Subject: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 20 Aug 16 - 12:49 PM We took a couple of grandchildren to see this film yesterday on its first day of general release (UK). Pleasantly surprised to find that the theme tune was an orchestral version of Tom Lewis's "Sailor's prayer". We got a couple of funny looks for singing along! Did not see his name mentioned in the credits though. Am I correct in thinking that the tune is his composition? I was always sure that it was. The film is quite watchable, it has had the story made more "exciting" by making Captain Flint a spy but not a bad job of compressing the book into a film. The railway scenes were even reasonable except that a 1950s paint scheme was on the loco when it was supposed to be 1935 (book set in 1929 originally). |

Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: GUEST,Senoufou Date: 20 Aug 16 - 01:08 PM www.tomlewis.net says 'Words and music by Tom Lewis'. I love this song! The Sheringham Shantymen have it in their repertoire, and I've hollered out the chorus (with appropriate actions) many a time standing on Lifeboat Plain. |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: GUEST,Senoufou Date: 20 Aug 16 - 01:12 PM I totally agree Lester. I hate it when literary works are bowdlerised like that. In 'The Magic Faraway Tree' Dick and Fanny have become Rick and Frannie. And Mrs Slap has been changed to Mrs Snap!! People must have very dirty minds to find something rude in a children's book. |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Senoufou Date: 20 Aug 16 - 01:29 PM Oh I've just seen - the Sheringham Shantymen are on Youtube singing it! (Many of them are retired seamen, fishermen and lifeboatmen) |

Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Mysha Date: 20 Aug 16 - 02:32 PM Hi, Actually, while I would have preferred a shot that explained why she was called "Titty", calling her "Tatty" is not so bad as changes go. Titty was called that after "Titty Mouse", and I expect "Tatty" would likewise have been named after "Tatty Mouse" from the same story. I have no idea why one would change the plot, though. What makes the story work is that it's almost completely about the children's own world. In the Faraway Tree books, quite a few people seem to have been renamed somewhat. Sailor's prayer's chorus is traditional; otherwise the song is Tom Lewis'. With my other cap on: Flags of the World has a page on the flags in these books, and their moving picture versions. Is there anyone who noticed flags in the new film and would write me a message about them for FotW? Bye Mysha |

Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: GUEST,CJB Date: 21 Aug 16 - 05:34 AM I thought the 1974 film of Swallows and Amazons was much better. On holiday with their mother in the Lake District in 1929 four children are allowed to sail over to the nearby island in their boat Swallow and set up camp for a few days. They soon realise this has been the territory of two other girls who sail the Amazon, and the scene is set for serious rivalry. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072233/plotsummary |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: bubblyrat Date: 21 Aug 16 - 04:04 PM I believe that her name was Letitia , hence "Titty" for short.Shame on the PC brigade (get a life, eh ?) for altering it . |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 21 Aug 16 - 06:18 PM I was told that her name was actually Mavis and she just chose the nickname herself after the mouse. There is an interview on StandardIssue with the producer talking about the debate they had on whether to change it. |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Stanron Date: 21 Aug 16 - 08:33 PM i don't know where the idea came from but I have long thought that 'Titty' was a contraction of the good old Shakespearean name 'Titania'. I read most of Ransome's Swallows and Amazons novels many years ago. Perhaps it came from there. |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Mysha Date: 21 Aug 16 - 08:40 PM Hi, Indeed, the real Titty's name was Mavis, as far as I know. Titty is a reference to Titty Mouse, but it's the first time I heard that she chose it herself. I wonder if the name change would have worked better with her being called Mavis in the film. I still would have preferred an explanation, though. All it would take is for her to have taken a TM&TM book along and a shot showing the front page with the title and "For I believe the 1974 film also explained her name, with her writing her full name on her new diary or something like that, as they had "Titania" (IIRC) as her real first name. Though naming her "Tatty" has a certain logic to it, now that I think about it I don't think I like it very much. It just doesn't have the right sound. In the BBC series, she was "Kitty". Caused quite a few complaints in 1963 apparently, but it sounds better. Of course, to an audience of people who actually read TM&TM, as children, the associations would probably be more about the characters in that book, which would give quite a different feel to the name change. So, I'll return to my position that explaining the name would probably work best. Bye, Mysha |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Aug 16 - 06:08 PM Surprising really they still allowed Roger to keep his name. |
Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: Rob Naylor Date: 23 Aug 16 - 04:47 PM Mavis was the name of the real Altounyan child who Titty was modelled on, NOT of the character "Titty" in the books. "Mavis" was also the name of the real boat that the "Amazon" was named after. Arthur Ransome and Ernest Altounyan bought the boats Mavis and Swallow in order to teach the (real)children to sail. The Altounyan children were: Taqui (thought to be the basis for Nancy Blackett) Susan Mavis Roger Brigit (who appears as "the ship's baby" "John" was added for balance as Roger was the only male Altounyan child. Christina Hardyment wrote probably THE definitive book linking real people and places with Ransome's stories. It's called "Arthur Ransome and Captain Flint's Trunk", written about 10-12 years ago and well worth a read for anyone with an interest. |

Subject: RE: Swallows and Amzons 2016 film From: GUEST,Senoufou Date: 24 Aug 16 - 03:39 AM We're edging into the realms of Captain Pugwash and the host of (totally untrue!) names of his crew. (Seaman Staines, Roger the cabin boy, Master Bates et al) For quite a while I used to believe these were true, until I watched the children's animated series on TV. Bowdlerisation in reverse! By the way, I loved the concertina hornpipe that was the signature of the programme, Anyone know its name? |
