I did some more Googling, and found that the Three Old Roosters were actually Jim Miller, Al Glaser [note spelling] and Johnny Adams.

(So, if my source is to be believed, that means the record label was misspelled.)

The "video" consists of a close-up of the record label. The spelling and punctuation of the title are not what you'd expect. It says:

Guest's verses sound like a relative or antecedent of "Roll Me Over in the Clover."

But the important thing is that I suddenly recognized the similarity of the "Roll Me Over" tune to that of the rather more staid "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" (J. M. Black, ca1894).

In fact, they couldn't be a whole lot closer.

I'm not sure what "nelly put your belly close to mine" has to do with hitting "nellie in the belly with a flounder," but it's kinda nice to see this thread again, started in the second month of the history of Mudcat. The thread was started in November, 1996; and it took until April, 2011 to get a really good answer.

"Who Slapped Annie in the Fanny with a Flounder" is the original tune recorded in 1940 by the Three Old Roosters. The flip side is, "She has the Biggest Kanakas in Hawaii." It was bowdlerized to "Nelly in the Belly" for the English and Australian market, where fanny is a much more intimate piece of anatomy. Lyrics below. I would love the chords to this.

Now when I was studying linguistics in college, one of my professors mentioned the song "Who Hit Anny On The Fanny With A Flounder" and how it'd been translated to French, but "Qui a frappé Annie sur la derrière avec la sole?" didn't have the same ring because the "Anny-fanny" rhyme was lost.

We used to sing a different version and tune when I was in Boy Scouts back in the '70s:

This is known as "The Flounder Song" or "Who Slapped Annie in the Fanny with the Flounder". It was probably a novelty song which partially entered oral tradition.   Larry Vincent recorded a version in 1949. Listen here:

Roughyed, from the recording, I'd guess Nelly's belly is "icky smelly" from that fish. I don't know if "too brisk" could be it in the next line, but I can't of a better alternative.
But is this the original song, or is it a New Jersey version? Isn't Wildwood Bay not far from Cape May?

OK, this is one that's still puzzling me. I was watching the movie Down to Earth last night, starring Rita Hayworth as (what else?) a goddess. In the 1946 movie Rita's character complains the one of the most popular songs with people in the United States is "Who Hit Nellie in the Belly with a Flounder."
Can anybody find this song for us? This is one of our oldest song requests, thread number 160, and it still has no answer.

I remember this line from at least fifty years ago, but I don't think there was really any more to it. It was a comic catch phrase, i.e. "And now for my next number -- Who etc.

It may have originated as a satiric comment on the prevalence of music hall/vaudeville performances of 'Who threw the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder" and the like.

Now, in 1949, I can remember learning"Who threw the whiskey in the well?" from a Louis Proma record -- I can remember learning it, but I can't remeber it.

In my rugby days we sang
"the cow kicked nelly in the belly in the barn (X3) The farmer said it would be alright."

Then sang
"second verse, same as the first, but a little bit louder and a little bit worse"
which we did. By about the 5th verse everyone was bellowing the words as loudly as possible and thus working up a fierce thirst, which we set about slaking.

Sounds like a Stan Borreson ditty to me. He did a lot of "Scandanavianized" versions of songs some twenty or thirty years ago out of Seattle (really Ballard) WA.

My grandfather used to sing a version of this, similar to the one in the database, but not quite. Again, to Turkey in the Straw:

"I kicked old Nelly in the belly in the barn (x3)... But the farmer said it would do 'er no harm."

I always assumed that Nelly was the cow in this rendition.

I'll bet there are as many versions out there as there are old folks to remember them!!
