Subject: Mbo's Quote O' The Day--Dec 9th
From: Mbo

Here's a quote I really love. It is the spoken prologue from the "Eldorado Overture" from The Electric Light Orchestra's 1974 album "Eldorado":

The dreamer...

The unwoken fool...

In dreams, no pain will kiss the brow...

The love of ages fills the head...

The days that linger there

In prey of emptiness, of burned out dreams

The minutes calling through the years...

The universal dreamer rises up above his earthly burden

Journey to the dead of night

High on a hill

In Eldorado.

This quote always reminds me of my great grandfather. In the late 19th century, my great grandfather was a poor young Italian farmer, working on the family farm nestled in the hills outside Naples, Italy. For one reason or another, he was drafted into the Italian army, actually, the horse cavalry. While in the service, he was given access to things he had never had before, and the military educated him in good schools and paid for it all. When he was finally discharged after his time was up--he found that all his newfound learning would be wasted on the dirt poor farm. He was young, and intelligent, and wanted to live life to it's fullest. So, he decided to come to America. Some family members went, and some stayed, but my great-grandfather did emigrate, and ended up in Philadelphia, where he ran a very successful general store for many years. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have the pleasure of your company. Today I'd like to toast those dreamers, who forsook loved ones, life, and country and let no pain kiss their brow--as they took ship to another land with nothing but the hope of a better life, and though some found it not, I still honor their courage to leave it all behind in hopes of a bright tomorrow.

Mbo, you might want to check out Rick Fielding's new album, This One's the Dreamer" which we have been relentlessly plugging (because it is good for you, comrades!), with the title song -- by Norm Hacking -- having complementary sentiments. yours, Peter T.
