Leenia, Thank you ever so much for your help. Unfortunately try as I may I cannot figure the chords to the song? I find it easier when the chords are placed above or next to the words.

No, I don't believe that will help. The version Shirley Collins sings is a minor tune, like the version Dave Hanson mentions above.

Here's what I can do. The abcnotation.com site has a version of the tune you like, but it's high. (Good for flute, fiddle or whistle, tho.) I've downloaded the tune to my MIDI program and tried out some chords. Here they are, as done in the book 'Rise Up Singing.'

pu or PU = pick-up note. easy on the chords

/ indicates the beginning or end of a measure

- means repeat the previous chord.

one-beat pu note on "Short"

/Dm---/C---/Dm---/Am--pu/

/Dm---/C--PU/C-G-/C---/Am---/Am-C pu/

/Em---/Em---/Dm--PU/

/C Dm C PU/AM--Em/Am--

This version is in the C/Am family. If it's too high to sing, try transposing to the G/Em family. I hope you enjoy your new song.

I have this song in the Dave and Toni Arthur Songbook, it has 1 more verse than give above, plus the melody in standard notation in d minor but no chords, I would assume it's meant to be sung unaccompanied.

I don't know the chords, but at abcnotation.com, you can search for "Short Jacket" and get a good approximation of the tune.

Trouble is, that tune seems very high while Shirley Collins seems to sing quite low. It doesn't sound like it, but she is.

Either way, you might need to change the music to a new key. Meanwhile, I hope some kind soul will come along with the chords.

Mainly Norfolk has quite a page on this song, including a transcription of the Shirley Collins. I figured that a posting of the lyrics might make it easier for somebody to post chords.
