I have set aside some jars of home-made reduced-sugar jam for the silent auction. Also, a cast-iron candle-lantern in the shape of an owl (nice for outside, with a citronella candle in it) and an enormous Chinese porcelain teapot, both previously the property of my elder brother. Both items have been in my house for three years without being used even once, so Out They Go. But they're nice (at least in my opinion), so the silent auction is the destination.

I'd be happy to help with random craft activities (I have fond memories of an impromptu let's make stuff out of broken jewelry" workshop last time I came, mumblety-many years ago.)

Would home-canned goodies, or fresh-baked ones, or jars of fudge sauce, be good for the auction?

If you are coming, pleas remember to bring something for the silent auction, which funds the Getaway scholarship fund. Equally important, bring a little cash or your check book so you can bid.

Items small and large welcomed. Many of us Mudcatters, me included, have in the past been able to attend the Getaway because of scholarships.

If it is covered in dirt or fuzzy bunnies, or is actual trash, please don't bring it. Otherwise, one person's trash is another's treasure.

Well folks, for all of you folks visiting the Getaway that are still in town on Monday night September 26th, as well as those who are here all the time, once again I will be hosting a sing at Zed's Cafe 8225 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring MD from 6:30-8:45pm for all who are not completely sung out yet. Good food served in a living room atmosphere. We did this last year on Getaway Monday, and I do it when special people pass through town for a while now. No alcoholic beverages and we're just singing for the hell of it, but good times have always been had. I'd like to make this a yearly tradition, and the owner likes having us there. Let's join together for one more night of song to complete our Getaway weeKend memories. I hope to see you there, if you're still in town and available.

I have sent in my registration. I believe I have convinced my wife Marge to attend this year. We recently purchased a used Road Trek RV. We are not sure why we did it since we have never been in an RV before. I believe the RV will also be attending.

I officially retired and I hope to learn some new tunes and songs.

I believe I will be assisting in a Humorous Songs Workshop along with another old hand and I'll be aassisting Donna Fletcher in a workshop on "ways to sing the blues".

I am looking forward to all of it.

We're looking forward to our Getaway return after missing last year due to a poorly-scheduled work commitment.

It is going to be a very *interesting* Getaway for us. As the local gang knows - but the rest of you likely don't since lazy me never posted it here - we adopted a baby boy last year. So there will be THREE of us turning up in lovely West River.

BTW, the little guy is already a showman. Score one for environment versus genetics... 8-)

Something that should be corrected in the registration information: it says something to the effect that the Getaway is cheaper if one joins FSGW. FSGW is a wonderful organization, especially if one lives in the Greater DC area (we don't). OTOH, it costs more for a family membership ($45) plus two adult 3-day camps ($422, total $467) than for two non-member 3-day registrations ($462). Just saying.

There are quite a few folklore references tucked into Bo Diddley songs. But I seriously doubt it'll ever formally happen....

Thanks for the ideas, folks! It's getting to the point where we have to declare "enough!" -- we definitely now have enough to fill up the time. But we still do consider all ideas, though some of them may have to be put off until a future Getaway.

BTW, Mike -- we would LOVE to do doo-wop! It's a perennial favorite, but it takes just the right leader, and we don't know yet whether that person will be able to make it this year. We shall see!

Tawmmie and I will be there in September. We look forward to seeing friends again and meeting new ones. A fews years back there was sort of a doo-wop workshop that was a lot of fun. It gave me a chance to sing bass, which is a kick for me.

I am planning to be there.

Lately I have been very interested in the original songs of those parodies that are now better known than the originals. (Who besides Rick Spencer (who is a real singer) and I still sing Henry Clay Work's 1865 hit 'The Ship That Never Returned'? But everyone seems to know 'Charlie on the MTA.') I know of a couple of others but I am sure other folks know far more.

I gave some of these suggestions to Kathie already, but I'll post them here, too, to get things started:

ONE MORNING IN MAY---There are an incredible number of songs that happen in May, as I noticed at a recent sing or two that had nothing to do with the subject. It's Spring, things naturally happen and May rhymes with a whole lot more things than, say, April. General:"As I Roved Out", "Claudy Banks" Maritime: "The Rosabella", "Lord Franklin" Spring: "Hal-An-Tow", songs of workers' solidarity......You get the idea.......

KINGS AND QUEENS----Songs about them provide the easiest way for us singers of traditional music to collect any sort of royalties.....

FOOTWEAR----"Old Shoes And Leggings", "With My Pit Boots On", "O, Dem Golden Slippers", "Put My Little Shoes Away", Herring Boxes without topses, lack of footwear, Army boots that are never the right size and any other fitting or at least loosely fitting topics loosely fitting topics......Even pesky bothersome Shoe Flies.....

CIVIL WAR---Grant yourself a little Lee-way to get up the Hill Early, grab a Pillow or a Couch and Bragg about your side.....

VILE FLUIDS---Demon Alchohol, Jake, Honky Red, Supersonic Tonic, black frack waters, pollution, Love Potions (up to #9 and beyond), great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts, excretions of all sorts, fountain water from Flint and Mrs. Murphy's Chowder....Bring your own vial.....

Yippee! Planning for the 2016 FSGW Getaway is well underway, and the Program Committee -- me, Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), and longtime Getaway-goers Kathie Mack and Lisa Null -- is ready for your ideas!

This year's Getaway will be held September 23-26 (NOTE -- earlier than usual!) at West River Conference Center on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. This is the same place we've been for the last several years, and it's a beautiful spot.

If you'd like more information about the Getaway, visit www.fsgw.org, scroll down a bit, and click on "Getaway" in the left-hand column. This lists the specifics for last year's event, but of course this year's will be similar. Complete, up-to-date information -- including an application form -- will be available on the FSGW site soon. Or you can put "Getaway" into the Mudcat filter box, set the time for 2-3 years, and you'll get more commentary than anyone could reasonably read.

We have a great lineup of special guests this year: We're delighted to welcome SALLY ROGERS, a marvelous songwriter and singer of traditional and contemporary songs. British-born DAVID JONES presents music-hall songs, stories, sea songs and ballads that will make you laugh or melt your heart. LARRY KAPLAN is a fine guitarist and singer-songwriter with a maritime bent. If you like songs of cowboys and other working men, STEVE CORMIER will fill the bill. GEOFF KAUFMAN, a shanty-man at Mystic Seaport, will share songs of New England and the sea. SARO LYNCH-THOMASON comes from Asheville, NC, with lots of Appalachian ballads and regional songs. And to top it all off, the trio BARE BONES (Bill and Rebecca Kimmons and their "spare rib" Dock Cutlip) will bring us exquisite a capella harmonies and gospel songs. All of these folks will be performing in mini-concerts and participating in lots of workshops.

We are now starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions. One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but that's hard to do until we know who's coming and what they'd like to do. So: please tell us if you plan to come, and what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only 2 days, after all, so not everything can make the final cut), we do promise to consider all ideas. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me.

The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now!
