings about the safety of participants and audience as I believe the restrictions are being lifted too soon . Social distancing , the wearing of masks and the advisability of singing in public are legally allowed. I simply wondered what the views are of others...organisers, bar owners and staff, singers, instrumentalists and audience . Will your sessions be starting up again immediately or later or not at all ? Do you propose continuing with any or all of the previous restrictions ? Have you any other views and observations ? I feel sure we would all wish to see the start up of live music but it must be in a climate which ensures the health and safety of all. Thankyou

David

I said from the outset that it is a fine balance between "opening up" and dampening down ~ many will die and many businesses will fail

Pleased that many professional folk acts have gone for "online" but that does nothing for the other vast numbers of performers who are doing nowt

The debate surrounding the decision to continue or remove Covid Restrictions will continue for a very long time. I am of the opinion that a premature return to 'normality' could undermine all the measures and sacrifices made previously by so many . To wait a while longer could only be for the good in spite of the hardship caused to individuals .their livelihoods and way of life . Health and safety are more important than expedient measures taken now. We enjoy our live music but it's delay in commencing is a small price to pay in these unfortunate times. Mr.Johnson said that he wanted the restrictions to be the very final ones with no return to the previous status quo....let us hope so but time will tell.

David.

So should visitors to Whitby in August stay at home? Time will tell and when do you two reckon we will return to normal?

There is a terrific ground swell of people who are looking for a return to normal

Ray

We will never see in our life time see a nil return on Covid, vaccinations will continue, people will be infected, people will die I think that is inevitable ~ life must go on

With the current upturn in Covid cases in the UK (over 90,000 cases in the past week) I can see another lock-down being in place before the end of the summer.

I thought that the idea was that restrictions were to ne lifted July 19th and that meant that singing together and basic association could then return to normal?

We strictly speaking have not been able to return to folk club style singing during this shut down

August 1st and 8th should permit this without facial shields unless some drastic events prevents it

We have to return to normal sometime and hopefully a good percentage will have grabbed a jab

This is the first (planned) resumed session I have heard of. I suppose you know that a greater physical distance is advised when people are singing than when they are speaking. Some people say singers should wear visors.

We have previously used Fernandes Brewery Tap Pub in Wakefield , West Yorkshire , for our singing and instruments sessions on the First Sunday of each month prior to the lock down restrictions. We have now been notified that the pub is to undergo major structural work and will no longer be available to us for the foreseeable future. We will now meet on the First and Third Sunday of each month at 1.30 pm. at the Polka Hop pub in Wakefield. There is free parking close by. Our first sessions will be on the 1st and 15 th August 2021 at 1.30 pm . We look forward to welcoming singers, instrumentalists and audience at these free and informal sessions. All are very welcome.....old and new. Thank you to the Polka Hop for their support and to Fernandes Brewery Tap for all of their previous hospitality. Best Wishes.

Thanks Dennis for the advice and information. I didn't go last Sunday since I'd not heard one way or the other.

Strangely, I am on David's mailing list but had not received anything!

Haven't heard of you for ages, so now glad to see you're alive and well.

I believe everyone we know on the folk scene is deemed "at risk" in one category or other, so the future does indeed look very bleak for us all. keep safe and take good care..

Hi All. For those not on Davids mailing list, the Folk Sessions at Polka Hop and Fernandes Tap have been cancelled until Further notice due to the Coronavirus situation.
Good luck to all, in particular to those who, like me, that are more "at risk!".
All being well I will let you know when the Sessions recommence.

It was good to welcome old and new friends to our popular Sunday afternoon tunes and songs session at Fernandes Tap pub in Wakefield ( first Sunday of each month at 1 pm.) on 1st. September. Without wishing to exaggerate , I think it would be hard to find such a multi - talented gathering of singers and musicians ...well attended, good atmosphere, huge choice of real ales and other beverages plus excellent music. All are always very welcome and I would urge you to come along. We also meet at 1pm on the third Sunday of each month at the Polka Hop pub in Wakefield.
It was also good to meet up with many of our Wakefield attendees and others at the informal fringe gatherings in the Black Horse at Whitby during Folk week....always good to meet up with old and new friends . Thanks to Sue and her staff for offering such a warm welcome . .

At present the Folk Music sessions held on the THIRD SUNDAY of each month usually meet at the Grey Horse in Wakefield. Will you please note that we have changed the venue to the newly named POLKA HOP pub in Wakefield ( previously known as THE BULL AND FAIRHOUSE ) .
These sessions commence at around 1 pm on the third Sunday of each month at the new venue to begin on Sunday 21st October. Please inform any other interested parties and we look forward to seeing you. These arrangements do not affect the session arrangements for the first Sunday in each month at Fernandes Tap pub. May I thank Doug , the landlord , and his staff of the Grey Horse for all their hard work and hospitality on our behalf.
