Subject: Bubblyrat ill again From: bubblyrat Date: 07 Jun 16 - 08:28 AM Yes, too much booze once again ; poor Nicola had to get two doctors out to me on consecutive days, as I was incoherent, retching endlessly and had lost my balance completely. My blood pressure was two hundred and something over one hundred and something ; not good !! Luckily, the various medications (up to 9 a day) that they put me on have worked, and I am much improved.Needless to say, my life does not feature alcohol any more, as I would very much like to reach 70 ( next year ) !! Now I only drink Virgin Mary ; it's a Bloody Mary , but WITHOUT the vodka !!Wish me luck ! |

Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: Backwoodsman Date: 07 Jun 16 - 09:54 AM If I can do it, you can do it Bubbly! I haven't touched alcohol since my consultant warned me in January 2006 that it would kill my pancreas, and therefore me. There's no viable alternative, so you have to fight it, and I wish you every success. Im the same age as you, BTW. |

Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 08 Jun 16 - 04:16 AM I finally stopped drinking about two years ago. I'm not sure I'm what you would call a proper alcoholic. but two years ago I went to AA for a few months and said every week and said i was. Eventually I got bored with listening to the same stories every week. And a Glaswegian with an accent I couldn't understand bumbling on for an hour finally closed that chapter. But it worked. Buggered if I'm going back. And the only way to make sure I don't is not EVER pick up a drink. I keep booze in for my guests, but never touch it. You'd be amazed how long a few bottles last! Best of luck with it! very sorry you've been ill. |

Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: leeneia Date: 12 Jul 16 - 12:13 AM I wish you all the best, bubblyrat. My sister is an alcoholic who stopped drinking after seeing a therapist who taught her about the triggers in her schedule and her environment that tell her it's time to drink. No blame, no shame, no hitting bottom - just losing her brain and her courage. |

Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: bubblyrat Date: 12 Jul 16 - 04:24 PM Thanks everyone ! I am now recovering after not having had any alcohol for several weeks .Blood pressure is coming down nicely, and I can go into my "local" pub, the Oxenham Arms ,and happily make do with a Virgin Mary ( a Bloody Mary without any gin !). Now looking forward to getting up to Sidmouth followed by our own (South Zeal ) Dartmoor Folk Festival ; who needs a drink, anyway ? |

Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: punkfolkrocker Date: 13 Jul 16 - 11:24 AM Respect and best wishes... I'm in my late 50s, and over the last few years I've heard news of a few blokes similar age as me, who I used to know around the south west music scene, passing away alone in their bedsits after a squalid life of drink and drug over-indulgence... My dad was a heavy cider drinker, borderline alcoholic, who tried giving up in his 50s after Drs advice that he was on too many medications for blood pressure, etc. But he started up again in his 60s.. and didn't see 70. I used to be a heavy weekend party binge boozer, but absolutely tea total on weekdays. A balance I managed with strong self discipline throughout my 40s. Over the last 7 or 8 years I've voluntarily cut down to near complete abstinence, because I've been on all sorts of tablets since 50, and I don't want to end up like my dad and those other guys; ...also booze is too bloody expensive, and I got sick of myself acting like a boorish arsehole in public... plus my last remaining favourite local pub burned down. However, I can still allow myself to enjoy bank holiday mini binges of cider and wine with the wife, at home on the sofa in front of the TV... Maybe, if I'm lucky [or behave myself], a couple of bottles of decent malt at Xmas. |
Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: bubblyrat Date: 13 Jul 16 - 11:50 AM Yes, PFR : thanks for that . I know the feeling . Meanwhile, I am looking forward to a dry Sidmouth Festival ( booked the accomodation today in fact, very close to the Radway pub !}and a happy time without (sob !) any cider. |
Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: Tradsinger Date: 13 Jul 16 - 02:51 PM Hey Bubbly, I still intend to come down your way sometime for an evening of music as I greatly appreciate your guitar playing and your company. I look forward to taking you to the pub for an evening of orange squash and great music. Tradsinger |
Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: bubblyrat Date: 13 Jul 16 - 03:42 PM Good ! We are now going to Sidmouth for nearly a week before rushing back here for the Dart-i-moor festival, so we shall see you at either or both, no doubt ? Meanwhile,Nicola sends her love to you both, and looks forward to seeing you again. I miss your melodeon playing and accompanying you . At some time in the near future all our flood damage defects will be sorted, and a double bed may well be available for itinerant musicians ! Love and best wishes from Dartmoor. |
Subject: RE: Bubblyrat ill again From: Tradsinger Date: 13 Jul 16 - 03:59 PM Can't make either Sidmouth or Dartmoor, I'm afraid, as number one son is getting married then but I'll be in touch. Luv to all |
