Being given spelling lessons by jOhn is something that I have been adjusting to all day. I've come here because all the other threads are having problems with endless discussions about wheelie bins. If Doug finds out, he'll go mad. Sireen, this is no place for laughter! So stop it at once. By the way, did you spot me in the photo bit? I'd like an honest opinion.

Please invade any of the drivel threads and you will find it hard to leave. I promise. By the way, Doug, what the f****ng hell have you done to John? I know that it is cash-and-carry day for Mustafa tomorrow, but he is somehow changed. Posting here changes us all, but this is extraordinary. Salut! Subject: RE: BS: what does BS stand for?
From: Doug Chadwick
Date: 30 Jul 02 - 02:50 PM

No, we are not back to the old argument. My beef on this occasion is not against the existence of BS threads, or even in their contents, but the fact that several threads were running at the same time with more or less the same people extending the same in-joke. It was Shatner all over again. As I said above, even good jokes can wear thin.

My other point was that information gets hidden by the BS. I opened these threads because I am local enough to know the places you are talking about. I've had a pint or two in the Sloop; I've joined in the session at the Nag's Head; I've even managed to save up enough money to pay the fine on the Humber Bridge and visit Hull. Having given up on the "Durty nellies" threads, I had hoped to get something out of the "South Ferriby" thread - who was doing what, where etc.. not just Punch the Horse, but also others in the area, - but within two postings it was clear that this had started on a low point and was spiralling steadily downwards.

I have, in the past, complained about the relevance of BS threads but when I saw the scale of the reaction to my comments, I quickly hollered UNCLE and left those who enjoy BS threads to themselves. I rarely contribute to BS threads, either to join in or to complain. But sometimes enough is enough. I wouldn't dream of trying to "police" anything. Posting to a thread just to moan about its existence is a sure way to send the subject off at a tangent and extend the thread to a 5-parter. The subject of this thread is BS, so all my comments were directly relevant, even if my examples were taken from other threads.

Yes, we are in a café and should be able to enjoy ourselves and talk about what we like without asking permission of others but filling lots of threads with the same old joke is like having a table in the café where people are laughing so loud that those who want a quiet cup of coffee would prefer to go somewhere else.

By the way Oakley, I wouldn't describe myself as "one hell of an anything player" and no sort of melodian player, so you must be mixing me up with someone else.

Oakley, Ossonflags, Noreen & John ........ will you shake hands with me ?

...pretending to be relevant to music...
Doug, Punch the Horse are a very talented celtic folk band , if letting people know about there forthcoming gigs, is not relevant to music then please tell us what is!

...worthwhile information may be hidden amongst the dross..
As you have read the threads in question, you will no doubt be aware that the pertinent information, ie when & where they are playing is contained in the first message in each thread.
As one of the main perpetrators of the drivel, I sincerely hope you have not been frightened away, though as Noreen quite correctly states, there is stuff here much more "frightening" than a bit of lighthearted chat.
I would strongly urge you to go and see Punch the Horse, next time they are in your area, I am sure you would have a delightful evening, they are a friendly bunch.

John

...You are seduced into opening the thread...

So I seduced you as well, Doug Chadwick? Many apologies, the siren singing wasn't aimed in your direction...

Seriously though, if you don't like a thread, don't read it! You've obviously read all of the several threads that you cite, to justify your ire. They are indeed music related, but would only be relevant to local people anyway, which is clear from the titles. Musicians don't talk about music all the time, at least they don't in my experience :0)

And I'd far rather clog up the system, if that's what we're doing, with friendly, if inane, banter, than the numerous unpleasant political threads which are more likely to frighten away those with serious interests in music in my opinion.

Sorry Doug, I don't agree with you.

Noreen

Doug, perhaps Ossonflags is right. Perhaps you should police the drivel threads from within, and try to keep those perpetrators of insider jokes and those responsible for drivel, firmly in line, by showing your displeasure in a drivel thread.

Frivolous, inane threads that very occasionally stray into humour are easy to spot: they sometimes have the word "Hull" in them or an errant 9, in honour of a friend.

Doug, you seemed to have missed the irony in Banjo-Flower's attempt to justify his mistake in hitting the submit button twice. But of course he should be compelled to post only when he has something of serious musical worth to submit. I will sort him out, when we are having a good laugh on Sunday evening at the Wooton session.

Enjoying music on both sides of the Humber, appears, shamefully to be a more lighthearted experience than in other places. Which is a great pity.

We are back to the old old argument again are we?

I find it amazing that if you feel so strongly about this you dont post to any of the drivel pool sites. The reality of the situation is that the people who post to these sites are not irresponsible as you suggest, but talented deeply caring people, who are out there keeping music live and making sure the tradition is not lost. Some thing else we have not lost is our sense of humour.

This is also a chat line, you remember when people used to do that? You should lighten up a little, trust me,it really can be fun out there.

Then there is the type of bullshit that doesn't get the BS prefix because it starts out pretending to be relevant to music but then quickly descends into drivel. You are seduced into opening the thread and find yourself in the middle of insider jokes that are obviously hilarious to the participants but nonsense to those outside. Worse still, worthwhile information may be hidden among the dross, which means you either miss it or waste time searching for it.

Typical of this type of thread are:
punch the horse at durty nellies hull (UK)
Punch the Horse at Dirty Nellys (PART 2)
Punch The Horse at South Ferriby ( UK)

The PART 2 of the of the "Dirty Nellys" contained the gem "I'll get this thread up to 200 posts by hook or by crook "

These have now spawned the correctly labelled BS thread
jOhn from Hull, in Hull, on Hull 9Part3)

The "...Dirty Nellys PART 2" and " .....South Ferriby ......" threads are running alongside this BS thread but all are basically the same. Even good jokes can wear thin but clogging up the system with multiple threads containing the same inane comments gives Mudcat a bad name and is likely to frighten away those with serious interests in music.

The "Ways To Help Mudcat" thread had the advice:
......Start a music thread.........learn to post tunes........ and Answer music threads........

I would add: - don't corrupt music threads with BS

Maybe (s)he is trying to brag? While in English, as a Yiddish loan, "s(c)hmuck" has penile denotation and pejorative connotation, in Yiddish and German that is a derivative sense; the root meaning is "decoration, ornament", related to the verb in the German hymn title Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele, traditionally anglicized as "Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness".

Liland

PS: However, I suspect my conjecture goes beyond what the GUEST intended. It is a less than serious way to identify oneself.

That all depends. The most primitive bagpipes are basically hollowed out sheep, with a couple of pipes and suchlike stuck in at appropriate places. A bit whiffy I suspect.

I was right, it is brilliance sanctuary. Isn't a bodhran a prehistoric banjo?

You're quite right, Aine. The great thing about many instrument jokes is that you can alter them to fit any instrument.
Q: What did the guitar player get on his I.Q. test?
A: Drool.
Or...If you have a bagpiper, a bodhran player, and a guitarist in a room, and you have a gun with two bullets, whom do you shoot?
Shoot the guitar plaer twice.

Melodion come in for the jokes too don't they?

eg "You're driving down the road and you see a Morris Dancer on one side, and a fella with a melodion on the the other. Who do you run down?" "The melodion player - business before pleasure."

The odd thing is I've never heard any jokes about guitar players - and yet that's about the only instrument that I've ever heard of being actually barred from sessions.

Naah, I don't mind gargoyle when s/he signs in,because you can skip it. But I get pissed off when s/he comes in anonymously, because then it might be someone else you'd want to read who's pushed the wrong button or something. But then maybe some of the anonymous prats aren't gg after all - "Every crime in Oklahoma was delivered to his name."

Oooohhh -- I feel so much better now that my 'secret' is out. I play harmonica and pennywhistle too -- and they tell jokes about those too. I think all this teasing is just that, Bonnie, teasing. My husband played the trombone in high school and the jokes he can repeat turn my ears red! So, there ya go -- if it gets too bad you can hit 'em on the head with your banjo case!!

Rich, maybe you can tell me. Why is there so much 'banjo bashing?' People go out of their way, just to make a joke about the banjo. I never realized it was a great target for 'wise cracks'. It is such a 'happy' sounding instrument. Thank heavens most banjo owners possess a good nature to handle all the teasing.

Bonnie, the proper way to tune a banjo is with wire cutters. Slan agat, Rich

Dear Caitrin,

He/she who shall not be named only gets his/her way if one of us interacts with him/her. Like all bullies, if you ignore them, they will eventually go away. I think that most of us who have been here at the 'Cat for awhile have, frankly, gotten bored with these kinds of folks and their silly ways.

So, I will go and say another prayer for this person who needs a positive power in his/her life, and I suggest that we all do the same. It couldn't hurt, could it? I only know that it always makes me feel better to do so.

Steve, what is so funny about using an electric tuner to tune banjo strings. I use it all the time.

Ummm...before a) the really bad jokes start, or b) yet another round of squabbling starts over the comparative merits of BS...

Yes, it does basically stand for Bullshit. It's used around here as a palative for those on the 'cat who don't have the time, inclination or energy to read through the purely social threads (not that they remain "purely social" for any lenght of time). For more info, and an example of what this thread may turn into with enough ill will, check out the "OS versus BS" thread (search for "OS" in the title).

Hope this helps...

Dear Enemma

Follow your instincts ...they will seldom decieve you..

Since you appear...to not want to go where your instincts lead...perhaps you are a prude....or are currently dealing with "prudish issues" in your life...if so this is not a place to frequent. The MC is an adult place, dealing with adult musical topics, in a childish way.

BS means.... what BS means

Banjo Strings ARE unmentionables. They are tight, ready to snap, are uncomfortable to use, and have nasty stains of indeterminate origin.

Impressive juxtaposition of thoughts in previous thread, combining diahoeraa [?!], regurgitation and masturbation into a rather unappealing paragraph. I assumed that BS was Boz Skaggs -- Bo Svenson -- Bessie Smith -- Bart Simpson -- Brenda Starr -- Bobbi Soxx -- Bret Saberhagen -- Barbara Stanwyck -- Bartleby the Scrivner -- Bert Schweitzer (as he was known to those around him?) -- Barbra Streisand -- Beecher Stowe -- Bull, Sitting -- Black Sabbath, or the ever-popular Butternut Squash. the above also suggests "bad spelling"

Actually Emmie, a lot of the folks here have REAL diarhea and when they get together, its enough to knock a buzzard off a shitwagon. The verbal thing is more like regurgitation and mentally we are complete masturbators. This only leave room for total anal fixation which we reserve for blowing up a possum's ass.

We have a nice assortment of both genders here who engage in ribald humor and playin' the dozens. We have a female Catter with copius chest hair and another who floats on her back in swamp water while dragonflies buzz around her hooters. We have some guy who jello wrestles with an ape like woman while wearing a thong stuffed with a potato to enhance his meager equipment, and another whose entire act consists of wearing fishnet stockings and half of a gorilla suit, ascending a 90 foot tower, leaping out into the abyss, lighting a fart, and rocketing downward into a tiple filled with lime jello.

Many Catters spend rehab time at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed, a CIA front organization training patients to form crazed tiple bands to overthrow world governments.

Say...What WAS the question? Oh yeah! Actually BS stands for "Bi-polar Stoneputz" one of our most endearing members. Actually he IS a member, a REAL MEMBER....if you get my drift.

But we all do have a love of one of more aspects of folk music. We welcome you...Hang around...ask questions if you don't know and join in to the serious discussions and the BS anytime.

Spaw

What it really means depends on who is using it. Some attach it to virtually every thread they start if it does not directly relate to music, lyrics, etc. even though it may be a discussion of a songwriter, music software, festivals, whatever. Others use it only when it applies to something totally disconnected with music. Still others don't use it at all. Take your pick, Emmie, use it or don't use it as you see fit.

I seem to remember Doc Watson and probably Merle Travis saying BS meant "blue smoke," another euphamism for the meadow material. Merle wrote a hot guitar instrumental with the title "Blue Smoke" that, I believe, alludes to that very same stuff.
