We were in Hull on Saturday (first time this year - granddaughters 21st) and had half an hour in the Minerva early evening. Soft drinks for the driver (me) but still enjoyed the ambience and that was without any music.

Noticed posters up for the Hull Folk Festival and Minerva's beer festival.

The Folk Festival bill looks interesting.

Presume there is a website somewhere.

Hi Malcolm.
Try 'Folk in Hull'. That might get you to it.

We are running another free concert of maritime songs in the Maritime Museum on Saturday if you are about. This is being billed as a warm-up to the festival

I did start a thread but it soon disappeared.

1 till 3
Spare Hands
Sam Martyn
Jim Eldon
Hull Shanty Crew
Geoff and Flick Lawes
The Smugglers
Ralph and Helene Marks

The Waterways Museum exhibition in Maritime Museum should be open by then as well.

There is a crowdfunding site for the Festival here if anyone would like to support it - even a small donation can help!    https://www.spacehive.com/hull-folk-and-mari#/backers

Here is the link as a Blue clicky
https://www.spacehive.com/hull-folk-and-mari#/backers

But when I went to pledge my pittance it seems i have to sign up to Facebook to do it, which I am not keen to do. What is the story to this?

Thanks Geoff - forgot the blue clicky routine as I haven't posted a link on here for a while!

You do have to sign up to the Spacehive website but I am pretty sure there is an option to sign up by just providing email and a password rather than via FB - I think that is what I did. There is an option to subscribe to the Spacehive newsletter so worth making sure this is unclicked unless you are particularly philanthropic!

Cheers
Joe G

I can't go myself - there's a big pond in the way. But I would like to encourage people who are closer to leave the pub, leave the telly, leave the puder and visit the festival.

Last year we were on vacation in Scotland, and we finished up at the festival in Portsoy. The music, the people, the conversation added so much to our trip.

How did we pick Portsoy? Portsoy was the only town that had a firm commitment for festival dates online 6-8 months ahead, when we were making our plans.

leeneia - that was a great thumbs up for the festival which starts this coming Friday here in Hull, England (but we are a long way from Portsoy in Scotland which , I am told, also has a great festival.)

Hull Folk and Maritime festival starts tonight and continues through Saturday and Sunday. Nearly all the events are free and
" The 3 days of the 2016 Hull Folk and Maritime Festival, sees more than 100 acts performing over 13 stages throughout the Hull Old Town and Marina area. "

On Saturday there are events to commemorate the start of the Spanish Civil war, with Na Mara doing a free gig tonight at the Minerva pub at 9.00 PM. The Wilsons are on at about the same time in Kardomah94 but that is one of the few events requiring payment.
There are plenty of singarounds and music sessions dotted through the weekend as well. There are even events which involve a river trip on the Humber Keel, Evangeline.
" " Floating Poetry Marathon ... Join some of the region's best writers aboard the Humber Keel Evangeline, for a top-notch, long-running literary lyrical extravaganza. Enjoy live readings and original music interludes in a variety of styles and in unique nautical surroundings. The vessel is moored near the Green Bricks pub and there are a limited number of open mic spots available to readers and musicians. Sign up at 12.45pm on the day. "

Definitely worth a look.

A good night it was at the Minerva last night with a very enjoyable set from Na Mara sandwiched in a singaround evening led by the ever fragrant Maggie ( she must work hard to keep those word-rich songs in her repertoire)
Jim Eldon kicks off today at 1.00pm on the ABP Maritime Stage with Mudcat's very own Ray Padget starting his singaround at the Sailmaker's pub at the same time (choices, choices!) A hell of a lot to see and hear before you finish of the evening with the singaround led by Les and Maggie at the Minerva. And it is all free. ( mostly)

Well first time I have visited Hull ~ got lost (don't ask) ~ saw places in Hissyfit songs at last ~ Minerva, St Andrews dock signs ~ and the Old Hull pubs and streets ~ ended up (late) in the Sailmakers Arms ~ big outdoor yard and yuppy pub ~ I think I was slightly over charged for pint of shandy at £3.70 or took me for the fool I am ~ £1.50 for half of lemonade! However, Kev was already there and a lad I know called Simon, Joe Grint was there and one or two other interested audience ~ quite surprised at the number of Hull singers and attendees. Thanks to Jon and Rose for support and help ~ got very busy around 4pm as I left for home ~ hope all had a good festival (continues today) thanks Mick McGarry and all organisers

Great concert on Friday. 4 Wilsons very much on song, Chris, Steve, Mike & Ken. At lovely little venue, Kardomah 94.

Free concert on main stage outside the Minerva all afternoon. Didn't see all acts but Chris & Denny Bartley with Emily Sanders gave us a great spot and Granny's Attic blew us away. Good variety of folk related acts in addition.

Sessions and singarounds well attended so far.

11 Historic vessels along the dock wall. Syntan was the stage for more concerts and Evangeline has a session on the deck today. We (Spare Hands) are finishing off the festival tonight at 7 on the ABP sponsored Syntan stage.

Big respect for the 2 main organisers Mark Pollard and Mick McGarry

An absolutely superb weekend - spent most of the time at the main stage which had great line ups. Absolutely loved Na Mara who I hadn't seen before - delighted to find that they are doing a featured support at the Topic in September.

Well done to all concerned!

Na Mara are back in Hull again in September at an event with Joe Solo on Sunday 25th September. Their gig will be at St Mary's Church in Lowgate, Hull and is in support of the Hull International Brigades Memorial Group which is working towards establishing a more publicly visible memorial to the Hull volunteers who went to Spain in the thirties to support The Spanish Republic against Franco and his army take-over . In fact there was a bucket collection for this at Na Mara's gig in the Minerva on Friday, which did very well , I believe. I'll try to put up more details about the gig on Mudcat nearer the date.

Three generations of my family had a great weekend.
My thanks to Mick, Mark and a whole army of behind the scenes volunteers.
It was interesting for me to meet many people who'd come over from the south bank on a first visit to Hull, and are planning to return next year.

Well done, you all!

That will be a great gig Geoff - when I was listening to Na Mara I was thinking how well they would work with Joe!

Hope the concert and the fundraising campaign is a success!
