Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: MMario Date: 14 Dec 99 - 04:49 PM Caitrin...feel free to teleport us to your new location anytime.....(after about 100 posts, the threads get kinda hard to load)...an appropriate action for you and your icy legions, I would say... |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 14 Dec 99 - 04:43 PM Ha! You shall never defeat me! I am INVINCIBLE!!!! The world trembles at the mention of the Snow General Caitrin's name! Her victories are the stuff of legend! Her armies follow her as the legions did Caesar! Those who stand against Snow General Caitrin are DOOMED!!! *feels splat on head* Rats. I'd better get building. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 13 Dec 99 - 11:56 PM Teach me howl to throw right, Susan! The first and last time I threw a snowball was January 1992! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Susan A-R Date: 13 Dec 99 - 11:14 PM I have a big thermos jug of hot spiced wine, and am ready to roll. Now no ice in those snow balls children. Let's start a nice big pile of snow, pack it down a bit, and build it up so we have something solid to do our construction from. Ah, this is perfect packing snow, as we call it, just wet enough to hold together, but not too heavy to move around easily. See, you can roll nice big fort blocks like this. Now I am not picking sides. I'm just travelling back and forth as a consultant, and if I get hit by a snowball, just remember that, legally blind or not, I've been winghing these things for a LOONG time, and I can aim.

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 13 Dec 99 - 11:13 PM Arise! Arise! My army! No one dares to attack Marechal Mbo, The Icicle of Doom! His fort is impenetrable! His moat is uncrossable! His ice chevaux-de-frixe and sheer walls cannot be negotiated! His army hurls snowballs with frightening accuracy! Do you hear the his Imperial Minstrels blaring out his piobaireachd--his war note--as he runs back and forth, encouraging his fighters with fiery words, spurring them to complete and total VICTORY?! **feels splat on head** Blast the Snow General Caitrin! That was my favorite merry chapeau! Fag an bealach & full speed ahead! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 13 Dec 99 - 08:29 PM Oh, the weather outside is frightful...so let's go build something!!! Mbo, if you're going to build a snow fort, you need an opposing army. So, I'm volunteering myself as Snow General Caitrin! My icy arsenal will destroy you! *evil laugh* |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 13 Dec 99 - 06:24 PM Sounds great, Allan. So do you want to go and try to build one? Can I interest the musicians and beverage purveyors to join us? Think...The Mudcat Igloo! Anyone got any Winter-y tunes, like The Snowy Path to keep us warm while we build. My >>ahem<< extensive experience with Lincoln logs and Legos should help in designing it. Let's go over the blueprints first. Should there be a moat, a snowball stockpile, a lookout tower? --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 13 Dec 99 - 05:13 PM I just got a brilliant idea for a new version of the Tavern. So when people decide this one has gotten too long or we're ready for change of pace, somebody please tell me so I can try it! *continues to munch on cornbread before taking another whirl on the dance floor* |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 13 Dec 99 - 10:00 AM Mbo, above the high pasture, near the crest, is a place where the snow has drifted to depths of four and five feet. That might be a great place to attempt an igloo or a snow cave. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: MMario Date: 13 Dec 99 - 09:47 AM It's nice to be back at the MudCat...Spent Saturday night in a barn at a Christmas party, but, gotta sayit, the people here are MUCH nicer. Though the barn I was in DID remind me of Mudcat...lovely horses and friendly cats and kittens on the ground floor, HUGE indoor ring, then up the stairs it was decorated with a dozen christmas trees, lights, pointsettias, and MARVELOUS food....about 350 people there....(this is no small barn...the room dinner was serrved in used to be an indoor tennis court....the floorboards are up to 4 feet wide and are single planks....) |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 13 Dec 99 - 09:29 AM I think I need to head up to the high pasture. I've always wanted to build a snow fort. --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 13 Dec 99 - 07:53 AM Susan A-R, not unlike the original Mudcat Tavern, climate, current weather, temperature, etc. are all subject to where on the farm you would like to be at the moment. The Barn itself is climate controlled. It has to be. The body heat from all those people dancing (and frolicking in the hay,) actually set off the air conditioners! The dancing became especially joyous after we all learned of Caitrin's acceptance to UNC-Asheville. Now if you're concerned about what is happening outside, well, it felt like early autumn over near the trout pond. But I was told there was someone playing around in a foot of snow up in the high pasture. That might have been LEJ but I didn't get up there to look yet. If you want to check on him, you can get there by taking that other road. I am going to grab a quick taste of this lasagna and then I'm heading back over to the fire circle to listen to some more stories. I heard that Kat and Aíne were sharing some good ones. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Susan A-R Date: 12 Dec 99 - 11:08 PM Hmmm, the Hokey Pokey? Let's see if I can remember the tune. Got it! I hope that this barn is in a nicer clime than mine. If not, we'd all be huddled in the hay, ruining Niel's evening, I'm sure. It's clammyu and cold, and our sudden snow (eight unpredicted inches yesterday) has settled into a heavy wet blanket. I should have gone out and made a snow something in our yard, but had to cook instead. So is it warm here? Is it beer and Tee shirt country? If not, I'm heading for that hay stack with my down comforter and my fiddle will just be sticking out from under things a bit. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 12 Dec 99 - 10:37 PM You got it, Caitrin. Let's party! IT'S JUST COUNTRY BOYS AND GIRLS GETTIN' DOWN ON THE FARM! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 12 Dec 99 - 10:30 PM Finally managed to get on...the 'cat's been refusing me entrance every time I've tried to get on. So, are we ready to party now? |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 12 Dec 99 - 09:23 PM Hey everybody--I'M BACK! I've been trying all night to get on Mudcat, but the server keeps going down. JL, that short freckle-faced kid sounds a lot like me, except for the great dance moves. I just got some GREAT Celtic music yesterday, anyone wanna hear Andy M.Stewart doing a driving version of Tibbie Fowler? --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 12 Dec 99 - 08:21 PM JL, I am flashing back on a routine the Smothers Brothers did about dancing with two left feet. With a one-two-two, one-two-two -- or something like that. It was probably an intro for "Crabs Walk Sideways But Lobsters Walk Straight". Thanks for reminding me of it. But now that everyone seems to be heading out onto the floor ('cepting the ones up in that pile of hay,) I suppose I might as well give it a try. BarbaraLynn, I hope you're wearin' your steel-toed boots. If not, you might want stand too close whilst were doin' this Hokey Pokey. Then maybe as the sun touches the top of the distant mountains, those who want to can head out with me to the fire circle over near the trout pond to do the Gahn Dance. Afterwards we could sit by the fire and tell some great stories. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Lin in Kansas Date: 11 Dec 99 - 09:38 PM Goldarn it! Sorry, folks--Those of us with two left feet can only do *half* the Hokey Pokey. Hokey Pokey Folkie fibrillating? Scintillating! (my sides hurt...y'all are too much...) |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 11 Dec 99 - 09:05 PM Hokey Pokey Folkie? My goodness. I'll second JL...This is a lovely party, Mr. Allan! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Neil Lowe Date: 11 Dec 99 - 02:46 PM ...the line forms to the left to do the "Hokey Pokey", because in the final analysis, as has been said before, "that's what it's all about." Musical accompaniment graciously provided by the Druids. Serious cross-threading here.... Regards, Neil (the fibrillating folkie) |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Lin in Kansas Date: 11 Dec 99 - 02:31 AM Oh man! Have to be away a couple days and look at all the good stuff I missed!! (Please, somebody tell me there's a sliver of catfish and cornbread left--sob!) Coleslaw? Little hoppin' John? Yeah, sure. Nah, pecan pie later, Caitrin's offered me a waltz after a bit (and congrats to you, girl, on acceptance at UNC-Asheville!) Now, lessee-- ...giggles from the haystack...(and heavy breathin'--Neil, did you find your tabs? We worry about ya, ol' son!) ...Susan and Bill doin' a fiddle duet on Ashokan Farewell...sounds wonderful, you two! ...LEJ and horse still missing... ...Mbo waving his hands around (and several other people's too, from the sounds of it)... and way over in the corner, who's the freckle-faced short kid with all the great dance moves? He and that big bunch he brought with him sure do seem to be havin' a fine time! Ain't this just a real nice place? Mr. Allan, you surely do host a mighty good party!

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: BarbaraLynn Date: 11 Dec 99 - 01:15 AM Sorry I'm late! Got back from helpin' out Allan C. with them fish, then was rushin' to do frybread and git the cabbage grated for to bring my coleslaw dish -- I prefer the Central American style, with vinegar and hot chili seasoning, so that's what I made. Now, if'n you find it TOO hot, jes' wrap some up in one o' them pieces of warm frybread, and it'll do ya jes' fine. Soon as I wash these here hands, I'll be ready to dance! Barb |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 10 Dec 99 - 09:13 PM Allan, I make it without carrots, but I'm not really a cole slaw authority. I actually don't really like it at all. It's one of my great failings as a Southern girl, along with the fact that I don't like potato salad. And for those of you who missed my tooting of my own horn because you'd already left the Cantina: I've been accepted at UNC-Asheville! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Susan A-R Date: 10 Dec 99 - 08:48 PM Here's the promised lasagne. We've got pesto lasagne with fresh tomatoes on top, or artichoke heart lasagne with puttanesca sauce. Oh, and I happened to have a cabbage, so here's my version of coleslaw, helmans mayo, vinegar, onions, and lots of black pepper and dill. No sweet stuff for me until after dinner. Bert, Vance didn't sing Contry and Western Rap. He did come by the Kitchen today for lunch, and sat and chowed down and talked for about half an hour. Neat man, and what a lot of fun. He actually did a lot of pretty serious songs last night, but the patter literally had me doubled over laughing. Bill, I really do know Ashokan's Farewell, so let's get to it. I find that if folks are dancing, it's a great time to learn a tune, 'cause you play it over and over and over and . . . |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 10 Dec 99 - 07:47 PM Caitrin, the cole slaw sounds like a great idea! Do you make yours with or without carrots? I have heard that some folks even put in apples. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Bert Date: 10 Dec 99 - 05:20 PM Mbo, He might have done, he's a folk singer and you know how bad they are for 'borrowing' Suasan A-R, Isn't Vance Gilbert Great? Did he sing 'Country and Western Rap'? |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 10 Dec 99 - 04:23 PM You know, if we're going to have fried catfish and hushpuppies and corn bread, I think cole slaw has to make an appearance, too. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Roger the skiffler Date: 10 Dec 99 - 05:47 AM Thought I'd drop by and scrounge some of 'Seed's Madeira (if it's Sercial) and play a tune on my utriculus but it sems to have disappeared, nice to have some decent food here, the Neil Young Center seem to serve up nothing but mutton broth at the moment,hey...wait a minute, DOH! Wiat till I see that cook! The other residents were interested in the Mudcat time capsule: they kindly voted for my kazoo and insist they'll bring it along straight away. RtS |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Lonesome EJ Date: 10 Dec 99 - 12:30 AM LEJ rides slowly by on his Medicine Wagon, noting the laughter and music coming from the old Barn. He stops and waters his horse at the creek, smelling fried catfish and hush puppies wafting through the woods. "Ye smell that, Dobbin? Minds me o' home.... but I have promises to keep." The old horse raises his streaming muzzle ,saying "and miles to go before we sleep." "I get the only talkin' horse in Mudcat land and damned if he won't keep quotin Robert Frost," says LEJ." I took the path less trodden," quotes the horse. "Ah shut up," says LEJ. They head toward the lights of town and the next medicine show. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Willie-O Date: 09 Dec 99 - 11:49 PM Definitely need a lot of hay with the way the mercury's dropping...sorry I'm late, I was sittin up with that blinkin computer workin on my magnum opus...before that I had a meeting but I'm all right now...think I'll get my fiddle out too. I saw Natalie MacMaster on Monday night (at the National Arts Centre, quite hoity toity and I went with my parents who are in their 80's) and that always gets the tunes going through my head. I've been trying to get around to learning all of Ashokan Farewell fer the longest time--I just remember one part, sort of, and fake the rest, so I'll follow yer lead Susan--you don't fake it too, do ya? Lasagna sounds good, right about now...tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Susan A-R Date: 09 Dec 99 - 11:05 PM Allan C, what a website!!!! I've just gotten home from a Vance Gilbert concert and I have not laughed so much in about three months. Now I need to resort to fiddle and bow again because I am too hoarse to sing. I have my throat coat tea here by the computer and am listening to some Archie Fisher in order to setle in for the night (I also had a cup of real coffee before the concert, I am a wee bit wired.) Gee Allan, we may need a bigger hay pile, given the activity over there. well, I'll raise my mug o' tea and tune her up. How about Ashoakan (sp) farewell played a bit lightly so that folks can do a nice light waltz. (Nothing too rowdy or I'll be up all night, and I have to make a LOT of lasagne tomorrow)

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 09 Dec 99 - 09:53 PM You know, I looked ALL OVER for "A Cold Budweiser and a Sweet Potato" but I just couldn't find the lyrics! That really frosts my Froot Loops! I really wanted to share it with y'all. So, I wrapped up two of my classes for this semester today. My figure drawing classmates and I hung our clay hands up in the little museum in the Art building. We suspended them from string on a bulletin board. Some hands were placed so they seemed to be reaching out of the wall. "Let us out! We want Mudcat Barn cornbread!" --Mbo |

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 09 Dec 99 - 03:50 PM Alan, your Basic Southern Cornbread is pretty much the same as my recipe. And it's right...buttermilk is absolutely necessary. It can be made with cracklins as well. (Though I don't really like cracklin' cornbread, it's a big favorite of many members of my family.) I always use Yelton's cornmeal. It really does taste better, I swear. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 09 Dec 99 - 03:18 PM Bert, I think your friend might have ripped off Tracy Byrds' "Lifestlyes of The No So Rich And Famous." Either that, or whoever wrote that ripped off your pal in Alabama! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Bert Date: 09 Dec 99 - 12:50 PM Mbo, don't know about those but I've got a friend in Alabama who wrote a song called "An RC cola and a Moon Pie to eat" |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Neil Lowe Date: 09 Dec 99 - 12:31 PM ...Bless ye, Bonnie lass, and I would submit that those things you see fit to compliment so generously in others are mirrored qualities you yourself possess, especially when you have none other than the benevolent and venerable sages of the Mudcat singing your praises. On occasion, you even seem to be able to neutralize the 'Spawmeister's acid wit, no small feat in itself. Keep on keepin' on. Regards, Neil (who confuses the original context of "Be still, my heart" with a dearth of glycerin tabs) |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Little Neophyte Date: 09 Dec 99 - 10:30 AM Charles I'd prefer to be seduced by charm than drugged. Mbo, I've always looked up to Charles holding my image of him in the highest regards. That is why I call him Uncle Charles, I feel it is respectful. I would say Neil is a good example of charm. BB |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 09 Dec 99 - 10:27 AM Does anyone know "Channukkah Is Here"? My uncle's school orchestra played it 7 years ago, and I've been searching for it ever since! "Fried Catfish and a Plate of Hushpuppies" sounds like a good song name, kinder like "A Cold Budweiser and a Sweet Potato." Anyone know THAT one? Deedle deedle deedle... |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 09 Dec 99 - 10:22 AM I am about stuffed! I just had a plateload of fried catfish and hushpuppies. De-e-elicious! I 'preciate it! Maybe by the time New Years arrives I'll have room for some of that good ol'hoppin' John I have known lot's of folks who just couldn't properly begin a year without some. But I believe as soon as I finish some of this fine skillet cornbread, I would sure like to have a small sample of that pecan pie. It smells wonderful! But after that I am going to be ready to grab a jug of moonshine and set down on a square bale for a spell and listen to some of this good music. Of course, after a while, we could do a little more seasonal music if anyone was interested. Or, even though a bit late, I found some pretty neat songs for Hanukkah we might try singing. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 09 Dec 99 - 10:02 AM Forgot about the radio show. Am I stupid, or is Banjo Bonnie really Seed's niece? I never understand these things. Escamillo, you're just in time to hear some haybale music! --Mbo |

(Sorry, just had to consult with my other self fer a moment - I may be a split personality, but I'll always have each other!) Kind words, dear lady, and thank you for ignoring the rumours! 'Twas likewise nice to meet you. Until next time ... (but I'll make it a point to chance by the haystack about a quarter after 10 - double-dog-DARE-you!) |

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Susan A-R Date: 08 Dec 99 - 11:36 PM Bonnie, we're working on Toronto. Give us a few years and we'll probably be up there (yup, ANOTHER couple of Americans) I've brought along a couple of pecan pies tonight, just to follow up on the catfish and skillet bread, and I also have a nice pot of hoppin' John (I'll make it again for New Years if it fits) Don't tell the folks at my vegetarian establiiishment, but I did throw a nice hunk of salt pork into this batch. It does something to those black eyed peas. Now, I'm up for learning tunes (not too brain dead, I don't think) Waltz Acros Texas hadn't ought to spook that roan too much (Hang on Night Owl) I'll leave the young folks to romp in the hay, just don't stir it up too much or I'll have to take drugs that interfere with my beer drinking in order to keep from sneezing my head off. (What is it that always makes us smart little cusses smoke in barns? It's the ONLY place I ever smoked, with my buddy Janey McKinny when I was about 13, and it is such a DUMB place to smoke.) Ah yes, Watlz Across Texas, where were we? |
