I play for English Country Dance. I've yet to see a fiddler sit out even one 8-bar section in 2.5 hours of dancing. Even if they played beautifully, it would get tiresome.

Subject: Lyr Add: THERE'S NO FIDDLERS LIKE FOLK FIDDLERS
From: Tattie Bogle

I mentioned this song by my friend George Machray in a thread over a year ago, and said I would post the lyrics only after getting George's permission to do so: well I did, and then forgot to do it!
The thread under discussion then was "Don't play me your concertina", which got just a wee bit heated on the subject of parody and taking the mick out of various instruments, not just concertinas! Fiddlers tend to get off lightly in comparison with accordions, banjos and bodhrans in the "jokes about" stakes, so George, who is a guitar-playing singer-songwriter himself wrote this to the tune of "No business like show business". (And he does take a dig at singer-songwriters too in it!)
Have not yet seen anyone, even fiddle players, offended by it. George writes some great songs, both humorous and serious, and keeps us well entertained around the Scottish folk scene.

"There's No Fiddlers, Like Folk Fiddlers"
© Lyrics by George Machray (March 2013)

intro : To all my fiddling friends where e'er you be,
I sing this song especially for thee…

1.There's no fiddlers like folk fiddlers when they rosin their bow
Then they start their jigging and a-reeling
Playing everything by Guru Gow,
How quickly they become so unappealing,
You get the feeling, there'll be a row,
Cos there's no fiddlers like folk fiddlers,
They don't know when to whoa,
Yesterday you left them playing in the bar,
Get up this morning and there they are,
They can take a liberty too bloody far, believe me, I should know.

2.Cos there's no fiddlers like folk fiddlers,
They play three in a row,
So be prepared for sets of 30 minutes
Played by folk who think they're Aly Bain,
Just when you think that they have finished,
These violinists, start up again.
There's no fiddlers like folk fiddlers,
Here's something you should know,
They don't like guitarists who write boring songs,
Or balladeers who go on and on,
They just want to gi'e it laldy all night long,
Wi' tunes oot their f-holes.

3. No there's no fiddlers like folk fiddlers,
   They're either friend or foe,
Some of them can be such charming fellows,
Telling singers they can have a go,
But just when you start singing acapello
Some mini cello, plays Calum's Road
No, there's no fiddlers like folk fiddlers,
I wish they would just go,
I said to John McCusker, you should go far,
Try Timbuktu or Zanzibar,
He just smiled and then he shoved my guitar,
Somewhere it shouldn't go,
That's all folks - cheerio!
