Subject: Jean Redpath: Help to identify this song
From: GUEST,Pete Heywood

I'm listening to a lovely live recording I have of Jean Redpath from 2002 and this song popped out. Does anyone know the song and the writer? Here are some of the words.

Auld Ayr, the wind has heard your music
Its heard the sangs, your seabirds sing
Its heard the chants of Roman Legions
And themes of hope your kirk bells ring

Auld Ayr, the wind has aye been singing
defiant songs that Wallace sang
Your Covenanters sounds of glory
That o'er the strife to Heaven rang

I'm beginning to think that Jean wrote it. Although not known as a song writer, I know for a fact that she did write one shortly before she died. She normally credits her sources, but she sang this song without any comment in a concert in the town of Ayr.

Not normally known as a songwriter, but you might be interested to hear, on the Tobar an Dualchais website, a recording of one of Jean Redpath's own compositions entitled 'The Strange Wild Cry of Homeless Things.'

The song title isn't on the CD. It is a recording of a live concert at a Festival / Summer School which I organised so no notes and, sadly, no Jean Redpath to ask.

Hi Pete,
I'll ask Tim Neat if he has any knowledge of this song--- was at his recent book (The Day of the Mountain) launch in Edinburgh.

He knew Jean well, made the Tree of Liberty documentary / film about her, Serge and Esther Hovey, The Songs of Robert Burns project.

- Please let me know if you discover more!

A
