Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Harry Rivers Date: 03 Apr 16 - 04:30 AM Thanks for all the input above. I haven't tried the fluid soundfont yet. I started with 32MbGMStereo, which was quite limited, and then moved on to Arachno, which has a good selection of instruments. However, the best so far is the "Concertina" that Jim sent me: two beautiful concertinas together with the warmest accordion sample I've come across. This should meet my needs. I know that practicing along to MIDI files does bugger-all for learning the "groove" of a tune but I'm finding that it really helps with intonation. Once again, many thanks for your help. Harry |

I've just checked amd mine offers the same. I hadn't spotted the difference between gs and gm. When I changed to Linux a few years ago I chose Mint Cinnamon because it seemed the closest to XP of all the ones I tried. There are allegedly lighter and faster systems but I got to know my way round this one nicely. Whichever one you choose, join the forum. The help is brilliant. |
Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: punkfolkrocker Date: 02 Apr 16 - 10:25 AM Timely thread - cheers... Last year I installed AV linux on an old Pentium 4 PC to try out of interest, but 1st impressions left me unimpressed. ... and it faded into dust gathering mode... But yesterday I started considering trying out Mint or something similar, because I want an easy work horse [ expendable ] PC for investigating the contents of various hard drives left by a deceased relative... |

This means you can't sustain one note whilst playing several others. I can't remember how many voices Sibelius can do. I know it can do at least four. Have you found 'fluid soundfont-gs' yet? |
Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Harry Rivers Date: 02 Apr 16 - 06:52 AM I just tried it and, in Sibelius, 'harmonica' sounds closer to a 'concertina' than 'accordian' - still a little too 'staccato' though. Still keen to explore what LMMS can do with a decent GMS. Thanks!!! |
Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Jack Campin Date: 02 Apr 16 - 06:42 AM Phil Taylor's (discontinued) Barfly ABC processor for the Mac comes with a baritone concertina soundfont (sampled from his own instrument). I don't know where you can download it, but send me a PM and I'll email it to you. |
Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Stanron Date: 02 Apr 16 - 06:22 AM For creating scores I now use a program called MuseScore. It doesn't have a concertina sound but it does have Harmonica. Harmonica reeds and concertina reeds are pretty much the same. Have you tried writing concertina parts to a harmonica voice? |
Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Harry Rivers Date: 02 Apr 16 - 05:48 AM Thanks for your reply, Stanron. I've been using LMMS for a couple of weeks, mainly for inputting MIDI files to use as backing for my fiddle practice. I use Sibelius a lot and find its in-built piano sound quite adequate but I'm trying to find a way to get an authentic concertina accompaniment. Harry |
Subject: RE: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Stanron Date: 02 Apr 16 - 05:34 AM My Software Manager (for Linux Mint 17.3) offers LMMS version 1.0.0 and separately offers 'fluid soundfont-gs'. Both free and both safe to download. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu. Different operating systems may offer different software. I've not used either so I can't say what they are like. |
Subject: Info: LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio From: Harry Rivers Date: 02 Apr 16 - 04:46 AM Does anyone on here use LMMS - Linux Multi Media Studio? If so, can you recommend a (preferably free) General Midi Soundfont? All the best Harry |
