A ÓGÁNAIGH AN CHÚIL CHEANGAILTE

(traditional; musical arrangement by Gráinne Yeats)

A ógánaigh an chúil cheangailte
le raibh mé seal in éineacht,
chuaigh tú aréir an bealach seo
is ní tháinig tú dom fhéachaint.
Shíl mé nach ndéanfaí dochar duit
    dá dtiocfá agus mé d'iarraidh,
is gurb é do phóigín a thabharfadh sólás
dá mbeinn i lár an fhiabhrais.

Agus shíl mé, a stóirín,
go mba gealach agus grian tú,
agus shíl mé ina dhiaidh sin
go mba sneachta ar an sliabh tú,
agus shíl mé ina dhiaidh sin
go mba lóchrann ó Dhia tú,
nó go mba tú an réalt eolais
ag dul romham is 'mo dhiaidh tú.

Gheall tú síoda is saitin dom
    callaí agus bróga arda,
is gheall tú tar a éis sin
go leanfá tríd an snámh mé.
Ní mar sin atá mé
ach 'mo sgeach i mbéal bearna
gach nóin agus gach maidin
    ag féachaint tí mo mháthar.

I think Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin has recorded this song, and that there is a previous posting on Mudcat.

The recording by Gráinne Yeats uses a completely different melody.

Pádraigín sometimes sets lyrics to tunes
Here is the thread with A Óganaigh Óigas sung by Pádraigín Ní Ullacháin. The themes of these songs are similar.

I can't access the Gráinne Yeats youtube, I get a notice that the video isnt available. Has this to do with what countries we are in? Anyway, there is another youtube recording of A Óganaigh an chúil cheangailte Éilis Ní Shuilleabháin from Cork

Regrets, Felipa. Suppose your guess is correct, as here in the US I have no trouble accessing through the link.

In Dónal Súilleabhain's book Songs of there Irish there's another song called [A]' Óganaigh Óig , which appears to be to be closer to A Óganaigh an chúil cheangailte than to the song A Óganaigh Óig on the other thread (link posted here 14 July 2016)

If I get around to typing up the lyrics and translations, I will probably decide that song is different enough to warrant a thread of its own.
