Subject: RE: The Last Chantey Sing on the Peking, Aug 7 - NY From: EBarnacle Date: 08 Aug 16 - 11:34 AM It went well. There were about 85 RSVPs--so many that we exceeded the legal capacity of Peking and had to move to the pier. We had participants from as far away as Norfolk, VA. One of the highlights of the event was that we were encouraged to share our memories of Peking, as well as our songs. Mystic was represented. There were two songs dedicated to Peking and her time at South Street. [I believe they were written for the occasion.] By the way, no beer but plenty of water and soda were available, courtesy of the museum. According to the museum director, there will be a $3m net infusion of cash to South Street in addition to the fact that Peking will no longer have to be kept operable. The exhibits and artifacts will stay at South Street. |
Subject: The Last Chantey Sing on the Peking, Aug 7 - NY From: EBarnacle Date: 05 Aug 16 - 03:07 AM Thanks, Joe. The "new" location for the past few years is at the Noble Gallery in Sailors Snug Harbor, Staten Island, 3rd Sunday of every month from 2 to 5 PM. There's usually plenty of parking and there's beer and companionship. |

Subject: The Last Chantey Sing on the Peking, Aug 7 - NY From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Aug 16 - 01:43 PM Hi, EBarnacle - I added a bit to the thread title so people will know what it's about. I take it that the sailing ship Peking has been sold, so does that mean that the entire collections of historic ships is being removed from South Street Seaport in New York? Will there be a new location for chantey sings in New York City? I'm glad I had the time to make a couple of visits to this wonderful maritime museum. -Joe- |
