I hope someone could help me? I have been trying to discover the guitar chords to the piece above as by Shirley Collins?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There is a link below to it:

Mainly Norfolk has quite a page on this song, including a transcription of the Shirley Collins. I figured that a posting of the lyrics might make it easier for somebody to post chords.
-Joe-

SHORT JACKET AND WHITE TROUSERS
(as sung by Shirley & Dolly Collins on The Harvest Years)

Short jacket and white trousers this fair maid she's put on,
And like a dashing sailor bold went roaring through the town.
She was signed up by Captain Blare Blair?, a sailor for to be,
And all to seek her own true love all on the raging sea.

One night as she lay drowsing, she was ready for her bed,
Our captain heaved a sigh and said, "I wish you was a maid.
Your cherry cheeks and ruby lips they have beguiled me,
And I've often wished with all me heart you could my sweetheart be."쳌

"But hold your tongue, dear captain, you know such talk's in vain,
For if our shipmates should come to hear they would make sport and game.
But when that we do go ashore some pretty girls we'll find
For to ramble along with us bold lads, see and seeing as you're that way inclined."쳌

It was some six weeks later they reached the London shore,
This maid appeared in her petticoats which made the captain roar.
"Oh, a sailor I have been aboard but a maid I'm going ashore,
And you've lost your chance, dear captain, so farewell for ever more."쳌

I made a couple suggested corrections. I've never heard "Blare" as a surname, so I changed it to "Blair."

I don't know the chords, but at abcnotation.com, you can search for "Short Jacket" and get a good approximation of the tune.

Trouble is, that tune seems very high while Shirley Collins seems to sing quite low. It doesn't sound like it, but she is.

Either way, you might need to change the music to a new key. Meanwhile, I hope some kind soul will come along with the chords.

I have this song in the Dave and Toni Arthur Songbook, it has 1 more verse than give above, plus the melody in standard notation in d minor but no chords, I would assume it's meant to be sung unaccompanied.

I've given it a quick listen and the chords go something like this ...
(not sure if they'll line up above the proper words after I submit)

       D      G       D Bm          D       A       G
Short jacket and white trousers this fair maid she's put on,
      D               Bm               G                  A
And like a dashing sailor boat? went roaring through the town.
      D               Bm                G          Bm
She was signed up by Captain Blood?, a sailor for to be,
    D      G    A   D   A    Bm      D       A D    Bm
And all to seek her own true love all on the raging sea.

I don't believe those chords will work with the tune Shirley Collins used. Get back to us if you hit a snag.

No, I don't believe that will help. The version Shirley Collins sings is a minor tune, like the version Dave Hanson mentions above.

Here's what I can do. The abcnotation.com site has a version of the tune you like, but it's high. (Good for flute, fiddle or whistle, tho.) I've downloaded the tune to my MIDI program and tried out some chords. Here they are, as done in the book 'Rise Up Singing.'

pu or PU = pick-up note. easy on the chords

/ indicates the beginning or end of a measure

- means repeat the previous chord.

one-beat pu note on "Short"

/Dm---/C---/Dm---/Am--pu/

/Dm---/C--PU/C-G-/C---/Am---/Am-C pu/

/Em---/Em---/Dm--PU/

/C Dm C PU/AM--Em/Am--

This version is in the C/Am family. If it's too high to sing, try transposing to the G/Em family. I hope you enjoy your new song.

Sorry Leenia but forgive my ignorance. Should your piece be capoed and if so upon which fret? ...Self taught guitarist speaking!

Thank you.

Leenia, Thank you ever so much for your help. Unfortunately try as I may I cannot figure the chords to the song? I find it easier when the chords are placed above or next to the words.
I'll shall continue to persevere though and again many thanks for your help and patience.
