Subject: RE: June Press Room (NH) Memorial Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Jun 16 - 03:14 PM I was just reminded that Alexander reminded me last year after the memorial singaround of what Jean Redpath said when she eulogized Robert J. Lurtzema back in 2000. She said, "Cry if you must, parting is hell. But life goes on, so sing as well." We sang! The crew was me (Linn); Ranger1; Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble); Dianne Lavoie; Bruce MacIntyre; Erin Hathway Weaver; Amanda from Brattleboro, VT; Justine Donovan; Mike Modern; David Middleton, Revolutionary War reenactor from Kennebunk & Kim; Don Hale; Peter Hale; Gail & Jim Finn; James, Rob, James & Owen from Newburyport; Jean Pauly; Chris Vaughan; Bob Eaton; Ellen & April who found us through the PMFF; Carol Coronis; W.B.; Dave Johnson; Gail Diderickson & Janice. After Tom turned away and just before another song could start, Barry blurted out "Juliana, Juliana..." Tom jerked his eyes back to Barry, who made a zipping motion over his lips. Tom broke up. I consider this session to be important to me and hopefully to others who had the pleasure of knowing (and hearing!) those who are to be remembered this Saturday. Subject: June Press Roo(NH) Memorial Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Jun 16 - 05:19 PM This coming Saturday, June 18th, is the Shanty, Forebitter and Foc's'l Ballad Session at The Press Room, Daniel St. in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Traditionally, it would have been both the regular monthly, and the annual Barry Finn Memorial session. But we lost founder Tom Hall (Curmudgeon) in November 2013 and Justine (Barry's widow) and I (Tom's widow) agreed it doesn't seem quite right to have separate memorial sessions. So this month's singaround will be a Memorial Singaround...for Barry Finn, Tom Hall, David Behm (another session regular who passed away in December 2006), and Jay Smith. Jay Smith was the founder of The Press Room and owner from 1976 to 1996. He passed away in September 2002 and Tom instituted the first Press Room Open Sing at the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival later that month in his honor. It was so successful that Tom started (though he called he his co-leader) our monthly shanty sing in January 2003, so I think Jay should be included as the inspiration for this session although he wasn't alive to participate. Barry Finn passed away in 2009 so Tom chose the June session for Barry's memorial in hopes that singers who had been in the area for the Mystic festival might still be in New England and could make the Press Room memorial session. David Behm was part of the Friday Press Room trad session since the early days of the 1980s and enthusiastically joined in the monthly sea music sings and the PMFF. He's probably best known for his version of Stan Rogers' "Barrett's Privateers" as well as "Capital Ship" which he learned from his mother as a child. I really hope we'll have a good turnout to honor those singers who were such an important part of the Press Room, both the Press Room sessions, and the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival. Please join us in keeping the songs they sang alive and in making the Press Room rafters roar! Linn |
