Subject: sound and distance From: Jack Campin Date: 20 Apr 16 - 09:05 AM This is an intriguing idea. The sound of words encodes the distance of what they refer to: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/04/160418145453.htm Works for adverbs of location like "near" and "far" in English, also for "pres" and "lointain" in French. Doesn't work too well in German and not at all in Turkish (where all such adverbs seem to use back vowels). But it does suggest that the sounds of poetry and song are maybe not as arbitrarily related to the meaning as you might expect. |
