The first one came from a collection of Northumbrian smallpipe tunes, which gave only tunes, no words. If it has words, I suspect they would be some variant on "I saw three ships."

Say, is there a text for this, or just a variety of tunes? I like the tunes, particularly the first one that was posted.

Bruce O., thanks for posting the additional versions.

The 'Northumbrian Minstrelsy' ABC tune web site seems to be missing a number of the pipe tunes from Stokoe's book, including "The Keel Row" and "Buy Broom Buzzems".

The 'Northumbrian Minstrelsy' tune website seems to be lacking "Christmas Day in the Morning"

Four versions are available from the web-wide ABC index at the ABC homepage.

Sorry, that should be Vickers' manuscript. All tunes in 'Northumbrian Minstrelsy' are already on the web.

Also considered as originating in the Shetlands . . . For an outstanding performance of this I'd recommend Celtic Fiddle Festival's second CD.

As well as being a fine tune it's a very poignant one for us. The outstanding young performer and friend Nigel Chippendale collected a version of it (in Shetland, I believe). After his death (from lymphatic cancer) Pywackett recorded it, dedicating their recording to Nigel's memory; and we can't hear the tune without remembering him.

It seems to me that the folk world is populated by many fine people; even so, both personally and musically Nigel was a bright light amongst them; he's sadly missed.

And every "folk" musician should have a copy of his "Chippendale's Cherry Chunes", published posthumously, sometimes fiendishly difficult, and generally excellent (and partially written during his final period in hospital). Published by Hobgoblin music, for whom he used to work.

G.
