At the Aural tradition song circles and pot luck I was always asked to make a fudge pie, my baking specialty, taught to me by my now departed mom. It was January and very cold. Stan Rogers and his bass player, Jim Morrison came in from a gig the night before in Milwaukee. I remember they were hungry and Stan was grabbing a piece of the fudge pie and dipping it in the cool whip container and devouring it with glee. A fond memory.

yeah, i remember her emceeing the Aural Tradition concerts --

If i mistake me not, it has been some time, Aural Tradition was the organization, it did put on the concerts, but also had song circles.

I remember the time we met at Holstein's on a Sunday afternoon. It was magic.

I might also mention that Emily was involved in G.I. organizing during the Vietnam War.

Phil Cooper tried to get on Mudcat, but it was down. This is what he wanted to add:

I got on and tried to add some more and things were just spinning and not registering, here is a c&p of what I wrote: I don't know many more details than that. I was also shocked to hear she had passed away. Emily was a friend of mine since the early 1980's. She used to have Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for people with no other family in the area. I went to many of them over the years. The conversation was always brilliant. I even brought my parents to many of them in their later years. While Emily was an atheist, she always asked my religiously proper dad to say a grace before dinner at these functions. She had me write reviews for Come For to Sing magazine. She always shot straight in her reviews as well. Like a good movie reviewer, if you knew her taste, you could tell if you would like an album or not (sometimes you could figure if she didn't like it, that you might). When she stopped editing the magazine she went on the write articles and lecture about the need for medical ethics. Through her, I met Stan Rogers, had breakfast with John Renbourn and Jacquie McShee, and got recruited to pick Peter Bellamy up from the airport. (An aside on that, Peter and his then wife Anthea, were big fans of The Blues Brothers and wanted to know if we could drive by Joliet prison on the way into Chicago. They had no idea the prison was way the wrong direction.) The concerts she organized to raise funds for Come for to Sing were always great. She also helped run a concert series called Aural Tradition for several years, to help bring in performers who played on the traditional end of the folk spectrum. There's lots more I could talk about, but she will be missed.

I am very sorry to learn from Norma Waterson Carthy that Emily Friedman, longtime editor of the folk music magazine Come For to Sing, has died in Chicago after a bad fall.
