I have been asked for the words of a song called Goin Back which starts "I think I'm going back to the days I knew so well in my youth." Recently recorded by The Pretenders, but was it a Matthews Southern Comfort song or Gram Parsons

There are several recordings of this song on YouTube:

GOIN' BACK
(Gerry Goffin, Carole King)

I think I'm goin' back
To the things I learned so well in my youth.
I think I'm returning to
Those days when I was young enough to know the truth.
Now there are no games
To only pass the time,
No more electric trains,
No more trees to climb.
Thinking young and growing older is no sin,
And I can play the game of life to win.

I can recall a time
When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend.
Now I think I've got
A lot more than just my toys to lend.
Now there's more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide,
But every day can be
My magic carpet ride.
A little bit of courage is all we lack,
So catch me if you can; I'm goin' back.

A little bit of courage is all we lack,
So catch me if you can; I'm goin' back.

[Recorded by The Byrds, Goldie, Carole King, Nils Lofgren, The New Seekers, Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, and many others.]

Bravo, Jim Dixon. Nothing to add, apart from debating whether The Byrds version is better than Dusty's...

Dusty Springfield tears at your heart when singing this. It was also played at her funeral. Such deep reaching lyrics that show nostalgia is not gone. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful in issuing the words. One of the all time best songs ever... ever! IMHO

"Thinking young and growing older is no sin,
And I can play the game of life to win...."

ditto that
