I don't know what's wrong with Mudcat; what's wrong with Mudcat? I haven't gone after the auction, though, so I will check. Mudcat has behaved better than usual for me today, otherwise.

Been slow responding to instructions to post for me -- ie when I have clicked on 'submit' after composing a post, it has taken 5-10 minutes to take.

I've been having problems with it for some weeks now. About a third of the time, I can't get into the site at all, and if I do, it sometimes sticks or takes several minutes to send a post.

I've never known it like this, and I've been coming since the last millennium... Just the last few weeks. And it varies from day to day.

Often enough it's been that the Cat goes down, and you wait a day or so and it's back, but now it's different. The front page opens up, after some delay, but the threads just hang and hang and hang. I've left it half an hour or more doing something else and then given up. Or if a thread opens and you put in a post the same thing may happen. If you're lucky it's just waits of five or ten minutes.

It had better get fixed before long, or I'm afraid it will be curtains for the Mudcat. Which would be tragic.

Mudcat is a work in progress, and I think Max was working on some new equipment recently. He may still have some bugs to work out.

Subject: RE: What is wrong with mudcat?
From: Janie

Mudcat functions as it functions re loading, not loading, being down. That has been the case for quite some time, at least the last couple of years.

If I paid a subscription to belong, or if I was a regular financial contributor whose contributions added up to several hundred dollars a year, or if I occasionally sent significant money instead of occasionally sending a little money, I might complain, or might expect at least expect an accounting.

Based on nothing other than my own thoughts and observations over time re Mudcat and my acccumulative interpretations the few posts Max has made over a long period of time, I think it likely that Max is committed to providing a home for the DT, probably thinks the actual community of Mudcat, both above and below the line has run it's course, and has little interest anymore otherwise.

This website Max created was a pioneering adventure in social media. Seems to me the experiment is over.

I am recalling a thread I have not gone in search of, where one intrepid person, it may have been Bee, but I'm not certain of that at all, dared to make some sociological/anthropological observations about the social processes on Mudcat. We were offended and shut her down right quick.   Didn't like objective observations. If I ever can find that thread, and from there figure out who it was (we ran the person out on a rail), and how to contact that person, I'd like to offer an apology.

Communities that get broken up can again become communities. They will not, however, be the same communities as they were before. There will be influences, whether one is speaking of 3-d or virtual communities, from the past, but they will be different communities.

Kinda like roots music.

I'm not complaining, just reporting. And hoping things get sorted.

I'm incredibly grateful to Max. Best luck to him in his marriage, and all good wishes.

I'd not blame him in the least if he ever decided he couldn't shoulder the burden of this place any more.

From: Jeri

Let's try this again...
I've had some trouble getting threads to load.
Another thing is the repeat posting, which most of us have had happen. I submit a message, and it loads for quite a while and then I get that screen that's pretty much blank with an unusual address., Now, I've learned to refresh the thread to see if my message did, in fact, go through. Then, when I see it hasn't, I re-submit it. A minute or two later, I find that both messages posted. Oops.

So it's best to post, wait for a minute or so, refresh the thread and either post or don't.

Plus, I can't get any Mudcat pages on my phone, but Max knows that and is working on it.

It's all just very buggy right now.

Janie, I wasn't here when that thread happened, but I do believe that in my trawling through the forum, I have happened upon the thread, because I recognize that unfortunate conversation. Somebody was ahead of their time, God be good to them.

I have exactly the same problem as Jeri reports above.

Sometimes it takes up to 10 minutes for the threads to open and this is on a machine which is lightning quick and a 100 Mbit cable connection.

I wonder if it isn't that HUGE post in BS, it probably has to load the headers each time.

If I were the webmaster, I'd remove that thread and see if it quickens up.

Subject: RE: tech: What is wrong with mudcat?

That huge post in BS doesn't load on your machine. Only if you click on the name will it all try to load. Most people in the know click on the little "d" beside the post count for "descending" order and load ONLY 50 posts.

True, if you don't click on the thread, you don't load it. It wastes a load of space though. Mudcat is indexed as databases are. Every post from every thread ever is kept in its memory, unless Max re-indexes it, which would likely take a very long time and would mess up threads.

Subject: RE: tech: What is wrong with mudcat?

The sensible thing to do of course, with any post longer than a sentence or so, to. Write iit somewhere else, and then copy it tto the thread. I'm not sensible enough to do that, but it's annoying to work on a post, maybe with a few liinks in it, and then see your immortal words vanish, as it refuses to load.

It's always a good idea to check a post has loaded, after pushing the copy option first, in case it won't load. Then you can have another go, or copy it to some other app, and maybe post it later, when tge Cat is feeling better. Or more likely reading it next day and deciding yoou don't like it. Which is maybe what a lot of us should make a practice of doing generally. Second thoughts are more to be trusted (as a lot of Brexit voters regretfully thought the nnext day....)

I'm trying to get myself into the habit of copying text before I submit it. All I do is highlight the message text [CTRL-A] and copy [CTRL-C]. Then submit the message, and go back the the thread to make sure it "took." If it didn't, I refresh [F5] the thread to make sure I'm not working on a page stored on my computer. Then I paste [CTRL-V] the text into the message box and submit again.

I'm trying to get myself into the habit of copying text before I submit it
I do that and forgot where I put the files, perhaps I should have a folder for them. Compound that with using a BT (notso) Hotspot and you can understand why I posted here (allegedly) long ago and .........

But my comment then was "It is worth every penny that we pay" and "a lot more".

Cntrl "A", Cntrl "C"
and possibly:
> Notepad Cntrl "V", & save.
> busy elsewhere.
and when you can get back
> Notepad open, Cntrl "A", Cntrl "C"
then:
> Mudcat
Cntrl "V"

Yeah, it is a faf, but not that techie IMNSHO. But then the thread may have moved on too far by then!

Unless it's a very short message I write it first in a text editor. The one I am using right now is called 'gedit'. I assume it's a contraction of 'Gnu edit'. It's a Linux utility and if I remember correctly the Windows equivalent was Notepad.

It's easy to read and proofread, there is no predictive text and when I'm sure it's what I want to say I copy and paste it into the Mudcat reply window. Unless it's something out of the ordinary I don't save the text document. I just leave it open until I'm sure the message has been uploaded successfully. That can take some time but when it is definitely done I close the text window without saving.

Yeah, the problems with accessing and/or then hanging are very familiar, but totally unpredictable - some days it all loads absolutely fine, then for no apparent reason next time I switch on I just can't get the site at all. Or accessing a thread might take 5-10 minutes or even prove impossible. Or posting might do the same. Yea, verily...

Congratulations to Max and I take your point, Leadfingers, but it's still worth reporting the problems and bugs - cos if we didn't report them Max and his team may not get to know that/when anything was/is wrong!

You guys do a great job, and the last thing I'd do would be to complain - but yes it can all get so frustrating at times. For all of us.

Best regards to the team, and hope the bugs can get sorted out sooner rather than later. I'm sure you're doing all you can.

We're all used to it, but as I mentioned on an earlier thread, and Keith is likewise concerned..

It is not a good experience for new users and potential new members.

If a site looks dead or too flaky, folks generally don't bother trying again...

could it be a combination of success and funding level? And all that BS weighing it down!

I was told that in Pompeii there was a wall with a graffito (in latin presumably) that said somewhat to the effect: "methinks tis a wonder that this wall does not fall with the weight of drivel written hereupon "

This is an attempt to use the deviant text browser W3M (part of Emacs) to interact with the Mudcat. The site came up immediately, but as usual it took a minute or so to retrieve this page. Saving a posting in case of initial failure is very easy in Emacs. I will do so & then try to post.

If this is any use for mobile users..

I have been habitually using chrome browser on android devices.
Recently it's been too unreliable with video streaming on our Android TV media box.

So I tried Adblock Browser for Android, which sounded interesting, but didn't support required video files.

Then settled on Opera Browser for android, which also claims inbuilt ad blocking, and which performs very solid & reliably [.. so far]

I do not know what is wrong. It is very frustrating. I come here less and less. Being barred from   bS and then cut off from the rest, after many years of posting both above and below the line, just leaves me feeling why bother anymore. It is a great site but just too much frustration. I do hope it gets sorted, would be a great loss if it were to fold.... But...!

Mudcat works as good...and many times better than its golden past.

Kendal gave a tip a year ago about posting to the discussion. "If the upload message post hesitates or stops.... then pause yourself .... five seconds later. Roll down a few lines.and place a (.) (period) somewhere on the lower the line.

Press return again and "Bingo Big Boy" your message is displayed.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Without my homeboy Kendel revealing the screat handshake...I doubt I could have ever posted again.
