Subject: Indexing: Edinburgh Uni Folksoc Books

I just bought two volumes of the Edinburgh University Folk Society's tune- and song-books, from 2006 and 2011. They are well produced: A5 format, spiral bound, with a tough plastic cover sheet front and back, clearly typeset and well printed on good paper. They give a good picture of what younger folk performers around Edinburgh are likely to know.

There is no contact address, and since the Edinburgh University Students Association has just evicted them from the premises they've been in for at least the last 40 years, I have no idea how to contact anybody to get another copy (mine came from a charity shop). I'll post in this thread if I find out.

The main point of posting that was to show what's played locally - for someone wanting to join in with the Edinburgh scene (at least, with the younger players). Most of the tunes and songs are findable on the web. The books are very convenient but not essential.

I'm more impressed with the tunes than with the songs ... I suppose the uni. library has a copy? and/or the National Library of Scotland.

Forgive an old biddy reminiscing, but I was at Edinburgh University in the Sixties and used to haunt the Folk Club. I remember being moved to tears by songs such as 'Will Ye Go Lassie Go'. I used to sob into my blue, white and green Uni scarf. Happy days!

I may be wrong, but I think Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers played at the Edinburgh Festival in the Sixties, and also made an appearance at the Folk Club. However, my memory ain't what it used to be and I could have imagined this! Only, I think I sang along with the chorus of Whiskey In The Jar...
