Subject: Seeking book-taditional Murder Ballads From: MountainHi Date: 06 Sep 16 - 12:27 PM I'm looking for a good collection of Murder Ballads to encourage the interests of an up and coming traditional singer. What books, collections, and sources do you suggest? Thank you for your recommendations. |

Subject: RE: Seeking book-traditional Murder Ballads From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Sep 16 - 11:21 AM I would recommend the "American Murder Ballads" book, too. Also see the Website of Mudcatter Paul Slade: http://www.planetslade.com/murder.html |
Subject: RE: Seeking book-traditional Murder Ballads From: Jack Campin Date: 07 Sep 16 - 11:33 AM Unless it's changed lately, Paul's site required far more patience than I've got because each story was split across about ten pages you could only access sequentially. The design was inspired by the most unreadably archaic kinds of American print journalism, without even their excuse of maximizing eyeball contact with the ads. Great content though. |

Subject: RE: Seeking book-traditional Murder Ballads From: GUEST, Paul Slade Date: 08 Sep 16 - 11:52 AM Actually, Jack, things over at PlanetSlade HAVE changed. For the past two or three years now, all the Murder Ballads essays there have had the additional option of a "read as single page" link. Even in the old format, I was only asking you to click through to the next page every 1,200 words or so, which doesn't seem all that onerous to me. My Murder Ballads book, Unprepared To Die, is available from Soundcheck Books here.. Greil Marcus called it "a dauntingly complete and fascinating piece of work". |

Subject: RE: Seeking book-traditional Murder Ballads From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Sep 16 - 11:09 AM Not being one given to the hyperbole of book blurbs, I wouldn't use words like "dauntingly complete and fascinating," but I agree that Paul did a good job on his book. Buy it, you'll like it. |
