Yes there are quite a few recordings about, but I find it very difficult to learn new tunes without the dots!

Can you find me a recording without so many trills and ornaments as the one I linked above? I'll take a stab at making a MIDI.

It's no go.

When I googled "deas an oileain" alone, I got more hits. Here's a nice version, but unfortunately, when I play it, Soundcloud turns the MIDI off in my Noteworthy Composer.

I hate that!

But have a listen:

Try sounding it out. It's in the key of D, the first note is D, it goes stepwise up to F#, drops to low A, goes stepwise back to D, then jumps to high D.   See if this doesn't get you going.

The first two notes, low D and E, are probably pick-up notes.

The lyrics (found here ) to the song:

Ar chuala sibh cuntas ar Bheauty deas an Oileáin?
Do tháinig sí chugainn go cumtha ó Bhaile an Chaisleáin,
Do tharraing sí clú le criú maith fear ar an dtráigh,
Is do bheirim na comha gur le siúl a thógann sí an rás.

Do bheirimse clú do Bheauty deas an Oileáin,
Do thairrig sí siúd an duais is mithid a fháil
Mar níl sé sa domhan i bpower a molta níos fearr,
Mar níor cuireadh a rogha ar an bpoll ó deineadh an Áirc.

Is d'fhágadar fúmsa an Beauty a chur ins an ghréin,
Is cuirfidh mé in iúl don ndúthaigh go ndéanfaidh mé é,
Mar do dhúblódh sí siúl le colúr a scinnfeadh ó philéar,
Is mar bharr ar a ndúrt a criú go dtuga sí saor.

Do tháinig na brútaigh chugainn in aistear thar Mám,
Do bhíodar ag treabhadh nó gur thógadar fear ins gach áit,
Nuair a scaoileadh sa tsiúl iad i gcúrsaí fada na trá,
Do bhíodar tráthnóna chomh tuirseach is a bheadh marbh ar chlár.

Is tar éis a bhfuil ráite, níl sásamh ar m'aigne fós,
Nó go gcroithfidh siad lámh liom á rá gur sin achainí a gheobhad,
Nuair a thiocfaidh an bás is gan cairde agamsa níos mó,
Go dtabharfar mo chnámha thar sáile marbh nó beo.

More extensive set of lyrics (found here )

Ar gcualabhair cuntas ar Bheauty deas an Oileáin,
Do tháinig sí chugainn go cúmtha ó Bhaile 'n Chaisleáin,
Do tharraing sí cliú le criú mhaith fhear ar an dtráig,
Is go ndeirim gan chumha gur le lúth sea do thógadh sí an rás.

Do tháinig na Brútaigh chugainn i d'aistear thar Mám,
Agus dheineadar criú, is iad siúd do priocadh as gach áit,
Nuair a chuadar sa tsiúl i gcúrsa fada na trá,
Ba chosúil le búgail an mhúchadh bhí ag fhoireann na mbád.

Nuair a chonacsa chugam mo Bheauty is i teacht orm ón áth,
Is iad ag iomar' go gleoite i gcomhtharrac lena dhá láimh,
Níor bhogas mo shúil don gcriú ná go bhfaighidís an lá,
Mar do bhí fear ins an oinsigh ag cúl fad a bhí an triúr eile ag sáthadh.

Ní ar log na nGeann sea do deineadh sinne a thraenáil,
Ná ar na hoileánaibh rua atá thuaidh fé bhun Imileá,
Ach ar fharraigí fiaine go dtéann dos na lachain a shnámh,
Is nár mhagúil é a dtuairim, go mbuafaidís orainne an lá.

D' fhágadar fúmsa mo Bheauty do chur insan ngréin,
Geallaim don saol go léir ach go ndéanfadsa é.
Dhúblódh sí siúl le colúr do sceitheadh ón bpiléar,
Is mar bharr ar a dúirt a criú sea do thabharfadh sí saor.

A Hairtín an ghrinn ó guím ort go minic sa ló,
Gura fada go dté do ghéaga geala fén bhfód,
Dá ngeobhfá chun mo thí-sa, bhéarfainn im duit, bainne, agus feoil,
Is le caitheamh tréis bídh, gheobhfá fíon daor dearg le n-ól.

A Hairtín, fáinne óir ar gach orlach do bharrthaí de mhéar,
A mhic na n-dea-mháthar nár cáineadh, is nach b'fhéadfaí riamh é;
Tá siad dá rá gur tú máistir tofa na saor,
Mo charaid do lámh dheis, 'sí sás í is í ag déanamh na naomh.

Mo chreach is mo chás is nár ránas sa Daingean led linn
Do chroithinn do láimh le grá is le omós óm' chroí
Do bheadh cuileachta ghrámhar thar barr ag family a' tí.
Is ní thriomódh an clár nó go dtráfaimis barraille dí.

A song from the Blaskets; here's a teenager from Dingle, Cáit Ní Ainifín, carefully transcribing the lyrics received from weaver Pádraig Ó Curráin; can't see any date but most of the schoolbooks in the Dúchas collection were collected in the 1920s or 1930s, I think.
