Subject: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 08 May 16 - 03:28 PM Yippee! Planning for the 2016 FSGW Getaway is well underway, and the Program Committee -- me, Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), and longtime Getaway-goers Kathie Mack and Lisa Null -- is ready for your ideas! This year's Getaway will be held September 23-26 (NOTE -- earlier than usual!) at West River Conference Center on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. This is the same place we've been for the last several years, and it's a beautiful spot. If you'd like more information about the Getaway, visit www.fsgw.org, scroll down a bit, and click on "Getaway" in the left-hand column. This lists the specifics for last year's event, but of course this year's will be similar. Complete, up-to-date information -- including an application form -- will be available on the FSGW site soon. Or you can put "Getaway" into the Mudcat filter box, set the time for 2-3 years, and you'll get more commentary than anyone could reasonably read. We have a great lineup of special guests this year: We're delighted to welcome SALLY ROGERS, a marvelous songwriter and singer of traditional and contemporary songs. British-born DAVID JONES presents music-hall songs, stories, sea songs and ballads that will make you laugh or melt your heart. LARRY KAPLAN is a fine guitarist and singer-songwriter with a maritime bent. If you like songs of cowboys and other working men, STEVE CORMIER will fill the bill. GEOFF KAUFMAN, a shanty-man at Mystic Seaport, will share songs of New England and the sea. SARO LYNCH-THOMASON comes from Asheville, NC, with lots of Appalachian ballads and regional songs. And to top it all off, the trio BARE BONES (Bill and Rebecca Kimmons and their "spare rib" Dock Cutlip) will bring us exquisite a capella harmonies and gospel songs. All of these folks will be performing in mini-concerts and participating in lots of workshops. We are now starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions. One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but that's hard to do until we know who's coming and what they'd like to do. So: please tell us if you plan to come, and what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only 2 days, after all, so not everything can make the final cut), we do promise to consider all ideas. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me. The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now! Looking forward to seeing you all! Nancy |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 08 May 16 - 05:27 PM Hi Tim! We sure did enjoy seeing you last year -- maybe again one of these times? Sorry about the conflict with Portsmouth, but these things do happen. You'll probably see my son Ken Schatz there too. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Leadfingers Date: 09 May 16 - 04:07 AM It is in my diary - I have every intention of being there |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 09 May 16 - 10:34 AM Excellent -- it will be great to see you, Terry! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Severn Date: 09 May 16 - 06:50 PM I gave some of these suggestions to Kathie already, but I'll post them here, too, to get things started: ONE MORNING IN MAY---There are an incredible number of songs that happen in May, as I noticed at a recent sing or two that had nothing to do with the subject. It's Spring, things naturally happen and May rhymes with a whole lot more things than, say, April. General:"As I Roved Out", "Claudy Banks" Maritime: "The Rosabella", "Lord Franklin" Spring: "Hal-An-Tow", songs of workers' solidarity......You get the idea....... KINGS AND QUEENS----Songs about them provide the easiest way for us singers of traditional music to collect any sort of royalties..... FOOTWEAR----"Old Shoes And Leggings", "With My Pit Boots On", "O, Dem Golden Slippers", "Put My Little Shoes Away", Herring Boxes without topses, lack of footwear, Army boots that are never the right size and any other fitting or at least loosely fitting topics loosely fitting topics......Even pesky bothersome Shoe Flies..... CIVIL WAR---Grant yourself a little Lee-way to get up the Hill Early, grab a Pillow or a Couch and Bragg about your side..... VILE FLUIDS---Demon Alchohol, Jake, Honky Red, Supersonic Tonic, black frack waters, pollution, Love Potions (up to #9 and beyond), great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts, excretions of all sorts, fountain water from Flint and Mrs. Murphy's Chowder....Bring your own vial..... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Leadfingers Date: 10 May 16 - 04:19 AM It has been suggested I should offer a whistle workshop again . Anyone intersted ? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: jacqui.c Date: 10 May 16 - 01:05 PM Try stopping us getting there! How about a 'Wives and Mothers' workshop. Plenty of subject matter there! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 11 May 16 - 08:38 AM Keep those ideas coming! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 12 May 16 - 08:08 PM No decision on that yet, Kendall. We're considering it, along with all the other suggestions we've received. Anybody got any more suggestions? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Janie Date: 12 May 16 - 10:17 PM No suggestions but gods, godesses or simple luck willin' and the crick don't rise, and neither me nor ma need nursing come the end of September, will be there:>) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 13 May 16 - 11:00 PM Sure will be good to see you, Janie! We missed you last year! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Celtaddict Date: 14 May 16 - 02:09 AM I am planning to be there. Lately I have been very interested in the original songs of those parodies that are now better known than the originals. (Who besides Rick Spencer (who is a real singer) and I still sing Henry Clay Work's 1865 hit 'The Ship That Never Returned'? But everyone seems to know 'Charlie on the MTA.') I know of a couple of others but I am sure other folks know far more. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 24 May 16 - 06:02 PM Nice try, Terry! Maybe if we keep doing this, somebody will come up with an actual suggestion... or not. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Amos Date: 24 May 16 - 06:23 PM I suggest that as many as possibly ever can should appear there. I am delighted to see my cowboy pal Steve Cormier will be doing the Getaway wrangle this year! I hsall be there. ANd just possibly, my newly-retired BBW in tow this time! A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: MMario Date: 24 May 16 - 07:17 PM Amos - your BBW actually exists? Old Age/Retirement for a subject? Not that I can think of anything to do for that subject...but I should be freshly retired at Getaway myself. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Amos Date: 24 May 16 - 07:32 PM MM: With luck we will both greet you as you sneak a break in the parking lot this September! :D |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: GUEST,Dani Date: 26 May 16 - 08:13 AM How about some loosey goosey spaces, with themes that aren't announced until the event? I remember enjoying Songs From A Hat, because it draws fascinating people who think like that : ) With double bonus points for more than one theme in a song as it progresses! Or is this a drinking game for another world..... Sally! Saddle! Cannon! Blackbird! Go! Clearly, it would be a master class : ) Dani (thinking) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Alaska Mike Date: 29 May 16 - 10:31 AM Tawmmie and I will be there in September. We look forward to seeing friends again and meeting new ones. A fews years back there was sort of a doo-wop workshop that was a lot of fun. It gave me a chance to sing bass, which is a kick for me. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Amos Date: 30 May 16 - 03:13 AM A drinking game with random songs? I am in with bells on. Single malt or sipping bourbon will do. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Leadfingers Date: 30 May 16 - 08:16 AM What are the rules ? And can I join in ?? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Lonesome EJ Date: 30 May 16 - 01:23 PM Really, Leadfingers? You're asking permission to join in?? Doesn't sound like the Leadfingers I remember. ;>) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Nancy King Date: 30 May 16 - 01:53 PM And he wants RULES, yet! Thanks for the ideas, folks! It's getting to the point where we have to declare "enough!" -- we definitely now have enough to fill up the time. But we still do consider all ideas, though some of them may have to be put off until a future Getaway. BTW, Mike -- we would LOVE to do doo-wop! It's a perennial favorite, but it takes just the right leader, and we don't know yet whether that person will be able to make it this year. We shall see! Looking forward to seeing you all! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Jun 16 - 05:12 PM You'd need Sidewalk Bob for that one. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: Amos Date: 14 Jun 16 - 06:05 PM It would be awful good if Bobbo could make ti this year. Got some fine blues numbers we could work on together.. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon! From: GUEST,Severn Date: 15 Jun 16 - 03:53 PM As for that beat, I don't need a shave, but a two-bit haircut that doesn't look like one might be nice.......He DID incorporate bits of kids' games and a lullabye into his signature song. There are quite a few folklore references tucked into Bo Diddley songs. But I seriously doubt it'll ever formally happen.... |
