Subject: 100 years ago: Gorizia/Doberdo From: Jack Campin Date: 07 Aug 16 - 11:04 AM It's not often a battle is commemorated by a magnificent song from each side. The Battle of Gorizia between Italy and Hungary, August 1916: Italian: https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?lang=it&id=47 Hungarian: https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?lang=it&id=8706 Both have been recorded many times. |
Subject: RE: 100 years ago: Gorizia/Doberdo From: Jack Campin Date: 19 Sep 16 - 11:56 AM I missed an obvious point: the Slovenians were in the middle. The multiethnic but mostly Slovene city of Gorizia became the Aleppo of WW1, blasted out of existence. One Slovenian song on the battle became almost an anthem: http://www.hervardi.com/bitka_za_doberdob.php Google Translate does a good job on that. There is also an Italian page on it: https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?id=49622 I don't really get Slavic choral singing, but it's as short and to the point as war commemoration songs get. |
