Subject: Tech: Dying Nook From: Penny S. Date: 14 Apr 16 - 06:24 AM I have a Nook ereader, bought because it wasn't Amazon. Now Barnes and Noble are pulling out from the UK. I had thought, no problem, I can still borrow ebooks from the library, buy from Waterstones, or stick pdfs on it from other sources. I've put all my folk song repertoire which I used to have on my Palm Pilot on it. But earlier this week, someone on the radio said that from mid-May, the thing will turn into a lump of flint, and be totally useless. Is this true? And, if so, why are they allowed to do this? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Will Fly Date: 14 Apr 16 - 07:19 AM I gather there's going to be some sort of deal whereby Nook software gets taken over by Sainsbury's. Worth a check, perhaps. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Stanron Date: 14 Apr 16 - 08:19 AM My guess is that you have no cause to worry. The device will continue to work as an E reader even if B&N withdraw from the UK. You will still have Wi-Fi although you might have to get a new service provider. Also, if it has a USB or mini USB socket you can access it through your PC. After a quick browse through Ebay I might get one myself. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Penny S. Date: 14 Apr 16 - 01:05 PM I've done the transfer with Sainsburys, though not tried it out yet. I use Adobe Digital Editions to communicate with it via the mini USB socket. (Someone was complaining about this necessity on a website - very first world problem.) Also through the filing system - it just works like an external hard drive. Why the radio reporter was going on about it dying, I don't know. I just won't be able to download directly from B&N. The wifi isn't connecting anywhere. But it certainly isn't dead. Yet. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Penny S. Date: 14 Apr 16 - 01:14 PM Forgot to say thanks. I had got in panic mode! And it looks as though things I had archived are still available. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 16 Apr 19 - 11:47 AM I've seen one of these going cheap. Does it work okay for displaying sheet music? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Reinhard Date: 16 Apr 19 - 12:03 PM When I read the title "Dying Nook" I wondered what kind of rare creature a nook is and why would someone lament its passing... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: GUEST,Modette Date: 16 Apr 19 - 12:12 PM It's a close relative of the cranny. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Apr 19 - 10:57 PM Well, actually, it's a Samsung tablet that's been altered to be tied to Barnes & Noble. It would be nice if Barnes & Noble would "unlock" your device before they abandon it. I have a Samsung tablet and like it very much. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: DaveRo Date: 25 Apr 19 - 02:08 AM It can probably be unlocked ('rooted'). If it can be done xda-developers will have instructions. It's tricky though. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: Mr Red Date: 25 Apr 19 - 02:52 AM If in doubt ask around the back street phone shops - if B&N are the problem someone will be figuring there is money to be made. But pick someone who knows what you are asking. AND back-up your archive first. And check out the Project Gutenberg via your PC. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Dying Nook From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 25 Apr 19 - 06:50 AM So, nobody used one for displaying sheet music? Or their own PDFs, of any kind? |
