John from Kansas, Sorcha, and Spaw are deceased. You can search their names for the Obit threads.
I don't remember "the DA" and mousethief just left, AFAIK.

Mousethief is alive and well (AFAIK) and posting regularly on Facebook, as are many other ex-mudcatters.

I didn't know Sorcha had gone! I miss Kat, Don T, Art Thieme, Spaw and Don Firth and a lot of others. I haven't seen a khandu post here for a long time now. He wrote some of the funniest posts I have ever read here - and he is also a smashing blues guitarist!

I also will be missing Curmudgeon.
I give a salute to those who came before and shared what was true and honest.

Mellow but outrageous stories that are wise with age, without being maudlin are mudcat's unique gross natural product. There are many Chrysanthemums and autumn gold and scarlet leaves below the line on BS.
Only the babies of the Boomers remain. The experience of beauty may be similar for the young and old but opinions do change. The difference between the young and older may even change the matter of life or death.

As a young man I discovered a Nazi war criminal at Highland Nursing Home in Rochester NY. Replete with Nazi memorabilia he led a demented life recreating patriotic marches and slogans. A girlfriend of mine led me to him. The more I learned the more I was certain he was in a state of advanced dementia.

Indian tribes commonly would not punish the lost and insane seniors of the tribe and neither could I, morally speaking. So I never contacted Simon Wiesenthal. After all I felt I knew more than my seniors.

Now that I am a senior I would have acted differently. I would have easily executed punishment for the demented insane cruelty of the old Nazi's acts of cruelty and insane demented behavior. I would not have the compassion you might expect from this old examined life.

I know now that ethical decisions involving justice are more a matter of Perspectivism from wisdom and not just from age.

Old age does not guarantee honesty but it does encourage it

Oh, gee. This thread mentions so many good people who have left us, mostly by death. It was such a thrill to get regular phone calls from Rick Fielding, and to correspond regularly with folk icons like Jean Ritchie and Art Thieme and Sandy Paton. And I will always have a special place in my heart for the wisdom and wonderful singing of Mary LaMarca, especially since I have a sister who is now suffering from ALS.
It has been so wonderful to have contact with such people.

SIlent friends: Jen Ellen, Peter T., CarolC, Banjo Bonnie, Tweed. Bald Eagle. Others I cannot even resurrect in memory.

Of those that leapt off the mortal dance-floor, Spaw had no equal, durn his mammalucca butt. Rick Fielding, the most gracious singing soul around. Art Thieme was a patron saint. Kytrad was worshipped from afar. And Sandy Paton was like the great-uncle of us all!

Sonnet 04/01/05                        CMLXVIII

In every thread someone has to be last,
Though we may trade places in patterned dance.
Each one may lead, then follow: Thoughts are cast
On screen to with all others take their chance.
Come join the waltz of thousand partners: Share
Some moments with a varied crowd, or learn
Of osprey nest, or Bob. Each of us care
Enough that we to this mad dance return.
Each of us add to tune, and join in chords
That sweep across our posts: We fill the time
With what investment each of us affords.
It is just journey that gives cause to climb.
As we give, so shall each some gift receive,
And only for those gone shall we yet grieve.

Anybody here remember Shula. She was a woman of great wisdom. I got to visit her in Suburban Baltimore one year when I was at the Getaway. We sang the night away. A couple of years later, I got an email from her husband, telling me that she had died.

Mudcat Fiction co-writers from that strange and interesting era of the Forum. Amos and Janie I still speak to almost weekly, but whatever became of the amazing Peter T and Jenellyn? And of course Katlaughing, who passed out of this world several years ago, and of whom at least a portion was borne on a breeze into the Chesapeake Bay on a warm October afternoon.

Hi Joe,

Was it Shula who started the virtual session thread. That was so good! We all offered songs or tunes to perform, and it was like being at a real session in our imaginations. I remember Shula's posts very fondly.

Oh, I remember Shula well. I exchanged PMs with her on a couple of things. She was a kind, clever, humorous gift to the forum.

I also remember Frank in the swamps, TheBigPinkLad, Two Bears, Old Timer Gene, and a host of others... especially Pene Azul, who was a connoisseur of good beer, as well as a brilliant programmer and a very good judge of reason & balance.

Them were the days....

Jeff took care of his dad for many years, and that kept Jeff at home a lot and gave him plenty of time to do some really innovative programming at Mudcat. He and I used to stay up late at night, on opposite ends of the US, experimenting with new stuff for Mudcat. I'd dream up something we could use, and he'd have it working in an hour. I really enjoyed the time I spent with him.

Jeff's life changed radically when his dad died, and he no longer had time for Mudcat. I miss him. I met him in person only a couple of times, but he became a good friend.

Guess you could describe me as Facebook-challenged.
In truth I don't even rise to the challenge.
It's true that my online searches have permitted me
to look at and scroll through Facebook public pages,
including that for the Mudcat Café.

Mudcat is certainly the poorer
for the choice of former Mudcat members who socialize on Facebook.
I guess we'll never have another report
on sightings of bluetits.

It's especially poignant to see posts
from returning Mudcatters like InOBU or Mick Lowe
and them asking after this or that Mudcat colleague
from the good old days,
and have to tell them,
Well, so and so decamped for Facebook.
