Subject: Forsaken Love From: GUEST,Bob Schwarer Date: 25 Mar 16 - 10:24 AM About 30 years ago when I was still unretired I taped a local music program so I could listen to it during my commute. I was listening to one earlier this week and ran across a song I did not remember. With a little research I found the title, lyrics and some recordings, but not the one on my tape. It's an old Carter Family tune recorded by them and also Flatt and Scruggs. Forsaken Love They stood in the moonlight beside the gate Goodbye my darling I know you'll wait He sees her weeping and smile through her tears Saying I've been true love through these long years For on tomorrow at the break of day He was to journey far far away He held her closer his promised bride And to her questions these words replied I've loved you always yes I've been true My heart shall ever beloved for you O darling believe me far over the sea Through life or death so faithful I'll be One year past by he's coming home His pilgrimage over no longer to roam And smiling he thinks of her shinning eyes Shinning with welcoming glad surprise A dandy letter he takes from his breast To which his extended lips were pressed And reading once more by the warming light These words he had spoken to her that night Once more he seeks the old garden gate But he rides a land alas it's too late The wedding is over the knot is tied He finds his darling another's bride And later they found him there on the grass A pistol near by tells what had passed A crop of letters that explained the deed And in the pale moonlight these words did read Author: na Version: Carter Family Discography: Not Available It can be found on Youtube, but here's a link from The ToneWay Project: http://toneway.com/audio/song-clips/forsaken-love.mp3 My question is "Who recorded it besides the Carter Family and Flatt and Scruggs?" I found a guitar rendition with no vocals, but then hit a dead end. Maybe someone on this list knows of another recording. Oh, a female voice. by the way.. |

Subject: RE: Forsaken love From: GUEST Date: 29 Mar 16 - 12:57 PM I finally got my old tape out and converted that song to an MP3, but I don't know any way to post it here. I can email it to anyone who wants to try to identify the female singer. It seems to be from a live performance. |

Subject: RE: Carter Family'Forsaken Love'-who else recorded it? From: GUEST Date: 30 Mar 16 - 01:55 AM According to something I read, the song is sometimes known as 'I Will Love Thee Always.' I don't know if that will help things or confuse them. |

Subject: RE: Carter Family'Forsaken Love'-who else recorded it? From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 30 Mar 16 - 03:06 AM Songs with the title "Broken Hearted Lover" were recorded by the Carter Family in 1932, this recording appeared on a Victor 78, and in 1935, this latter recording appearing on quite a few different 78's. The Carolina Buddies recorded it in 1931 for Columbia. Ernest Stoneman's version was recorded in 1928, for Victor, and the Delmore Brothers cut it for Decca in 1940. There was also a recording by Cal Davenport for Vocalion in 1929. It could well be that these recordings are for different, though similarly titled, songs. Further details may be found in Tony Russell's invaluable book "Country Music Records. A Discography 1921 - 1942." Published by Oxford University Press, 2004. |

Subject: RE: Carter Family'Forsaken Love'-who else recorded it? From: GUEST Date: 30 Mar 16 - 01:59 PM You may be right, Hootenanny. I poked around a bit ant found a reference to the song on Rounder Records, Rounder 0143. Record by Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper I finally hit a site that had the track list and "Forsaken Love" is on it. I'm pretty sure now that is what I have been searching for. Thanks for your talented ear. |
