Subject: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughtan From: GUEST,ND Date: 01 May 16 - 06:19 AM Does anyone know of a recording or clip of Adam McNaughtan's song, "Tunnock's Caramel Wafers"? I've heard him perform it live but would like a copy for a friend. |
Subject: Lyr Add: TUNNOCK'S CARAMEL WAFERS (Adam McNaughtan From: Jack Campin Date: 01 May 16 - 08:12 AM I can't find a recording either. Here are the words: The Tunnocks Caramel Wafer (Adam McNaughtan) Tune: The Barren Rocks of Aden A hundred year an' mair's gone roon Since Thomas Tunnock raised eighty poun' An' proudly paid his money doon To be a purveyor an' baker. At weddin's, pic-nics an' soirees, Wi' bags o' buns an' full high teas Tom Tunnock showed his expertise As Lanarkshire's pie-maker. But little was he thinkin' as the dough he made For the mutton pies an' tottie scones that he purveyed, He was layin' the foundation o' a world-wide trade In Tunnock's Caramel Wafers. When the First World War was done, Archie Tunnock, Thomas's son, Came back hame to Uddingston, Breid-winner o' the faim'ly. Archie baked an' Archie planned, An' he watched the company expand To be the finest in the land For wholesome food an' hamely. Wi' a growin' reputation for traditional fare An' a knowledge o' technology beyond compare, Profits ploughed intae machinery a' helped prepare For the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer. The Saicont War brought mony a qualm: Synthetic cream an' turnip jam An' trifle bein' delivert by tram Wherever they could send it. But Archie Tunnock had a scheme To match a sweet-toothed nation's dream, A chocolate biscuit treat supreme When the sugar rationin' endit. Steyin' at the bakin' plate frae morn till night, Mixin' caramel an' milk until he got it right; In nineteen fifty-wan the world got its first bite At a Tunnock's Caramel Wafer. The rest o' the tale is easy told: The distinctive foil of red and gold, The vans that multiplied ten-fold, Deliverin' Caramel Wafers. Frae Motherwell to Martinique Three million people every week, Jew an' Arab, Turk an' Greek, Agree on their favourite wafer. But though the Caramel Wafer may be known world-wide, It's always been in Uddingston that Tunnocks bide, An' the firm an' the community and faim'ly's pride Is the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer. |

Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Harmonium Hero Date: 02 May 16 - 07:14 PM Only thing better than Tunnock's Caramel Wafers? - Tunnock's Teacakes. God eats those, I happen to know. John Kelly. |

Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Senoufou Date: 03 May 16 - 03:03 AM We flew up to Edinburgh last year. It was a magical experience in a little Dornier plane (15-seater, dinky black propellers) Only one flight attendant, and although the flight was just an hour long, she brought us all a nice cup of tea and...a Tunnock's caramel wafer! She even came round with extra ones for the greedy folk like me. I agree God eats them, Harmonium. |
Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Richard Mellish Date: 03 May 16 - 07:07 AM I thought I'd posted here a day or two ago but it hasn't appeared so I'm trying again. Can some kind elf please correct the spelling of McNaughtan, with an "a" instead of an "o". |
Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Jack Campin Date: 03 May 16 - 07:54 AM Not helped by Wikipedia and his CD distributor also getting it wrong. I used to remember that he and the Edinburgh second-hand bookshop used to spell their names differently. But I could never remember which was which. There are also M'Naghten the English murderer (who they named the McNaughton Rules after), Half-Hung MacNaghten the Irish murderer, and Nechtan the king of the Picts (not to be confused with two other Nechtans who were also kings of the Picts, one of them possibly mythological but not to be confused with the mythical Irish god Nechtan or with the two probably different St Nectans in Devon and Cornwall, at least one of whom might have existed). And you ought to spell Nechtan's clan as mac Neachdainn anyway. You can see why the singer decided to call his shop Adam Books when he was in the book trade. |
Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 03 May 16 - 08:47 AM I once decorated the back of a door using a hundred or so carefully unfolded foil wrappers from Tunnock's Teacakes - fixed with a water based size, the effect was rather quite stunning. Graphically, they're the very embodiment of Hoary Tradition and it pleases me no end to see them employing same on the teacake page of their website - but, hold on, what's this? Dark chocolate teacakes? Methinks a jaunt down the ASDAs in in order... http://www.tunnock.co.uk/products/teacakes/ |
Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Jack Campin Date: 03 May 16 - 08:58 AM At least around here, the Co-Op usually has the dark chocolate teacakes in stock. By far my favourite Tunnock's product. |
Subject: RE: Tunnock's caramel wafers, A McNaughton From: Gallus Moll Date: 03 May 16 - 03:29 PM 45% of the population were not impressed by Mr Tunnock in 2014----- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST Date: 12 Jan 18 - 11:52 AM Hello there. I stumbled on your conversation by sheer chance. I commissioned Adam to write the Tunnock's Caramel Wafers song and if you give me an idea of why you would like a copy of the recording I can probably arrange to get one to you. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Gallus Moll Date: 12 Jan 18 - 01:37 PM Megan L (May 2016) - Mr Tunnock decided to use a union flag instead of a Scottish wan oan his biscuits -- - - so a lot of us are daein' oor best tae avoid eating his products (which is not easy -- - !!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 12 Jan 18 - 02:14 PM The tune is one many Scots at least will know: the pipe march "Barren Rocks of Aden". So the first 4 lines of each verse go to the first half of the tune. The next 4 lines to the second half of the tune. And the final 4 lines of each verse are that double tempo thing, much beloved of some pipers (and Gilbert and Sullivan, which I happen to know that Adam likes!) I got the words from a friend at our local session, and have sung it on a number of occasions: if you're lucky, I might have a supply of TCWs with me! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 13 Jan 18 - 06:51 AM Could Adam be persuaded to do a song for the teacakes? Preferably mentioning the dark chocolate ones? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST,akenaton Date: 13 Jan 18 - 06:58 AM I remember old Archie Tunnock sellin' broken biscuits and misshapen cakes at the Barras in the fifties; Ye could get a big bag o' chocolate wafers for a shillin'. I remember him as a friendly approachable old man, quite tubby and genial.....the stereotypical baker! If I get offered a cup of tea and biscuits from a customer, I always examine the plate, look disappointed and say......"Whit! nae Tunnocks?" Usually raises a laugh....or a skelp on the ear! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST,Observer Date: 13 Jan 18 - 07:09 AM Your loss Gallus, but the story told in the song should have alerted you and the others in that 45% that commercially and economically the Tunnocks as a family are thankfully not daft. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST,Sol Date: 13 Jan 18 - 01:13 PM Disagree with Observer. Had they continued as always nobody would have batted an eye on Scotland or elsewhere. Instead they seem to have upset 50% of their home market. Odd decision if you ask me. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST Date: 13 Jan 18 - 01:32 PM The battle's lost for the immediate future Gallus and I'm sorry about that having voted for Independence, but let's not turn ourselves into hate filled remoaners like those who cannot accept the EU result. This isn't a political thread. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Gallus Moll Date: 13 Jan 18 - 05:57 PM Ah wisnae bein' political, jist pointin' oot the possibly negative commercial aspect of the design change -- hiv ye seen whit an M&S 'customer relations' person (apparently no longer associated wi' them) telt an elder wumman wha wrote tae them complainin' aboot thir Scotch bein' call't 'British' and I believe hivvin' a butcher's apron sorry union flag oan the boatle? He/she telt the wumman that the Scots had hid thir referendum and needed to accept that Scotland wis noo 'part of England'!!!!! ???? and so 'whiskey' (!!! Aye, that's hoo she spelt it!!)wis noo under the union (or possibly even the st george's ) flag. collective dropping of jaws across the Scottish nation -- and an immediate boycott of M&S - tho they have now issued an apology. (who is old enough to remember the boycott we did of South African goods during the apartheid era? there were also many performers who refused to go there - or if they did they insisted on unsegregated audiences. there were songs too -- I remember Gordeanna singing 'I support the boycott, here's the reason why, I can taste apartheid in an outspan orange pie'. Can't remember it all - nor who composed it? anyone enlighten me?) Surely one of the reasons for folk music is to protest? anti nuclear songs, political songs, songs about injustice - and not just in modern times? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Jack Campin Date: 13 Jan 18 - 06:16 PM Caramel Wafers were never my thing, but I have some dark chocolate teacakes at home and the only motif on the packet with a national connotation is a Scottish rampant lion holding a red flag. I don't have a problem with that. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Gallus Moll Date: 13 Jan 18 - 06:29 PM how old is the box Jack? I thought Mr Tunnock had changed the teacakes motif round about the time of the Scottish referendum - which is what the fuss was about! Been looking for composer / all the lyrics of The Boycott Song - not found info yet but there's some youtubes of Gordeanna / Eurydice, also Ronnie Alexander singing it. (I was sure I remembered Gordeanna singng 'orange pie' way back when, but with Eurydice she sings 'lemon pie' ) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Jan 18 - 08:30 AM I bought them at the local Co-Op last week - short dated and half price but they aren't past the "Use By" yet. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Johnny J Date: 14 Jan 18 - 09:28 AM I doubt if that many of the 44.3% who voted for Independence in 2014, let alone the majority of voters, really gave much thought or a jot about Tunnock's teacakes and wafers. Nor will they worry about boycotting supermarkets etc. Only the hard core activists are that interested. Moreover, I also believe that we should take what is printed in "The National" with a pinch of salt along with the opinions and claims of it's contributors. In the unlikely event that the incident actually occurred as reported in the newspaper, this appears to have been the response of only one employee who is no longer even employed by the company who actually confirmed that this was not their official stance....which suggests that the views were that of a rogue employee. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Johnny J Date: 14 Jan 18 - 09:30 AM Oops, 44.7%, I believe. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST,Sol Date: 14 Jan 18 - 09:59 AM To follow up on Johnny J's post, I would keep that pinched salt handy for when you're reading the Daily Mail, Express, Telegraph, et al, |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Johnny J Date: 14 Jan 18 - 10:04 AM I don't take any of those either.... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: GUEST,Sol Date: 14 Jan 18 - 10:26 AM I suppose that was my point, Johnny. The Press are untrustworthy no matter who they are affiliated to. Fake news makers should be held accountable but they're not. However, getting back to the original subject.Tunnocks make lovely biscuits. Adam McNaughtan writes terrific songs and is a gentleman, to boot. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tunnock's Caramel Wafers (A McNaughtan) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 14 Jan 18 - 07:33 PM Do they still give them out for free on the Parks buses between Edinburgh and Glasgow? Both teacakes and wafers the last time I travelled on one! |
